Not for viewers to access as a playlist. A public livestream does not make its private source playlist public. You may be able to play content you can access and capture it in a streaming setup, but YouTube’s official guidance does not confirm that exact workflow for every browser, account, or encoder. Most importantly, playlist privacy is not permission: you need the necessary rights to broadcast the videos.
Three separate questions: playback, audience access, and permission
- Can you access and play the videos? A private playlist is visible only to its owner and people the owner chooses. Whether a particular browser, capture method, or streaming setup can play and capture it is not settled by YouTube’s published guidance.
- Can viewers open the playlist? No—not while it is private, unless they are among the people the owner chose to share it with. Showing playback in a livestream does not change the playlist’s privacy.
- May you rebroadcast the videos? Only if you have the necessary rights. Access to a private playlist does not grant broadcast rights.
YouTube’s Help page on playlist privacy settings says private videos and playlists can be seen only by the owner and people the owner chooses. YouTube’s livestream terms separately place responsibility on the creator to hold the necessary rights for live content, including applicable music rights.

Choose the playlist visibility viewers need
| Setting | Who can access the playlist | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Private | The owner and people the owner chooses. | Personal viewing or limited sharing with selected people—not general audience access. |
| Unlisted | Anyone with the link. The link can be shared by its recipients. | Sharing with an audience that has the link, when you do not want the playlist publicly listed. |
| Public | Anyone. | Open access without requiring a direct link. |
To let your audience open the playlist, change its visibility to public or unlisted in YouTube’s playlist privacy settings. Unlisted is link-accessible, not confidential. Changing visibility affects access only; it does not grant the rights needed to rebroadcast the videos.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. Its guidance on copyright issues with live streams says YouTube may show a placeholder and warn the creator; if the content continues, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A copyright claim may also be made after an archived livestream ends.

- Your own recordings: Confirm that you control the relevant rights, including any music or other third-party material included in the recording.
- Someone else’s videos or game footage: Get permission that covers livestream rebroadcast, not merely permission to view or share a playlist.
- Music: Check that your rights cover live use and any resulting archive. A private playlist does not avoid copyright detection.
YouTube’s livestream terms and copyright guidance describe the creator’s rights responsibilities and enforcement, but they do not establish whether a particular capture card, browser, encoder, or account configuration can capture private-playlist playback. Do not treat technical playback as proof that a stream is permitted.
Does using a gaming encoder or console change the answer?
No. YouTube describes encoders as one way to deliver gameplay and also supports direct streaming from modern consoles. These are delivery methods; they do not change who can access a private playlist or provide permission to rebroadcast the content. Check the current YouTube live-streaming guidance for the available setup options.

Keep the livestream and its archive settings distinct
Your stream’s visibility and the playlist’s visibility are separate controls. Review the live stream’s audience and archive settings independently from the source playlist. A public stream or archive does not grant viewers access to a private playlist.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is platform guidance, not a guarantee of an archive. If you need viewers to access the replay, check the archived video’s visibility after the stream and share that video separately from the playlist.
