For standard channels, qualifying uploads can be up to three minutes long; YouTube lists a maximum upload resolution of 1080p. You do not need special equipment—a phone is enough to get started.
Choose how to make your Short

YouTube documents both routes but does not say either one receives better reach or produces better quality. Choose based on whether you want to record in the app or prepare the clip first.

Make and publish a Short in the YouTube app
- Open the creation flow. Sign in to YouTube, tap Create, then choose Short.
- Set the recording duration if needed. Use the duration control shown in the recording screen to adjust it.
- Record your video. Hold the Capture button to record, or tap it to start and tap again to stop. Repeat to add another clip.
- Review the clips. If needed, remove the previous clip or restore it using the editor controls.
- Make optional edits. Add available music, filters, or effects in the app.
- Set the audience and publish details. Complete the title and other details, select whether the video is made for kids, and choose its visibility.
- Publish or save a draft. Choose the option shown in the app. A draft lets you return to the Short before publishing.
YouTube says you can record, edit, and upload from your phone without special equipment. A tripod or microphone may be useful for a particular setup, but neither is required by the documented creation workflow.

Upload a video you already made
From a computer with YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Create → Upload videos.
- Choose the video file. You can select multiple videos, but you must complete the details for each draft.
- Enter the title and other details, set the made-for-kids audience setting, and choose visibility.
- Review the details and publish, or use private or unlisted visibility while checking your upload.
From the YouTube mobile app
Use the app’s upload flow to select your prepared clip, add its details, set the audience and visibility, then publish or save it as a draft. YouTube’s Shorts creation guide covers recording and uploading in the mobile app: Get started creating YouTube Shorts.

Check the format and length
For standard YouTube channels, a video uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 is categorized as a Short when it is square or vertical and no longer than three minutes. The cited eligibility rule does not require one exact aspect ratio within those shapes. YouTube says uploads can be at a maximum resolution of 1080p.
Videos uploaded before October 15, 2024 remain long-form under this classification rule. Official Artist Channels have a separate effective date: qualifying square or vertical videos uploaded on or after December 8, 2025 are covered by the channel-specific rule. Check YouTube’s current guidance on three-minute Shorts if your channel type or a Content ID claim affects your upload.

Review these settings before publishing
- Title and details: Make the topic clear and accurate.
- Audience: Set whether the video is made for kids as appropriate.
- Visibility: Choose public, private, or unlisted. YouTube says the default privacy setting is private for creators aged 13–17 and public for creators aged 18 or older. You can use private or unlisted for a test upload.
- Video rights: Use only music and other copyright-protected material you have permission to use on YouTube. YouTube warns that a valid, complete takedown notice can remove a Short and may lead to a copyright strike.
For Shorts longer than one minute, an active Content ID claim can affect the video under YouTube’s claim rules. Those rules can change; consult the live three-minute Shorts guidance before relying on third-party material.

Understand views and monetization
Since March 31, 2025, YouTube’s public Shorts view count includes starts and replays without a minimum watch time. The earlier, more selective measure remains available in Analytics as Engaged views. YouTube says Engaged views is used for YouTube Partner Program eligibility and Shorts ad revenue sharing, so the public view total is not interchangeable with that metric. Views alone do not guarantee earnings. Eligible monetizing partners must accept the Shorts Monetization Module. YouTube describes a system that pools Shorts Feed ad revenue, calculates the Creator Pool using eligible engaged views and music usage, and allocates revenue according to creators’ shares of eligible engaged views in each country. The stated creator share is 45% of the amount allocated to the creator; it is not a per-view rate or an earnings forecast. Some views may be ineligible, including views associated with non-original uploads, fake views, or content that does not meet advertiser-friendly guidelines.
YouTube’s July 15, 2025 clarification renamed its repetitious-content policy as “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced material remains ineligible under the existing policy. A repeatable editing workflow or template does not by itself make content original or eligible for monetization. Review the YouTube channel monetization policies for current requirements.
