Check activation at Start > Settings > System > Activation, then verify that the installed edition is Windows 11 Pro and compare it with the license or purchase record. An “activated” status means Windows has associated a key or digital license with the device; it does not prove the license came from a legitimate source or that its use complies with the license terms.
Check Windows 11’s activation status
- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Read the activation status and note any displayed error code. Microsoft identifies this page as the place to check whether Windows is activated. Microsoft’s activation guidance lists statuses such as activated, activated with a digital license, activated with a digital license linked to a Microsoft account, and not activated.
- On the same page, confirm that the installed edition is Windows 11 Pro. Compare it with the edition on your order, receipt, or other license documentation.
Activation is a technical association between a product key or digital entitlement and a device’s hardware configuration. Microsoft explicitly says activation “does not evaluate the authenticity of the copy itself, and it does not guarantee that the copy of Windows is genuine.” An activated device is therefore not, by that fact alone, proof that a key is genuine.

Check what entitlement you actually have
You may have a valid Windows 11 Pro entitlement without having a printed product key. Microsoft distinguishes between a digital license and a product key: the latter is a 25-character code, while some purchases and upgrades use a digital license instead. Microsoft’s product-key guidance describes where to look for each purchase type.

Finding no printed key does not by itself mean you lack a license. Conversely, possession of a 25-character code does not establish where it came from or whether the applicable license terms permit its use on this device.

Assess the license’s source and supporting evidence
Review the purchase record, seller, and terms that came with the Windows license. Microsoft recommends buying from Microsoft or a trusted retailer. Depending on how Windows was acquired, packaging may include a Certificate of Authenticity (COA), proof-of-license label, or holographic features; these can support your assessment, but they are not a substitute for understanding the purchase and license terms. - Keep the receipt, order confirmation, seller details, and any included license or packaging documentation.
- For a used PC, ask the seller or refurbisher what Windows edition is licensed and what proof of license accompanies the device.
- For an organization-managed license, confirm the entitlement with the organization’s licensing administrator.
- Do not post or send your full product key in a public forum.
A marketplace listing or low price cannot establish that a particular key is genuine. Microsoft notes that counterfeit-related validation failures occur among some software bought through online auctions and Windows on used PCs; that warning is not proof that every such purchase is counterfeit.

Make sure the license matches Windows 11 Pro
Windows 11 Home and Pro are separate editions for activation. A Home license will not activate Pro, so compare the installed edition with the entitlement rather than treating every activation failure as evidence of a fake key.

- Pro is installed, but your entitlement is for Home: install or use the edition that matches your license, or obtain a valid Pro entitlement.
- The installed edition and entitlement both say Pro: use the displayed activation error to guide the next step.
If the key is rejected or Windows will not activate
A rejected key is a troubleshooting signal, not automatic proof of counterfeiting. An edition mismatch, use beyond the license terms, a hardware repair that affects activation, or counterfeit software can all be associated with activation or validation problems.

- Return to Settings > System > Activation and note the exact error. If you have a valid, matching key, Microsoft says you can enter it through Change product key on the Activation page.
- For a Pro digital license when Home is installed, follow the troubleshooter route described above.
- For an activation error, consult Microsoft’s Windows activation-error guidance. Error 0x800704CF, for example, indicates that no valid Windows license was found for the device; it does not by itself identify why.
- Check your purchase confirmation, packaging, or COA for the key and contact the seller or organization that supplied the license. Contact Microsoft support if the issue remains unresolved.
Activation versus genuine-Windows validation
Activation and authenticity checks answer different questions. Activation associates a key or digital entitlement with the device; Microsoft describes validation as an online process that checks whether a Windows copy is genuine and whether critical licensing files have been damaged, deleted, or removed. A validation failure can follow a repair that resulted in a different key being installed, use of a license on more devices than its terms allow, or counterfeit software. Neither an activation status nor one error code, considered alone, establishes the full provenance or permitted use of a license.
