Use an exchange-rate alert when you want a notification and the final say. Use an automatic conversion or limit order when you have already chosen the amount and want the service to attempt the exchange at a threshold. Use a guaranteed-rate transfer for a near-term payment you can fund before a stated deadline. For a known business payment months ahead, an FX forward can fix the rate, but it is a binding contract with deposits, fees and possible losses if you cancel or cannot settle.
These tools are not interchangeable. Availability, supported currencies, timing, fees and eligibility depend on the provider, account type and country.

Choose the mechanism before you set anything
The word “lock” is used loosely in currency apps. The following four products have different outcomes and risks.

How to create a notification-only exchange-rate alert
An alert answers one question: has the market reached my target? It does not reserve the rate, place an order or guarantee that your later conversion will use the same price.

Wise alert path
Wise documents this workflow for its consumer accounts:
- Open your profile area.
- Select Notifications.
- Choose Exchange rate alerts.
- Select the currency pair and target rate, then choose email or push notification.
- Save the alert and make sure your phone or email account permits notifications.
Wise says it sends an email or push notification when the market reaches the selected target. At that point you still need to open the account, review the current quote, enter the amount and confirm the conversion. If the rate has moved, the transaction uses the rate shown when you submit it, not necessarily the rate that triggered the alert.
Set a useful target
- Define the direction correctly. A target for buying euros with dollars is not the same as a target for buying dollars with euros.
- Choose a rate that reflects the amount you actually need. A headline market rate may not equal the final customer quote after the provider’s conversion fee.
- Use more than one alert if you would make different decisions at different thresholds, but remove obsolete alerts so an old target does not prompt an unnecessary transfer.
- Keep notifications enabled on the device that will be with you. An alert is useful only if you can act before the quote changes materially.
How automatic conversions and limit orders work
Automatic execution is the next step beyond an alert. You specify a currency pair, amount and desired rate. The service monitors the market and attempts the exchange when its conditions are met. A trigger is not an unconditional promise: the account must be funded, the pair must be eligible and the provider must be able to execute under its market and operational rules.

Wise describes Auto Conversions as a way to choose the currencies, amount and desired exchange rate, then convert automatically when that rate—or a better rate—is available. The required funds must already be in the relevant currency balance or Jar, and both currencies must be eligible for the feature.
Wise says the selected rate must remain live for at least one minute before the Auto Conversion can complete. It also documents a maximum of 15 pending Auto Conversions at one time, subject to currency-specific limits. A pending instruction therefore may remain open until the target is reached, the instruction is cancelled or a provider rule prevents execution.

Revolut limit and stop orders
Revolut’s U.S. help documentation separates two order types:
- A limit order seeks to buy or sell at a preferred rate and executes only if the market reaches that level.
- A stop order triggers when the rate reaches a specified level and is commonly used to limit the effect of an unfavorable move.
The documented app path is Home → More → Exchange → Market order → Stop order or Limit order. Revolut cautions that limit orders are not guaranteed; they exchange only if the market reaches the chosen limit price.
For the fiat orders covered by that U.S. documentation, the stated weekend window is 5 p.m. Friday to 6 p.m. Sunday Eastern Time. Orders do not execute during that window. Revolut also says an order cannot be edited after setup: cancel it and create a new order if the amount, pair or threshold changes.
What can prevent an automatic conversion
- Insufficient balance: the required amount is not available in the specified currency or account location.
- Unsupported pair: one or both currencies are outside the provider’s eligible list for that feature.
- Timing rules: the market reaches the target during a period when the service does not process the order.
- Execution condition: the price touches a displayed level only briefly, fails the provider’s minimum-live-time rule or does not meet the provider’s execution price.
- Changed instruction: the order was cancelled, expired or left pending while you expected an immediate conversion.
Before relying on automation, confirm the pending order’s status, the funded balance, the pair’s eligibility and the provider’s definition of a triggered price. Do not assume that seeing a target on a chart means your order has filled.
How to lock a rate for a near-term transfer
A guaranteed-rate transfer is a short-duration commitment attached to one transfer. It is different from a live-rate transfer, where the conversion uses the rate active when the provider receives and processes your payment.

Guaranteed versus live rates
Wise documents guaranteed-rate periods of roughly 2 to 48 hours, depending on the currency. The exact deadline is shown for the individual transfer. With ACH funding, Wise says the rate is locked when you authorize the payment. With other payment methods, the rate is locked once Wise receives the full amount before the displayed deadline.

For a live-rate transfer, Wise warns that the rate is not guaranteed. The conversion uses the rate active when Wise receives and processes the payment, so starting a calculator or transfer quote does not by itself create a lock.
Practical steps for a guaranteed-rate transfer
- Start a transfer for the exact currency pair and amount you intend to send.
- Review the quote for an explicit guaranteed-rate label and read the deadline, including the time zone if shown.
- Check which funding event creates the lock: ACH authorization or receipt of the full amount, depending on the payment method.
- Complete the required authorization or payment early enough for the provider to receive cleared funds before the deadline.
- Check the transfer status. If the deadline passes or the full amount is not received in time, obtain a new quote rather than treating the old display as valid.
The guarantee applies to that transfer only. It does not reserve the same rate for a second transfer, a different amount or a later date.
How an FX forward locks a future business payment
An FX forward is the appropriate “lock it today for a known future payment” concept when an eligible business needs currency on a specified future date or within a defined delivery window. It is not a stronger version of a consumer alert. The business commits to exchange the agreed amount at the agreed rate, even if the market later becomes more favorable.

The documented terms include a 5% collateral deposit and a 0.55% booking fee shown before confirmation. Wise says the remaining 95% must be available in the required currency at least one business day before settlement. The feature is not intended for trading or speculation.
If the conversion is cancelled or cannot settle, Wise says the customer can remain responsible for booking costs and market losses associated with unwinding the contract. That exposure is why a forward should be sized to a payment the business expects to make, not to a hoped-for market direction.
Revolut Business forwards
Revolut Business describes an FX forward as a binding agreement to exchange a specified amount of one currency for another at a fixed rate on a future date or within a defined delivery window. Its documentation says the service is for commercial purposes, not investment or speculation.
Revolut’s business guidance states that forwards can generally be arranged up to 12 months in advance, or up to two years with a credit check. It may require an additional deposit or a margin call if the market moves unfavorably. The exact credit, collateral and currency requirements are account-specific.

Forward-contract decision checklist
- Identify the underlying payment, its currency, amount and expected settlement date.
- Confirm that your country, business account and currency pair are eligible.
- Read the collateral, booking-fee, margin-call and settlement requirements before accepting.
- Ensure the business can provide the required balance by the stated pre-settlement deadline.
- Model what happens if the payment is delayed, reduced, cancelled or made in another currency.
- Accept that a favorable market move does not cancel the obligation to transact at the agreed rate.

These figures are provider-specific documentation, not universal industry limits. Features, fees, supported currencies and navigation can change, so verify the terms displayed in your account before placing an order or signing a forward.
Which option should you use?
Choose an alert when
- You are watching a rate but have not decided whether to convert.
- The amount or timing may change.
- You want to compare the triggered rate with the complete quote before committing.
Choose automatic conversion or a limit order when
- The amount is already decided and the target is firm.
- You can leave the required funds available until execution.
- You understand that the order may remain pending or fail under eligibility, timing or execution rules.
Choose a guaranteed-rate transfer when
- You are ready to fund a specific near-term payment.
- The displayed deadline gives enough time for your payment method to meet the provider’s lock condition.
- You do not need the rate held beyond that transfer.
Consider an FX forward when
- You are an eligible business with a known future obligation.
- Budget certainty is more important than benefiting from a later favorable market rate.
- You can meet collateral, margin and settlement requirements and accept cancellation exposure.
Troubleshooting common failures
The alert never arrived
Check that the target was saved for the correct direction, that push or email permissions are enabled, and that the pair is supported. An alert may also be delayed by device or email filtering; check the provider’s notification center rather than assuming that no message means the target was not reached.
The automatic conversion is still pending
Review the order’s status, funded balance and currency eligibility. A target that has not stayed live for the provider’s required period, a market-hours restriction or a temporary service rule can leave the instruction pending.
The limit order did not execute after the chart touched the price
For Revolut’s documented orders, the stated rule is that the market must reach the set limit price; a nearby or briefly displayed quote is not a fill guarantee. Check whether the touch occurred during the documented weekend window and whether the order is still active.

Read the transfer’s deadline and the funding condition. If full funds were not received, or the required authorization was not completed in time, start a new transfer and review its new quote. Do not send money relying on an expired display.
The business cannot settle a forward
Contact the provider before the settlement date. A cancellation or failed settlement can leave the business responsible for booking costs and the market difference needed to unwind the position. Keep the required balance available by the stated pre-settlement deadline and do not commit more than the underlying payment requires.
Safety checks before you confirm
- Verify the currency pair, buy/sell direction, amount and decimal places.
- Record whether the quote is live, guaranteed for a transfer or fixed under a forward.
- Capture the expiration, settlement or funding deadline and the relevant time zone.
- Review all conversion, booking, delivery and potential cancellation charges.
- Confirm who bears losses if the market moves, the payment changes or the transaction cannot settle.
- Check country, account-type and currency eligibility in the provider’s current terms.
The central distinction is simple: an alert tells you when to look; an automatic order attempts to transact; a guaranteed transfer holds a near-term quote for one funded payment; and a forward commits a business to a future exchange. Select the least binding tool that still meets your timing and certainty requirement.
