Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can navigate without following a stream of GPS prompts by learning to match a map to the landscape, keeping track of landmarks, and checking your position at route decisions. A topographic map and compass give you a broader picture than turn-by-turn directions; a phone or GPS can still be useful as a backup.
Why use a map instead of turn-by-turn directions?
Turn-by-turn navigation tells you what to do next. A map lets you see the wider route and judge how trails, roads, water, terrain, and landmarks relate to one another. The U.S. Geological Survey explains that topographic maps show natural and human-made features, as well as distance and direction. That broader view helps you make decisions when a route changes or a prompt is unavailable.

To read one, start with its legend, which explains the map’s symbols, and its scale, which relates distance on the map to distance on the ground. Contour lines connect points of equal elevation: lines close together indicate a steep slope, while lines farther apart indicate gentler terrain. These features help you check whether the landscape around you fits the route shown. See the USGS guide to finding your way with map and compass.

Choose a map that fits the route
Not every map has enough detail for every activity. The National Park Service says park maps are intended for general reference, orientation, and route finding, but are not designed for specialized activities such as backcountry hiking, water navigation, or mountaineering. For those uses, NPS directs visitors to USGS topographic maps. Choose a map that covers your location and shows the terrain and features your route requires. NPS explains this distinction in its map accuracy guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Explore confidently with the reliable handheld GPS
- 2.2” sunlight-readable color display with 240 x 320 display pixels for improved readability
- Preloaded with Topo Active maps with routable roads and trails for cycling and hiking
- Support for GPS and GLONASS satellite systems allows for tracking in more challenging environments than GPS alone
- 8 GB of internal memory for map downloads plus a micro SD card slot
Prepare before you set out
- Review the route: Trace it on the map and notice likely decision points, such as trail junctions, bends, crossings, or changes in terrain.
- Choose reference landmarks: Note recognizable features along the way so you can compare what you see with what the map shows. NPS recommends reviewing your route and identifying landmarks to use as reference points.
- Bring the right tools: Carry a route-appropriate map and compass, and learn how to use them before the trip. NPS includes a map, compass, and GPS system in its navigation essentials and recommends carrying a physical map as backup.
- Keep electronics supplementary: Download maps to your phone or GPS if useful, and consider an extra phone battery. These tools can help, but should not be your only navigation plan.
For preparation advice, see the NPS Ten Essentials and Outdoor Emergency Plan.
Use a simple map-and-compass routine as you travel
- Check the map before moving. Identify your current point, the next landmark or route feature, and the direction you intend to travel.
- Orient the map. Use your compass to align the map with the surroundings so that mapped features and directions make sense. A compass can help establish direction, but the correct way to account for magnetic declination depends on your compass, map reference, and location. Follow the instructions for your particular map and compass rather than applying a universal adjustment.
- Compare the terrain with the map. As you go, check visible landmarks, trails, roads, water, and slope against their mapped positions. Contour spacing can help you judge whether the ground ahead matches the terrain shown.
- Pause at decision points. At a junction or other route choice, confirm your location and check that the next section still matches the landscape. If it does not, stop to reassess instead of guessing.
The USGS provides a guide to using a compass with a USGS topographic map. Practice its method with your own equipment before relying on it in unfamiliar or consequential terrain. NPS likewise advises: “Know how to use a topographical map, compass or GPS unit before going out.”

What to do if you become disoriented
- Stop and breathe. Avoid making the situation worse by continuing in an uncertain direction.
- Try to establish your location. Use the map, compass, visible landmarks, or a handheld GPS if available. Compare several features where possible rather than relying on a single uncertain clue.
- Retrace your steps only if it is safe. If you can confidently return along a known route without creating additional risk, do so.
- Seek help if you cannot retrace safely. Avoid wandering in search of a familiar-looking landmark. NPS warns that changing location can make it harder for rescuers to find you; stay put unless remaining there presents an immediate threat to life.
These steps follow the NPS Outdoor Emergency Plan.
