Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To stream a prerecorded video from an Indian Linux VPS to YouTube Live, install FFmpeg, copy the video to the server, then run FFmpeg at real-time speed to send it to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest URL with your stream key. The VPS must have enough CPU to encode the chosen output and enough sustained outbound bandwidth for its video bitrate, audio, and overhead.
Before you start
- A Linux VPS with shell access and permission to make outbound connections to YouTube over port 443. Check the provider’s sustained outbound capacity, CPU allocation, traffic policy, and route to YouTube; an advertised network speed does not establish that a server can sustain your chosen stream.
- A prerecorded video file stored on the VPS, or a way to transfer it there.
- FFmpeg with the required encoders and RTMPS support. Package capabilities vary by distribution and build.
- A YouTube channel with a live stream created or scheduled in Live Control Room.
This guide sends a video file as a live stream; it does not stream a camera. The command below is an illustrative starting point, not a tested command or a guarantee for every source, build, or VPS.

Prepare the video and check FFmpeg
Install FFmpeg and inspect the input
Install FFmpeg from your Linux distribution’s trusted packages or an appropriate official project build. Check that your installed build supports the encoders you intend to use; the example below needs libx264 and AAC. The accompanying ffprobe tool can report a file’s codecs, frame rate, resolution, and audio streams:
ffprobe -hide_banner -i /srv/media/video.mp4
Use a stable path readable by the Linux account that will run the stream. Confirm the file plays correctly and includes the audio you expect before going live.

Choose copy or transcode
Transcoding to H.264 video and AAC audio is a conventional path for conforming the output to YouTube’s ingest guidance. It uses CPU, and software encoding can become CPU-bound at higher resolutions or frame rates. If the source already meets YouTube’s codec, frame-rate, keyframe, pixel-format, and audio requirements, stream-copying with -c:v copy -c:a copy may reduce CPU use. Copying does not fix a noncompliant source.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream.
- Open the stream settings and copy the current RTMPS URL and stream key. YouTube Help says the RTMPS URL is revealed from the lock icon beside the Stream URL. Use the complete URL shown there, rather than an endpoint copied from an old tutorial. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
- Keep the stream key secret. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that stream. Do not put a real key in an article, screenshot, source repository, terminal transcript, or shell history. For unattended jobs, prefer protected environment injection or a secret manager, and restrict who can inspect process and environment data on the VPS.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. The URL uses the rtmps scheme and the RTMPS ingestion connection uses port 443; use the exact host and application path supplied for your stream.
Set bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval with a four-second maximum. For a straightforward FFmpeg setup, the example uses H.264 and AAC. YouTube’s published stereo audio recommendation is 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps.

| Output mode | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | Video bitrate only; allow additional capacity for audio and transport overhead. |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | Video bitrate only; allow additional capacity for audio and transport overhead. |
These are YouTube’s recommendations as accessed on 2026-10-03, not independently measured outcomes. Recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. Select an output your VPS can encode and sustain over its real outbound route, and preserve the source’s aspect ratio. If resizing is necessary, use a deliberate scale-and-pad filter rather than stretching the image.
The command below targets 1080p30 at 14 Mbps video. Its 60-frame GOP at 30 fps gives a two-second keyframe interval. If you change the frame rate, recalculate the GOP length to retain that interval.
Run FFmpeg and send the video
Replace the placeholders with the complete RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and the path to your video. Do not expose a real key in shared terminal history or logs.

STREAM_URL='rtmps://<host-from-live-control-room>:443/<application-path>/<stream-key>'

-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "$STREAM_URL"
The -re input option makes FFmpeg read the file at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), rather than sending it as quickly as the file and server can produce data. Put it before the input it governs. FFmpeg applies options in order to the next specified input or output, so keep input options before -i and output settings after it. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

The example assumes a suitable source and an FFmpeg build with the named encoders. It does not resize the video; its selected frame rate and output parameters may alter the source. If you need a different resolution or frame rate, choose those deliberately and match the GOP to the chosen frame rate. A finite input file ends when FFmpeg reaches its end; continuous repetition is a separate requirement, and loop behavior can vary by build. Verify loop syntax against the installed FFmpeg manual before relying on it.
Test the stream and keep it running
Verify the signal before an event
Run a short test with both movement and audio, as YouTube recommends. In Live Control Room, confirm that the signal arrives and check sound, motion, resolution, frame rate, stream health, and any error messages before making the broadcast public.

Run unattended with supervision
For an unattended stream, use a service supervisor such as systemd or a terminal/session manager, and check its logs, restart behavior, and access to the media file. Tailor the service to whether the stream is scheduled, finite, or intended to repeat; no single service unit or restart policy fits all three. A process restart alone does not establish that YouTube will receive a healthy signal, so monitor both the VPS process and YouTube’s stream health.
Troubleshoot common failures
- SSL or certificate error: Confirm the current Live Control Room URL uses
rtmps, and check the host, application path, port 443, and TLS handling. Do not substitute a guessed endpoint. - Connection timeout: Check outbound connectivity from the VPS to the RTMPS endpoint on port 443, verify the exact URL and key, and ask the provider whether outbound traffic is restricted. YouTube’s RTMPS help identifies URL and RTMPS support as things to check.
- The file plays too quickly or timing is wrong: Put
-rebefore the relevant file input so FFmpeg reads that input in real time. - Dropped frames or unstable ingestion: Compare the route’s sustained outbound capacity with the video bitrate plus audio and overhead. Reduce output resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it, then test again.
- CPU saturation: Check server CPU use during encoding. If the source already complies with YouTube’s requirements, consider stream copy; otherwise, lower resolution or frame rate, use a less demanding encoding setup, or choose a host with adequate CPU. No VPS plan is guaranteed to handle a particular encode.
- No audio or the wrong stream selected: Inspect the source streams with
ffprobe. For unusual inputs, explicitly select streams with-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?, and confirm the output audio codec and sample rate.
Follow YouTube’s content rules
Technical ingest settings do not grant rights to the video or music. Use material you own or have permission to stream, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream policies before broadcasting. A technically healthy stream can still face a copyright claim, restriction, or interruption; no encoder setting prevents those outcomes.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream rather than managing FFmpeg on a VPS, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode or use quality tiers. It includes 10 GB storage per slot, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this guide send a live camera feed?
No. It reads a prerecorded file from the VPS and sends that file to YouTube Live.
Can I use a stream key from an older tutorial?
Use the current RTMPS URL and stream key shown for your stream in Live Control Room; do not rely on a hard-coded endpoint from an older guide.
