How to Set CBR Bitrate in OBS for a YouTube Playlist Stream

Configure OBS’s streaming encoder for CBR, build a looping playlist with VLC Video, and match bitrate to YouTube’s format guidance and your stable upload capacity.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In OBS Studio, open Settings → Output, switch Output Mode to Advanced if needed, then choose CBR under the streaming encoder’s Rate Control and enter a video bitrate in kbps. Build the playlist separately with a VLC Video source in your scene. YouTube’s live encoder guidance calls for CBR; the right bitrate depends on codec, resolution, frame rate, and a stable upload connection.

Set up the YouTube stream and its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
  2. Copy the stream key for that stream. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose the applicable YouTube service option, and enter or paste the key using the available connection method.
  3. Keep the key private: it lets an encoder send a feed to your YouTube stream. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting.

The stream key connects OBS to YouTube; it does not configure the playlist or bitrate. Those are separate parts of the setup.

Add and loop a playlist in OBS

  1. Select or create the scene you intend to broadcast.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video.
  3. Open the source properties and add the media files to its playlist. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default, so the playlist restarts when it reaches the end. Shuffle Playlist defaults to off.
  4. Preview the scene and confirm the playlist displays and plays as intended before streaming.

VLC must be installed for VLC Video to appear. Match its architecture to OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If you have one file rather than a playlist, OBS’s Media Source can loop that file, but its Loop setting defaults to off; enable it if you want playback to restart.

Choose a YouTube video bitrate

Pick the codec, output resolution, and frame rate first. YouTube’s live encoder guidance organizes bitrate by those variables, so there is no single correct rate for every OBS stream. For H.264, YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these examples:

H.264 ingestion format YouTube minimum video bitrate YouTube recommended video bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These figures apply to the listed H.264 formats, not all codecs or frame rates. YouTube also publishes guidance for other resolutions and for AV1 and H.265/HEVC; use the row for the format you actually send. A playlist with mostly static imagery and one with fast movement can look different at the same rate, so test representative content rather than assuming a number guarantees a particular picture quality.

Set CBR and supporting encoder options

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Output. If the streaming controls do not show the needed encoder options, set Output Mode to Advanced.
  2. In the streaming encoder settings, select CBR for Rate Control.
  3. Enter the chosen video bitrate in kbps. For example, 14 Mbps is 14,000 kbps; use the value that matches your chosen YouTube format and your connection capacity.
  4. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
  5. Use a supported codec and audio format for the protocol and stream configuration. YouTube’s standard RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transport.

OBS control labels and available options can differ by version, operating system, and selected encoder. If your encoder does not expose a particular option in that location, check the controls for the encoder actually selected. Specialized HDR or HLS workflows may have additional requirements beyond this standard setup.

ZowieBox enables bidirectional conversion between HDMI and SRT streams, allowing reliable remote production, live streaming, and video contribution workflows with high-quality transmission even across long-distance networks.

Keep audio settings distinct from video bitrate

The bitrate figures in the table are for video, not the combined stream. YouTube’s recommended advanced settings list 128 Kbps for stereo audio or 384 Kbps for 5.1 surround sound, with a 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1 sample rate.

Check upload capacity before broadcasting

The configured bitrate has to fit a connection that can sustain it. YouTube recommends testing upload performance, leaving 20% headroom, and accounting for a backup stream if one is in use. Treat this as available upload capacity after other traffic, not just the advertised speed of the internet plan.

Troubleshoot common failures

OBS does not show CBR or the streaming encoder controls

Confirm you are viewing Settings → Output and switch Output Mode to Advanced if the simpler view is hiding options. Encoder names and controls vary by OBS version, operating system, and hardware; inspect the selected streaming encoder’s own settings.

The playlist source is missing

Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and check the Sources panel again.

OBS drops frames or disconnects

OBS troubleshooting identifies an unstable Wi-Fi connection as a possible cause. Try a wired connection, then lower the video bitrate if dropped frames or disconnections continue. Recheck YouTube stream health after each change; do not raise the rate above what the connection can sustain reliably.

YouTube does not accept the feed

Check that OBS is using the stream key for the selected YouTube live stream and that the encoder is sending a supported configuration. If you changed or exposed the key, use the current key in OBS. Verify the codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, and protocol against YouTube’s requirements for that stream type.

Before making the stream public

A technically valid feed does not establish that every playlist video is permitted to be broadcast or eligible for monetization. Confirm that you have the necessary rights to the video and audio, and review YouTube’s copyright and reused-content policies for your channel and content. CBR is an encoder setting; it does not grant content rights or resolve policy eligibility.
