For a continuous FFmpeg feed, use the loudnorm filter in single-pass mode and choose its integrated loudness, loudness range and true-peak limits for your music. FFmpeg’s defaults are not YouTube requirements, and YouTube’s live encoder guidance does not specify a LUFS target. For stereo RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; test the actual playlist before launch and monitor stream health while it runs.
Set a deliberate target with FFmpeg’s loudnorm
loudnorm is FFmpeg’s EBU R128 loudness-normalization filter. For a live feed, its minimal form is:

loudnorm=I=<target-I-LUFS>:LRA=<target-LRA-LU>:TP=<target-TP-dBTP>
Replace each placeholder with a value you have chosen for the program; this is filter syntax, not a preset. The filter’s documented defaults are −24 LUFS integrated loudness, 7 LU LRA and −2 dBTP true peak. Those are defaults only—not YouTube specifications or universal recommendations for music. See the FFmpeg filters documentation.

The available YouTube live encoder guidance gives no LUFS target. A value such as −14 LUFS should therefore not be described as an official YouTube Live requirement. There is no single target established here for every genre, playlist or production. Choose settings that preserve the music’s intended dynamics and avoid unexpectedly large level changes, then check how the actual program behaves.

Test the real playlist and transitions
Measure representative passages and transitions from the playlist you plan to run. FFmpeg’s ebur128 filter can measure loudness; loudnorm can also report measurements in its summary. Use those readings to evaluate the processed program and adjust your chosen targets if needed. They describe the audio; they do not certify YouTube compliance.
Use single-pass mode for a continuous live feed
FFmpeg documents single-pass loudnorm operation for livestreams and double-pass operation for files. For a continuous feed, single-pass is the practical starting point; two-pass processing is not a prerequisite for livestreaming. If instead you are preparing a fixed audio file in advance, two-pass processing may be appropriate when you can measure the file first.

Dynamic and linear modes
The filter supports dynamic and linear normalization. Linear operation requires measured integrated loudness, LRA, true peak and threshold values. If its documented conditions are not met, the filter may revert to dynamic normalization. Do not assume that specifying targets alone guarantees linear operation; check the filter’s reported behavior and measurements in the FFmpeg documentation.
Match audio encoding to the YouTube ingestion protocol
Loudness processing and encoder settings solve different problems: loudnorm shapes program level, while codec, sample rate and bitrate govern the encoded audio sent to YouTube. Use settings for the protocol you selected.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Stereo RTMP/RTMPS
YouTube’s live encoder settings list AAC or MP3 for stereo RTMP/RTMPS and recommend a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps audio bitrate. The guidance lists CBR for live-stream encoding. Test the stream before going live and monitor stream health during the event.
HLS
HLS has separate requirements. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance lists AAC, AC3 and EAC3 audio and recommends 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 kbps stereo in its advanced settings. Follow its segment-handling requirements as well; do not assume the RTMP/RTMPS settings cover HLS.

Keep a 24/7 feed healthy after launch
Normalization cannot compensate for a bad encode, unsupported codec or unstable connection. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, checking stream-health messages, leaving bandwidth headroom and monitoring audio and video quality continuously. Its streaming tips explain those operational checks.
- If YouTube reports an unsupported live audio codec, confirm that the codec matches the selected ingestion protocol; YouTube’s live streaming error guidance flags unsupported codecs.
- If a bitrate warning appears, check the encoder’s audio bitrate against the protocol guidance; YouTube’s troubleshooting page gives a 128 kbps audio recommendation.
- If the audio level seems uneven, inspect representative quiet and loud sections and transitions, then review loudness and true-peak measurements rather than assuming the filter target is a YouTube rule.
- If the stream health is poor, check the encoder and connection as well as audio settings. A loudness filter alone does not guarantee a clean feed.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube music stream to continue without leaving your own FFmpeg computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once and go live; StreamNeo loops it from the cloud. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed.
