Give an AI remediation agent narrow, revocable permissions—not administrator access. Define which targets and actions it may touch, require human approval above an explicit risk threshold, and make every automated change small, verifiable, and reversible where possible. If the agent is uncertain, loses required human contact, or detects a network convergence event, it should stop changing the network and alert an operator.
Start with a bounded operating scope
Before connecting an AI agent to network devices or controllers, define what it owns, what it may do, and who is accountable for its operation. Treat it as a constrained operator rather than a general-purpose administrator.

- Assign a named human owner and an operator who can pause or revoke the agent.
- Document the agent’s purpose, device and controller scope, permitted actions, and escalation path.
- Inventory the agent and its connected tools, credentials, and policy enforcement points.
NIST NCCoE’s DevSecOps reference-model guidance recommends least privilege, constrained guardrails, monitoring, and human involvement for higher-risk decisions. Cisco’s agentic-AI guidance also recommends tying agent identities to human owners and governing identity, access, and behavior; that is vendor guidance, not a neutral standard.

Use explicit allow and block lists
Configure an allow list of the devices, resources, and action types the agent can use. Add a separate block list for prohibited targets or operations, and make a block-list match override an allow-list match. Give the agent only the credentials needed for that scope. Avoid relying solely on interface-name patterns: explicitly protect management interfaces, loopbacks, access controls, authentication settings, routing policy, and other resources whose modification could cut off management access.

Make each change narrow
Require one explicitly named target per change. Reject wildcards and bulk operations, and validate every parameter against an operator-defined safe range before execution. A change to one device or interface is easier to verify and contain than a command that can affect an entire fleet.
The September 27, 2026 IETF Internet-Draft on AI-mediated network-device management gives an example preference order from alert-only, to clearing counters or statistics, to a soft reset, a hard reset, an interface-state change, and finally a routing-metric adjustment. This is an illustrative ordering in a work-in-progress proposal, not a universal safety ranking: actual impact depends on topology, protocols, and service design.
Set the human-approval threshold by risk
Classify actions by both potential impact and reversibility. Then set an explicit maximum risk level that the agent may execute without approval. The IETF draft proposes a medium default autonomy ceiling; this is an example design value, not a validated threshold for every production network.

| Example risk tier | Actions in the IETF draft | Suggested control |
|---|---|---|
| Low | Non-destructive counter clear or route refresh | May run autonomously only if the action is in scope, parameters pass policy checks, and verification is available. |
| Medium | Recoverable session clear or interface toggle | May run without approval only when the operator’s configured autonomy ceiling includes medium risk. |
| High | Routing-metric change or peer-configuration modification | Queue for human review with the proposed change and its rationale when above the configured ceiling. |
Risk tiers should reflect your environment, not just the action name. An interface toggle can have very different consequences depending on redundancy and service dependencies. Irreversible or difficult-to-recover actions warrant stricter controls than changes with a tested rollback path.
Keep remediation steps independently verifiable
Prefer a single change followed by a check over a chain of changes whose later steps depend on earlier results. The draft cautions against letting an agent autonomously execute workflows such as draining traffic, changing an interface, and restoring traffic, because it may not predict interactions or handle partial failure reliably. Have an operator plan and approve such a workflow, or implement it as a separately tested deterministic runbook with checkpoints and explicit failure handling.
- Capture the pre-change state. Save the relevant device configuration and operational state before applying the change.
- Apply one approved change. Check the target, action, and parameters against policy immediately before execution.
- Verify the result. Use device and service-level signals appropriate to the remediation, not merely a successful command response.
- Roll back on defined regression. Decide in advance which metrics, observation window, and severity constitute a regression, and ensure the rollback procedure is credible.
- Escalate when recovery is uncertain. If the state cannot be verified or rollback fails, stop further automated changes and alert the operator.
The IETF draft proposes rollback when post-action verification detects regression at warning severity or higher. That threshold is a draft proposal; operators need to define locally meaningful signals and severity criteria before enabling autonomous changes.

- Trade an earlier-generation WatchGuard appliance and move up to a new WatchGuard solution. The program includes options to trade up to a physical or virtual appliance. The owner must retire an earlier generation WatchGuard appliance to activate Trade Up products. By retiring a WatchGuard product, it no longer appears amongst your managed products; it is incapable of upgrades, add-on activation, or software downloads, and ownership cannot be transferred.

Limit the rate of change and pause during convergence
Rate limits reduce the chance that a false diagnosis or repeated retry turns into a wider incident. The IETF draft proposes these defaults, which are operational suggestions rather than measured outcomes:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

| Limit | Draft’s proposed default | Draft’s proposed maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Remediation actions across all targets | 5 per hour | 20 |
| Actions per target | 3 per 24 hours | 5 |
| Retries for one anomaly before escalation | 3 | 5 |
| Minimum interval before raising the same anomaly again | 300 seconds | Not stated in the draft |
Tune limits to local operational needs, and specify whether they apply per agent, per target, or across a fleet. Stop after the configured retry limit and escalate rather than looping indefinitely. When the network is undergoing a detected convergence event, the draft recommends monitoring and alerting without remediation so the agent does not interfere with network self-healing.
Define what the agent does when control is lost
Specify fail-safe behavior for stale or conflicting telemetry, uncertainty about a target, invalid parameters, unavailable policy checks, and inability to reach a required human operator. A safe default is to reject the change, record the reason, and switch to monitor-only or alert-only operation until a person restores the conditions for action. The draft specifically proposes monitor-only mode when no configured human operator can be reached, and rejection and logging of out-of-range parameters.

NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF 1.0, released January 26, 2023) is voluntary guidance for managing AI risk; NIST says the framework is being revised and notes a 2026 concept note for a critical-infrastructure profile. It can inform risk assessment, but it is not a network-device-specific remediation standard. NIST SP 800-215, published November 17, 2022, provides broader guidance for securing modern enterprise networks.

Test in stages before granting write access
Begin with recommendation-only or alert-only operation. Replay representative incidents and exercise cases involving false positives, stale telemetry, policy rejection, failed verification, unavailable operators, and rollback. Review both missed hazards and unnecessary alerts before expanding the agent’s permissions.
NIST NCCoE’s DevSecOps guidance calls for ongoing monitoring and evaluation of audit data, and its materials recommend least privilege and human involvement where decisions carry higher risk or impact. NIST’s AI Resource Center provides testing, evaluation, verification, and validation resources. The cited sources do not establish a single validated test plan or a quantified success benchmark for autonomous network remediation, so teams should define acceptance criteria for their own services and operations.
Evaluate a guardrail design or vendor capability
When comparing approaches, ask for evidence in each of these areas rather than relying on a general claim that an agent is safe:
