To use different wallpapers, add or choose a Lock Screen wallpaper, tap Customize Home Screen, then select a separate photo or color. Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair only if you want the same wallpaper on both screens.
Set a different wallpaper from Settings
- Open Settings and tap Wallpaper.
- Tap Add New Wallpaper.
- Choose Photos or Photo Shuffle to use personal images, or select one of the built-in wallpaper categories.
- Adjust the wallpaper if you want, then tap Add.
- Tap Customize Home Screen. Choose a photo or color for the Home Screen, or turn on Blur if you want a blurred background.
- Tap Set as Wallpaper Pair only if you want the selected wallpaper on both the Lock Screen and Home Screen.
Apple documents this workflow in its iOS 26 iPhone guide. The separate Home Screen option lets you choose a background independently after adding a wallpaper.

- Touch and hold the iPhone Lock Screen to open the wallpaper gallery.
- Swipe through saved wallpapers to choose one, or tap the add control to create a new wallpaper.
- After adding a wallpaper, tap Customize Home Screen to choose a different Home Screen background instead of applying a pair.
If Face ID does not open the gallery, touch and hold the Lock Screen again, then enter your passcode. Apple describes this gallery method in its iPhone wallpaper support guide and its custom Lock Screen guide.

Choose the right option for each screen
