Set Fortnite parental controls from the child’s Epic Account Portal or from Fortnite’s Parental Controls menu. Create a six-digit PIN, then use it to control chat, friend requests, content ratings, spending, AI communication and Fortnite/UEFN play time. If the account is Cabined, a parent must complete Epic’s consent and account setup before chat and real-money purchases can work. Console and mobile family settings still apply separately.
What Fortnite parental controls cover
Epic’s controls are attached to an Epic Games account, so they follow that account across Fortnite and other Epic services. The same core controls are available in two places: the Epic Account Portal and Fortnite itself. The portal is useful when you are configuring several settings from a phone or computer; the in-game menu is convenient when Fortnite is already open.

These controls can govern six practical areas:
- Social features: voice chat, text chat, friend requests and mature-language filtering.
- Content: the highest Fortnite experience rating the child may access and age-rated content in the Epic Games Store.
- Spending: Fortnite purchases and paid random items.
- Time: daily limits, allowed play windows and separate Play and Create limits for Fortnite and Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN).
- AI communication: whether voice and written communication with AI features is allowed.
- Account permissions: settings affected by Epic’s Cabined Account system and parental consent.
They do not replace the family controls built into a PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, phone or tablet. Those platform controls can restrict the entire device, including non-Epic games and applications.

Use the parent’s access to the child’s Epic account
Sign in to the child’s Epic Games account at the Epic Account Portal. The parental-control PIN protects changes, so use a PIN the child cannot guess and do not reuse a device passcode that the child knows.

Check the account identity on consoles
A console profile name is not always the same as the Epic account name. If the child mainly plays on a console, compare the Account ID shown in the Epic Account Portal with the Account ID displayed in Fortnite before changing restrictions. Applying settings to the wrong Epic account can make it appear that controls are not working.
Understand the PIN’s permanent status
Epic states: “The Parental Controls PIN on an Epic Games account cannot be removed once it has been set.” You can turn individual restrictions off or change them after entering the PIN, but the PIN itself remains associated with the account. Store it in a password manager or another secure place.
Check whether the account is Cabined
Epic may create a Cabined Account when a player is under 13 or under the applicable age of digital consent in the player’s region. Until a parent or guardian completes the required consent and account setup, Epic can disable voice chat, free text chat, real-money purchases, non-Epic game downloads, recommendations, marketing notifications, some account linking, custom display names and SMS-based two-factor authentication. The child can still play Epic games such as Fortnite with content already earned or purchased.

- Sign in: open the Epic Account Portal and sign in to the child’s Epic Games account.
- Open Parental Controls: select the Parental Controls tab. The controls cover the Epic Games Store, Epic Games Launcher and Fortnite.
- Create the PIN: follow the prompts to create and confirm a six-digit parental-control PIN. You will need this PIN whenever a protected setting is changed.
- Set social permissions: choose the allowed audience for voice chat, text chat and friend requests. The available choices include Everybody, Friends & Teammates, Friends Only and Nobody/Off, although age rules can remove higher-audience choices.
- Set content ratings: choose the maximum Fortnite experience rating the child may access. A PIN is required to open an experience rated above that limit. Epic Games Store age-rating restrictions use the PIN in the same way for mature content.
- Set purchase controls: restrict Fortnite purchases and paid random items according to the options shown for the account.
- Set time controls: configure Fortnite/UEFN Time Limit Controls, including a total daily allowance, permitted time windows, separate Play and Create limits, and whether the child may request additional time.
- Review AI communication: under the account’s general settings, locate Allow voice and written communication with AI Features and turn it on only if you want this communication enabled. Enter the PIN when prompted.
Save each change if the portal presents a separate Save or Confirm button. Sign out of the parent session when finished, especially on a shared computer.

Set or check controls from Fortnite
- Launch Fortnite using the child’s Epic account.
- Open the sidebar or hamburger menu.
- Select Parental Controls.
- Enter the six-digit PIN.
- Change the social, rating, spending, time or AI options you need, then confirm the changes.
The Fortnite menu and the Epic Account Portal expose the same core account-level settings. If a change made in one location does not appear immediately in the other, close and restart Fortnite, verify that the same Epic Account ID is signed in, and check the account’s connection on the console or mobile device.
Choose chat and friend permissions correctly
Epic’s social controls use audience levels, but a child’s age can cap the highest available setting. The cap is a product rule, not a setting that a parent can override by choosing a broader audience.

Use Nobody/Off when the child should have no voice or text communication. Use Friends Only for a narrower circle, or Friends & Teammates when team coordination is important. Review friend-request permissions separately: limiting chat does not automatically produce the same friend-request rule.
Epic also provides a mature-language control. Treat it as a separate setting from the audience choice; a child can be restricted to a particular chat audience while mature language remains filtered.

Restrict Fortnite experiences and store content
Fortnite experience ratings
Every Fortnite experience has a rating. Set the maximum rating allowed in Parental Controls. If the child selects an experience above that limit, Fortnite requires the parental-control PIN before it can be opened. This lets a parent permit Fortnite generally while blocking experiences that exceed the chosen age level.
Epic Games Store ratings
The Epic Games Store has its own age-rating restrictions. A mature game or other restricted content requires the PIN when the account attempts to access it. This is account-level protection for the store and launcher; it is not a substitute for the age controls on the device where the launcher runs.
Control purchases and paid random items
Use the spending section of Epic’s Parental Controls to restrict purchases in Fortnite, including paid random items. This is the appropriate place to prevent the child from buying content with real money through the Epic account. If the account is Cabined, real-money purchases remain unavailable until the parent completes the required consent and account setup.

For stronger protection, combine Epic’s purchase restriction with the platform’s requirement for a parent password or approval for every store transaction. The Epic setting follows the account; a console or mobile purchase setting can cover other games and applications using the same device.

Set Fortnite and UEFN time limits
Fortnite/UEFN Time Limit Controls are more flexible than a single daily timer. Configure the options that match the family’s routine:
- Total daily time: the maximum amount of time permitted in a day.
- Allowed windows: the hours during which play is permitted, such as after homework or only on weekends.
- Separate Play and Create limits: different allowances for playing Fortnite experiences and creating in UEFN.
- Extra-time requests: decide whether the child can ask for more time through the account controls.
A daily allowance and an allowed window work together. For example, a child may have two hours available per day but be unable to use that allowance outside the permitted evening window. If Create is given its own limit, time spent building in UEFN can be managed independently from time spent playing experiences.
Time controls cover Fortnite and UEFN activity associated with the Epic account. They do not automatically stop other games, video apps or web browsing on the device; use the console, phone or tablet family settings for that broader restriction.
Allow or block AI communication
Fortnite and Epic Account Settings include Allow voice and written communication with AI Features. To change it, open Parental Controls or the account’s general settings, enter the parental-control PIN, find the AI communication setting under General, and turn it on or off. A Cabined Account must complete account setup first; the setting cannot restore features that Epic has disabled while consent is incomplete.
This control concerns communication with AI features. It is separate from ordinary player voice chat and text-chat audience settings, so configure both if you want to manage human and AI communication.
Complete the Cabined Account consent process
If Epic identifies the player as below the regional age of digital consent, follow the parent or guardian consent prompts associated with the account. Complete the requested verification and account setup rather than trying to bypass the Cabined Account state. After setup, the features that depend on consent can become available subject to the parental settings and the child’s age limits.
Consent does not remove the need for the parental-control PIN. It changes what the account is eligible to use; the PIN still protects the choices the parent makes. Age-based chat caps continue to apply after setup.
Use console and mobile family controls as a second layer
Epic recommends reviewing the family settings on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and mobile devices after configuring the Epic account. The two layers have different scopes:

Set the stricter rule when the two layers overlap. For example, allowing Fortnite voice chat at the Epic level will not make it available if the console family account blocks communication, and a device-wide bedtime can end Fortnite even when Epic’s daily allowance has not been used.
Troubleshoot common problems
My child cannot use voice or text chat
- Check whether the account is Cabined. Chat can remain disabled until parental consent and account setup are complete.
- Open Parental Controls and verify that voice and text chat are not set to Nobody/Off.
- Check the child’s age. Under 10, the maximum is Friends Only; under 13, the maximum is Friends & Teammates.
- Review the console or mobile family settings, which may block communication independently of Epic.
- Confirm that Fortnite is signed in to the Epic Account ID whose settings you changed.
The PIN does not work or settings appear unchanged
- Enter the six-digit PIN created for that Epic account, not a console passcode.
- Verify the Account ID in the portal against the in-game Account ID.
- Make the change again from the Fortnite Parental Controls menu or the Epic Account Portal, then restart Fortnite.
- If the PIN is forgotten, use Epic’s account-support recovery process; creating a new child account will not alter the existing account’s PIN or history.
A restricted experience or store item still opens
- Check that the maximum rating was saved in the correct Epic account.
- Remember that the PIN authorizes content above the rating; anyone who knows the PIN can unlock it.
- Apply the platform’s store and age-rating controls as well if the content is being launched through a console or mobile store.
Time limits are not stopping all device use
Epic’s time controls apply to Fortnite and UEFN, not every application on the device. Add a device-wide schedule or app limit through the console, phone or tablet family settings when the goal is to stop all gaming or screen use.
