A browser locale influences language signals and formatting; it does not guarantee that a website will translate itself.
What you need to decide before capturing
Start by listing the language and regional variants the documentation must show, such as en-GB and de-DE. Then decide which environmental details should remain consistent and which should vary.

- Locale: Sets browser language behavior and affects the
Accept-Languagerequest header,navigator.language, and locale-sensitive number and date formatting. See Playwright browser context options. - Timezone: Set this separately if displayed dates or times should reflect a particular region.
- Geolocation and permissions: Set these separately if the page displays location-dependent content. A page that reads location may also need geolocation permission granted.
- Viewport and device scale: Choose the dimensions and pixel scale the documentation is intended to represent, then keep them consistent between language captures.
- Page state: Decide whether the screenshot needs an account, consent state, selected language, or other site-specific setup.
Playwright documents locale, timezone, geolocation, permissions, and viewport as browser-context settings; these are distinct inputs rather than one all-in-one regional simulation.
Use a separate browser context for each language
A browser context is an isolated browser session. Use a new one for each locale so cookies and other session state from one capture do not silently affect another. This makes the variants easier to reproduce and compare. See Playwright’s isolation documentation.

Capture localized screenshots with Playwright
The following Node.js example uses Playwright’s documented API. It creates a fresh context for each locale, applies the same viewport, visits the target URL, and writes a full-page PNG. Replace the example URL with the page you are documenting.

})();Install Playwright for the project and make its Chromium browser available before running the script. The capture call uses fullPage: true; omit that option for a viewport screenshot. To capture one component instead, use a locator screenshot, for example await page.locator('.checkout-summary').screenshot({ path: 'checkout-summary-de-DE.png' });. Playwright supports saving screenshots to a path, returning image bytes, full-page capture, and locator capture; consult its Screenshots documentation for the API options.
Set additional regional conditions when required
Add context options only when the page or documentation needs them. For example:

});Choose a timezone and coordinates appropriate to the scenario rather than assuming a language code supplies them. For authenticated pages, initialize the context with prepared storage state if needed; Playwright documents storage state as a way to create a context with logged-in information at BrowserContext storageState. Check that the resulting account view contains no information unsuitable for publication.
Verify the rendered language before saving
Setting locale configures the browser environment. It does not prove that the target application translated its interface or selected the intended regional version. A site may instead rely on a locale-specific URL, an in-page language menu, an account preference, or a cookie.
- Navigate using the appropriate URL and any documented site-specific language-selection steps.
- Inspect visible labels and content, not just
navigator.languageor the response headers. - Check regional details that matter, such as date, time, number, currency, address, or location-specific content.
- If the page offers a language switcher or stores a preference, apply that state explicitly in each fresh context and record how it was set.
- Capture only after confirming the page has reached the expected state. If content loads asynchronously, wait for a meaningful selector or application-ready condition rather than relying on an arbitrary short delay.
Choose the right capture framing and comparison settings

Playwright describes a full-page capture as a screenshot of the full scrollable page, as if it were displayed on a very tall screen. Use viewport or element framing when the full page is not relevant; long captures can be unwieldy in documentation.

- Viewport dimensions and device scale factor.
- Capture mode, browser engine, output format, and page state.
- Wait conditions and any interaction steps taken before capture.
Playwright’s screenshot API accepts options for framing and output. Its CLI documentation lists PNG, JPEG, and WebP output and CSS-pixel versus device-pixel scale choices: Playwright CLI reference. With device scale, the capture uses device pixels rather than CSS pixels; choose the scale deliberately and keep it consistent for comparisons.
Name and document each screenshot
Use filenames that identify the page, locale, and form factor, for example checkout-de-DE-desktop.png and checkout-en-GB-desktop.png. Alongside the files, record the URL, locale, viewport, browser, capture date, and any account, consent, or language-selection state needed to recreate them. This is a repeatability practice, not a Playwright filename requirement.

Troubleshooting localized captures
The screenshot is still in the original language
The browser locale may not control the site’s language choice. Check for a locale-specific route, language selector, account preference, or stored cookie. Apply the site’s required selection in the context and verify visible text before capture.
Dates or location-sensitive content do not match the target region
Locale, timezone, and geolocation are separate context settings. Set the timezone and coordinates explicitly if relevant, and grant geolocation permission if the page needs to access the emulated location.

Ensure each variant uses its own new browser context and that the context is closed after capture. Do not reuse a context when the goal is independent sessions.

The screenshot is incomplete or captured too early
Wait for a stable, meaningful page condition before taking the screenshot. A page’s network may never become fully idle, or it may finish network activity before client-rendered content is ready; if so, use a selector or application-specific ready signal. Recheck that lazy or below-the-fold content is present when using full-page capture.
The output is hard to compare or too large to use
Keep viewport and scale consistent. If the whole page is excessively tall, capture the relevant viewport or component instead. Use one output format across the set; Playwright’s CLI supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP.
