To start a podcast on YouTube, create a public playlist for your show and add its full episode videos. An MP3 alone is not a YouTube podcast episode. YouTube’s podcast features can give eligible shows additional discovery surfaces, but they do not guarantee more viewers. Use YouTube Studio’s podcast analytics and each episode’s Reach report to see how people find and watch your show, then refine your titles, descriptions, packaging and promotion based on those patterns.
What counts as a podcast on YouTube?
YouTube represents a podcast as a playlist and its episodes as videos in that playlist. A video can be audio-first, but the episode itself must be a video; you cannot turn an MP3 file by itself into a YouTube podcast episode. See YouTube Help’s podcast setup guidance.

Keep one podcast playlist for each show. Put its full episodes across seasons in that playlist, in the order listeners should consume them. Give the playlist the actual show name and a detailed description. Keep clips, unrelated uploads and videos from other channels in separate playlists.
Choose the right setup route

YouTube may ask you to verify your account during setup. Its help pages describe both routes; exact interface details can change, so follow the current prompts in Studio.

Create the podcast playlist in YouTube Studio
- Open the podcast creation flow. In YouTube Studio, choose Create > New podcast. If your show already has a suitable playlist, open the option to set an existing playlist as a podcast instead.
- Enter the show details. Use the show’s real name as the title, write a detailed description of the show, choose visibility, and add a square thumbnail. YouTube recommends a public podcast for each show. Avoid generic titles such as “Full Episodes” or “New Uploads” in place of the show name.
- Add the episodes. Upload new episode videos or add existing videos to the podcast playlist. Include full episodes for the show, not clips, other shows, or other channels’ videos.
- Set the listening order. For an episodic show, YouTube’s creation guidance generally recommends newest first. For a serial show intended to be followed from the beginning, put the oldest episode first. Keep all seasons in the same show playlist.
- Check the result. Confirm that the playlist is public, its title and description identify the show, the thumbnail is square, and the videos appear in the intended order.

Distribute an audio-first show: Studio upload or RSS
If your podcast already has an RSS feed, YouTube documents RSS connection as another distribution route; creators can also create and manage a podcast through Studio. The best fit depends on how the show is produced and distributed already.

- Use Studio if you want to upload or manage episode videos directly in YouTube.
- Consider RSS if your audio-first show already has a feed and you want to connect that distribution route. Check YouTube’s current instructions for feed setup and account eligibility.
- Check your podcast host. Some hosting platforms may offer YouTube distribution, but this is not established for every host. Confirm the option with your provider before relying on it.

A playlist marked as a podcast may still not qualify for some features. For example, YouTube notes that content the creator does not own may make a playlist ineligible. Shorts created to support a podcast do not appear in YouTube Music. Keep the main podcast playlist focused on full episodes, and use separate playlists for promotional clips.
Measure reach and improve the show
Use analytics to find evidence of what is and is not reaching viewers. Podcast analytics in YouTube Studio can include views, watch time, traffic sources, audience demographics, retention and revenue data. For an individual episode, the video Reach report explains how viewers found it, including external sites and apps and videos that suggested it; it also surfaces measures such as click-through rate, views and watch time.

- Review the podcast analytics. Look at views, watch time, audience, retention and traffic sources to understand performance across the show.
- Open an episode’s Reach report. Inspect how viewers found that video, including suggestions and external sources, alongside click-through rate, views and watch time.
- Compare patterns over time. Look for recurring sources and differences in retention among episodes rather than drawing a conclusion from one isolated result.
- Make a focused change. Use what you observe to decide whether to refine episode packaging, the show description or promotion. Review subsequent results; no single setting guarantees more views.
