What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A reconnect does not by itself mean YouTube is receiving your radio livestream again. In YouTube’s stream-status terminology, active means data is arriving at YouTube; inactive means it is not. Check the incoming feed in Live Control Room, then verify the encoder destination, stream key, connection and scheduled-stream settings before assuming the viewer-facing offline label has one particular cause.
Check whether YouTube is receiving the stream
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for the broadcast. Check whether the preview shows your incoming audio or video and read the stream-health messages. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during the event. YouTube’s encoder settings and stream-health guidance describe the checks available there.
- Check the stream’s status. YouTube defines active as the backend receiving stream data and inactive as not receiving it. The status and health information can help distinguish a missing incoming feed from an assumption based only on the viewer-facing page; they do not identify one universal reason for this reconnect symptom. See YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation.
- Compare the YouTube preview with the public watch page. If the preview has returned but viewers still see offline, use the stream status and health messages to establish what YouTube is receiving before changing the broadcast. The available official guidance does not establish a single display-side explanation for every such case.
Verify the encoder destination and stream key
The stream key identifies the stream to the encoder and lets YouTube accept its feed. Confirm that the encoder is sending to the YouTube stream URL and key associated with this broadcast—not an older, different, or mistyped configuration. YouTube explains how to connect streaming software and manage keys in its Live Control Room setup guidance.

- Check the destination URL and stream key in the encoder against the intended YouTube stream.
- Confirm the encoder reports that it has connected and is sending data, rather than merely being open or attempting to reconnect.
- If the key needs replacement, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder to use the replacement. A reset is not a guaranteed fix if the encoder, network, or broadcast configuration is the actual problem.
Check connection capacity and encoding settings
A reconnect can be followed by another delivery problem if the encoder cannot reliably send the configured stream. Compare the encoder’s output settings with the available upload connection, then review YouTube’s documented encoder guidance for the selected resolution, frame rate and codec.
- Bitrate and connection: choose a quality the available upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends checking upload bitrate and testing before going live; its recommendation tables are configuration guidance, not statistics about how often reconnects cause an offline state.
- Rate control: YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Protocol and codec: use a protocol and codec supported by YouTube for the encoder setup. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s encoder settings reference.
If the encoder is sending but stream health reports a problem, follow the specific health message rather than repeatedly restarting or changing unrelated settings. YouTube advises monitoring health messages during the event.

Review scheduled-stream and automation settings
If this is a scheduled encoder broadcast, check whether auto-start and auto-stop are enabled and whether the encoder is still sending a feed. These settings can be carried over when stream settings are reused, so confirm the configuration for the current event rather than assuming it matches a previous broadcast. YouTube’s streaming-software setup guidance covers the relevant Live Control Room setup.
For future events, YouTube recommends testing the preview, verifying that the event is accessible, testing backup-encoder failover, and monitoring audio and video quality. Stop the encoder after YouTube ends the event. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance.

Troubleshoot by what you observe
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| YouTube reports inactive and the preview is blank | Confirm the encoder is actually sending, then verify the destination URL and stream key. Check the encoder’s connection state and the stream-health messages. |
| The encoder says it reconnected, but YouTube remains inactive | “Reconnected” in the encoder is not proof that YouTube is receiving data. Check the intended destination and key, then use YouTube’s status and preview to confirm whether data arrives. |
| YouTube receives data, but health messages flag an issue | Use the health message to guide checks of upload capacity and encoding settings, including bitrate, CBR and keyframe interval. Avoid changing settings that the message does not implicate. |
| The stream is scheduled or reuses prior settings | Check auto-start and auto-stop and confirm the encoder is sending to the current scheduled stream, not an earlier configuration. |
| The preview appears, but the viewer-facing page still says offline | Compare YouTube’s stream status and health messages with the public page. The documented status definitions establish whether data is arriving, but do not promise a universal explanation or recovery action for a difference in display. |
A key reset, encoder restart, or new broadcast may be appropriate in a particular setup, but YouTube’s published guidance does not establish any of them as a guaranteed recovery sequence for every stream that remains offline after reconnecting.

Copyright and radio-stream content
Technical delivery and YouTube’s right to carry the content are separate questions. Before using recorded music or a continuous radio-style playlist, make sure you have the rights needed to stream it and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules. A healthy encoder connection does not itself establish that the content is authorized or that a stream will remain available. The exact behavior of an audio-only radio service or a particular continuous-loop workflow depends on how it is produced; the encoder guidance above does not resolve every workflow.
