For one prerecorded video that is already encoded and only needs to be looped and sent to YouTube, 1–2 vCPU and 1–2 GB of RAM is a reasonable VPS starting estimate—not a YouTube requirement or a guaranteed minimum. If the VPS must encode, resize, filter, composite, or send multiple streams, there is no reliable universal CPU or RAM figure: benchmark the exact workload. YouTube publishes stream settings and bitrate recommendations, not a minimum VPS specification.
Start by identifying what the VPS has to do
“Streaming” can mean simply reading an encoded file and transmitting it, or it can mean producing the video on the server. Those workloads have very different compute needs. The 24/7 duration does not, by itself, increase CPU demand; it makes sustained resource limits, network capacity, and recovery more consequential.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Playback and forwarding: A prepared video is already encoded at the target resolution, frame rate, and codec. The VPS reads it, loops it if needed, and sends it to YouTube.
- Encoding or production: The VPS converts or resizes video, applies filters or overlays, composites scenes, or encodes a camera or other live source. Software encoding is particularly dependent on the CPU.
- Multiple outputs: Concurrent streams or output formats add work. Measure the combined workload rather than assuming each additional stream requires exactly the same resources.
YouTube’s live encoder guidance covers resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and transport, but does not set a CPU or RAM requirement for the computer or VPS sending the stream. YouTube also transcodes an incoming stream for viewers, so the host generally needs to produce the chosen input stream rather than a separate encode for every viewer. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Choose a starting VPS size by workload
| Workload | Planning guidance | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| One prerecorded file, already encoded at the target settings; FFmpeg mainly reads, loops, and transmits it | 1–2 vCPU and 1–2 GB RAM is a modest starting estimate, not a tested guarantee or official specification. | Check that the process is not encoding unexpectedly. Monitor CPU and memory during a representative sustained run, and confirm the provider’s transfer allowance and network stability. |
| One stream with software encoding, resizing, filters, overlays, or scene composition | No universal vCPU or RAM figure is defensible. Benchmark the exact job. | Test the target resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder preset, filters, audio, and production software. Confirm that encoding stays real time with headroom; account for software, buffers, and the operating system in RAM planning. |
| Multiple simultaneous streams or outputs | Size from the combined measured load; do not assume resources scale linearly. | Measure CPU, memory, and outbound traffic while all outputs run at once. Check for CPU scheduling constraints and provider limits. |
These are workload-based planning estimates, not benchmark results. A nominal vCPU count alone cannot guarantee sustained performance: VPS providers may share or constrain CPU resources. If encoding falls behind real time during a representative test, add capacity or simplify the processing rather than relying on a larger RAM allocation to solve a CPU bottleneck.

Plan outbound bandwidth as carefully as CPU and RAM
A stream that stays live around the clock continuously uses outbound traffic. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends the following ingestion bitrates. They are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS or network can sustain them.
| Output | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 or 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 4K at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 4K at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
As a rough calculation, a constant 1 Mbps stream sends about 324 GB in 30 days, before protocol overhead. That works out to about 3.24 TB at 10 Mbps or 4.54 TB at 14 Mbps. These are arithmetic estimates from bitrate multiplied by time, not YouTube-published transfer figures. Actual provider accounting may differ; check included monthly transfer, overage charges, and whether the plan can sustain the required outbound rate through reconnects.

YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream, then watching stream health and messages. A speed test alone does not establish that a VPS provider will sustain a particular bitrate continuously. Use the real stream settings and a representative test when checking the host. See YouTube’s testing and stream-health guidance.
Use RTMPS and supervise the streaming process
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its technical guide requires a valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and port 443, and describes the TLS and hostname requirements. Use the endpoint and stream key shown for your YouTube broadcast; do not expose the key in public logs, screenshots, or shared commands. Read Google’s RTMPS ingestion requirements.

For a self-managed VPS, arrange for the streaming process to restart after a process failure or server reboot, and monitor whether it is running and whether YouTube reports a healthy ingest. A service manager or process supervisor can help, but no particular supervisor guarantees uninterrupted service. Test recovery deliberately: a process that starts at boot is not necessarily one that reconnects successfully after a network or ingest interruption.

What to check before paying for a VPS
- Sustained CPU allocation: Ask whether the advertised vCPUs are shared or subject to sustained-use limits, especially if you will encode in software.
- RAM and workload: Include the OS, media handling, buffers, containers, and any production software—not just the streaming process.
- Outbound transfer: Compare the plan’s included monthly traffic with the chosen bitrate and 24/7 schedule. Check overage policy and outbound network capacity.
- Network behavior: Confirm the provider’s network route and reliability are suitable for a continuous connection; test from the actual server when possible.
- Recovery and monitoring: Know how to check the process, logs, system load, and YouTube stream health, and how to restart the stream if it stops.
Troubleshoot a stream that struggles to stay live
- CPU stays saturated or encoding falls behind: Check whether the command is encoding, resizing, or applying filters when you expected only playback. Reduce processing or benchmark on a VPS with more sustained CPU capacity.
- Memory grows or the process is stopped: Inspect system and process logs for memory pressure. Account for buffers, containers, and production software; add RAM only if measurement shows memory is the constraint.
- YouTube reports unstable ingest: Test the real bitrate from the VPS, inspect network drops and stream-health messages, and confirm the VPS has adequate sustained outbound capacity and transfer allowance.
- The stream stops after a disconnect or reboot: Check whether the process restarted, whether it reconnected to a valid ingest endpoint, and whether its stream key and configuration are still available. Test the recovery path instead of assuming automatic restart worked.
- Transfer use is higher than expected: Recheck the configured video bitrate, how the provider counts traffic, and whether reconnects or other services add egress. The 30-day figures above exclude overhead.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos live on YouTube rather than manage a server, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
