Does Using a Smartphone for Everyday Tasks Weaken Your Memory?

Does using a smartphone for everyday tasks weaken memory? Current studies distinguish phone presence, active use and different memory abilities—and do not show lasting harm from ordinary use.

Current evidence does not show that using a smartphone for everyday tasks generally weakens memory or causes lasting memory damage. Studies have tested different things: a phone sitting nearby, particular memory tasks in a lab, and the relationship between phone-use patterns and cognitive scores. Those results are not interchangeable.

What studies show about having a phone nearby

A 2024 meta-analysis of smartphone presence combined 166 effect sizes from 33 studies, 53 samples and 4,368 participants. The pooled result was not statistically significant: d = −0.02, standard error = 0.02, 95% confidence interval [−0.06, 0.01], p = .246. The authors also found no moderation by demographics, smartphone dependence, or the methods used to manipulate phone presence and assess cognition. Hartanto et al., 2024.

This analysis concerns a phone being present, not the accumulated effects of using maps, calendars, messaging or other apps over years. It also combines cognitive outcomes rather than proving that every kind of memory is unaffected.

Why some earlier experiments found a cost

In the 2017 “Brain Drain” experiments, participants performed worse on working-memory-capacity and fluid-intelligence measures when their own smartphones were nearby than when the phones were in another room. In the second experiment, participants whose phones were in another room scored higher on an operation-span working-memory task than those whose phones were on the desk. Whether the phone was powered on did not account for the result; the authors reported that smartphone dependence moderated the effect. These were short, controlled tasks, not evidence of permanent memory loss. Ward et al., 2017.

A 2020 experiment tested short-term and prospective memory—remembering information briefly and remembering to do something later. It found no overall effect of phone presence on either outcome, though it reported a moderation result for prospective memory among participants with low smartphone dependency. The authors concluded that the earlier working-memory finding did not generalize to those memory tasks. Hartmann et al., 2020.

Phone use and memory are not the same question

“Memory” covers different abilities, and the studies do not all measure the same one. A working-memory score, a short-term recall task, prospective memory, learning and episodic recall each capture a particular performance under particular conditions. A result in one task does not establish that a phone harms—or preserves—memory as a whole.

Likewise, phone presence, active use, logged screen time, checking frequency and self-reported problematic use are different exposures. To interpret a claim about “screen time,” check what was measured and what outcome was tested before applying it to everyday phone habits.

What studies of everyday use have found

A 2023 latent-variable study followed 260 young adults across multiple sessions. It combined logged screen time and checking measures with nine executive-function tasks. The researchers found no evidence that normative self-reported use, screen time or checking was associated with latent factors for inhibitory control, task-switching or working-memory capacity. Self-reported problematic smartphone use was associated with the task-switching factor. That association does not establish that phone use caused a deficit, and task-switching is not the same as general memory loss. Study record, PubMed.

A separate 2019 paper examined phone presence in relation to learning and memory. It describes “daily-life disturbance” as one component of a smartphone-addiction scale; that is a self-reported measure of interference with activities, not a clinical diagnosis or proof that ordinary smartphone use damages memory. PLOS ONE, 2019.

Does relying on a phone make you forget things?

A phone can store reminders, directions and information so you do not need to remember every detail unaided. But the evidence here does not show that using those everyday tools causes lasting memory decline. It is useful to distinguish remembering information internally from remembering where or how to retrieve it; neither a brief laboratory task nor a screen-time total alone establishes long-term harm.

Adjacent evidence also cautions against broad claims about digital use. An observational analysis of 36,542 participants in Wave 3 of the UK Household Longitudinal Study, collected in 2011–2012, found that internet-use frequency was positively associated with immediate and delayed word recall. This was not a smartphone experiment, and the association cannot show that internet use improves memory. It does show that results about one kind of digital activity should not be generalized to every memory process. Kang and Malvaso, 2024.

How to read claims that phones “hurt memory”

  • Check the exposure: Was the phone merely nearby, actively used, logged over time, or described as problematic by participants?
  • Check the outcome: Was the study testing working memory, short-term recall, prospective memory, learning, or episodic recall?
  • Check the design: A laboratory manipulation can test a short-term task effect; an observational association cannot establish cause; a meta-analysis estimates a pooled effect across the studies it includes.
  • Check the time scale and population: A brief result in a lab or a finding in young adults does not establish lasting effects for every age group or everyday setting.

The available evidence supports a limited conclusion: a salient phone may compete for cognitive capacity in some task settings, but pooled research on mere presence finds no overall effect, and the reviewed studies do not demonstrate lasting memory harm from ordinary smartphone use.
