Save the capture or use its returned bytes
By default, page.screenshot() returns a Uint8Array. Add path to write the image to a file, or request base64 encoding when a string is more useful. The method reference and Puppeteer’s screenshots guide describe these options.

});Choose a quality value for your use case
The documented range tells you which values the API accepts, not how a given value will look or how many bytes it will produce. Puppeteer does not prescribe one best setting or publish a fixed mapping between the quality number, visual fidelity, and file size. Compare representative pages in the browser and runtime you deploy, then choose a value that meets your project’s image and storage requirements.
If the destination requires lossless PNG, use type: 'png' and omit quality; the quality option does not apply to PNG. For a JPEG, keep the output format unambiguous with type: 'jpeg' and a matching .jpg or .jpeg filename.

Version considerations
The Puppeteer API reference displayed version 25.12.0 when consulted. The changelog records a correction to quality-parameter validation in Puppeteer 22.13.0, released 2024-07-11. If your project uses an older release, check the documentation and behavior for that installed version rather than assuming the current reference applies unchanged: Puppeteer changelog.
Troubleshoot common issues
- The quality setting appears to have no effect: Confirm that the screenshot is JPEG. The option does not apply to PNG; set
type: 'jpeg'explicitly. - The file is not in the expected format: Provide
type: 'jpeg'and use a.jpgor.jpegpath. Without an explicit type, Puppeteer infers the format from the file extension. - The chosen number does not produce the expected file size: The API documents the accepted range, not a byte-size guarantee. Inspect representative output from your deployed browser/runtime and adjust the setting as needed.
- Older project versions reject or handle the setting differently: Check the installed Puppeteer version and its corresponding documentation; quality validation changed in version 22.13.0.
