Build the system around broad sector ETFs, add a few representative stocks, and include a broad-market benchmark so you can tell a sector-specific move from a market-wide move. An alert is a prompt to investigate—not an automatic buy or sell signal.
What sector-rotation alerts are designed to catch
Sector rotation is the practice of changing exposure among economic sectors as conditions change through the business cycle. Fidelity describes four broad phases: early cycle, mid cycle, late cycle and recession. The framework can help you decide what to monitor, but it is not a timing formula. Fidelity’s 2026 educational summary counts 12 U.S. business cycles since 1945, with an average cycle of about six years; expansions averaged five years and four months, while contractions lasted a little more than 10 months. Those are historical averages, not a schedule for the next cycle.

Rotation alerts are therefore best treated as an observation system. They can tell you that technology, health care, energy or another group has moved sharply, crossed a level or reacted to a catalyst. They cannot establish that a new cycle phase has begun, that a sector will lead next, or that a trade will be profitable. Fidelity also cautions that every cycle differs and that a rotation strategy can add volatility or underperform a broad index.

Why use sector ETFs as the first layer
Sector ETFs provide targeted exposure to an industry group and make it easier to compare sectors on one watchlist. They can simplify tactical allocation because one symbol represents a basket rather than a single company. The trade-off is concentration: a narrow sector fund can be more volatile than a diversified fund, and an ETF’s move may reflect a handful of large holdings.

Use a broad-market ETF or index as a control. If a sector ETF and the benchmark rise together, the move may be market-wide. If the sector moves while the benchmark is relatively quiet, the alert is more useful for investigating sector-specific leadership, weakness or news.
Design the alert before opening the alert menu
Start by writing the action an alert is supposed to trigger. A notification without a follow-up rule quickly becomes noise.
- Sector review: compare the sector ETF with the broad-market benchmark, peer sectors and recent news.
- Risk check: review position size, concentration and whether the move invalidates a written risk assumption.
- Rebalance discussion: examine whether an allocation has crossed a level at which you normally review weights.
- Company research: investigate an earnings report, guidance change, filing or other event behind an individual stock’s move.
Record the symbol, condition, reference period, intended response, delivery channel and review date. This turns an alert into a repeatable process rather than an impulse trigger.

| Alert layer | What it detects | Best use | Typical follow-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Percentage change | A move up or down by a chosen percentage over a reference period or number of bars | Finding outsized moves without watching every symbol | Compare with the market, sector peers and news |
| Price level | A security rising above or falling below a specified price | Decision points such as a prior high, support area, valuation checkpoint or allocation review | Apply the written plan; do not treat the level alone as a signal |
| Earnings and news | A scheduled report or a new event affecting a company | Explaining a large move in an individual stock | Read the release, guidance and relevant filings |
| Technical indicator | Conditions such as an EMA cross, indicator value, chart pattern or strategy event | Systematic monitoring of trend or momentum conditions | Check timeframe, liquidity and whether the condition is still valid |
| 52-week high or low | A new annual extreme | Surfacing breakouts, breakdowns and risk reviews | Check whether the move is supported by volume, fundamentals or a catalyst |
| Volume | Unusually high or otherwise specified trading activity, where offered | Separating quiet price drift from participation-heavy moves | Look for news, earnings, index changes or broad-market stress |
Step-by-step setup workflow
1. Define the universe
- Create a watchlist of the broad sector ETFs you actually follow. Include only sectors you can research when an alert fires.
- Add a small set of representative stocks for each sector. Prefer liquid names whose business and reporting calendar you understand; the purpose is context, not an exhaustive stock screen.
- Add a broad-market benchmark. This lets you classify an alert as market-wide, sector-relative or company-specific.
- Label each symbol by role—sector ETF, representative stock or benchmark—so your response is clear when a notification arrives.
2. Add percentage-change conditions
Use percentage conditions to find large moves relative to a prior close, a selected period or a chosen number of chart bars. Fidelity documents percentage-change alerts. TradingView documents “moving up %” and “moving down %” conditions over a selected number of bars.
There is no universal, evidence-based percentage that defines a large move for every stock or sector. A fixed percentage can be routine for a volatile small company but extraordinary for a broad ETF. Start with a threshold that produces a manageable number of reviews, then adjust after observing your own alert volume. Keep the reference period visible in the alert description; “up 3%” is ambiguous without knowing whether it means one session, five sessions or another interval.
3. Add decision-level price alerts
Set a target-price alert above or below a level connected to your plan. Examples include a prior high, a support area, a valuation checkpoint or the price at which you review a portfolio weight. Fidelity describes alerts when a security rises above or falls below a target price, and Schwab’s documented workflow uses a target-price alert.

Write what you will inspect when the level is reached. A price crossing by itself does not tell you whether the move is durable, overextended or caused by a temporary headline.
4. Add catalyst alerts for individual stocks
For representative stocks, enable earnings-report and news or event alerts where available. A percentage move that arrives immediately after an earnings release should be interpreted differently from an unexplained move on an otherwise quiet day. Record the reporting date and expected time so you can distinguish a scheduled event from an unexpected headline.
5. Add technical, 52-week and volume conditions
Use these conditions selectively. Fidelity Trader+ documents price-movement, 52-week high/low and EMA-cross alerts. TradingView supports alerts on indicators, strategies, drawings and chart patterns. If your platform offers volume conditions, use them as confirmation or a research prompt rather than as proof that a trend will continue.
For every technical alert, specify the chart timeframe. An EMA cross on a five-minute chart and the same cross on a weekly chart are different observations and should not share a label or response rule.
6. Configure delivery, expiration and review
Choose one delivery channel you reliably monitor. Fidelity documents pop-up, sound and configured delivery destinations. TradingView provides trigger-frequency and expiration controls; use an expiration or review date so an obsolete condition does not remain active indefinitely.

Setting alerts in Fidelity
Fidelity’s documented alert features cover price movement, percentage change, EMA conditions and 52-week highs or lows. The exact screen can vary by product and account interface, so confirm the current labels after signing in.
For a sector ETF
- Open the ETF’s quote or watchlist entry and choose the alerts function.
- Create a percentage-change alert for the reference period you want to monitor.
- Add a price-above or price-below alert for the level tied to your allocation review.
- If useful, add a 52-week or EMA condition and state the chart or calculation timeframe in the alert name.
- Select pop-up, sound or another configured delivery destination, then verify that the alert appears in the active-alert list.
For a representative stock
Repeat the percentage and decision-level alerts, then add earnings and news monitoring through the available account tools. When the stock moves, compare the notification time with the earnings calendar and headline feed before deciding whether the event is company-specific or part of a sector move.
Setting alerts in Schwab
Schwab’s documented mobile flow emphasizes target-price alerts and event alerts, including earnings reports and news. It also provides controls for editing open alerts and reviewing triggered alerts.
Target-price alert
- Open the security in the Schwab mobile workflow and choose the alert option.
- Select the target-price condition and specify whether the alert should fire above or below the target.
- Save the alert with a description that identifies the decision it supports.
- Return to the open-alert list to confirm the condition and review or edit it later.
Event alert
For a stock, add an earnings-report alert and a news or event alert when those options are available. Review the triggered-alert history after a move; Schwab documents retention of up to 30 days in its mobile workflow.
Keep a separate audit for mobile, thinkorswim and Schwab.com. Schwab states that mobile alerts are not synchronized with thinkorswim or Schwab.com alerts, so an alert visible in one environment should not be assumed to exist in the others.
Setting alerts in TradingView
TradingView acts as a separate charting and alert layer rather than as your brokerage account’s native workflow. Its documented controls include symbol and watchlist alerts, percentage-over-bars conditions, indicator and strategy alerts, chart drawings and patterns, trigger frequency and expiration.

Percentage-over-bars alert
- Open the sector ETF or stock chart and select the alert creation control.
- Choose the condition for moving up or moving down by a percentage.
- Set the number of bars used as the reference period and confirm the chart timeframe.
- Choose the trigger frequency so repeated notifications do not overwhelm your review process.
- Set an expiration or review date, then save and verify the alert in the alert list.
Indicator, drawing and watchlist alerts
Use an indicator or strategy condition when the rule is explicit—for example, an EMA cross on a stated timeframe. Drawing and chart-pattern alerts can mark a level or formation that you have defined in advance. Watchlist configuration can help you apply a consistent monitoring scheme across several symbols, but the number of alerts and available plan features should be checked in the current TradingView interface.

How to choose a percentage threshold without fooling yourself
Official platform documentation explains how to configure a percentage condition; it does not establish one threshold that works for every stock or sector. Choose a threshold by balancing sensitivity against notification volume.
- Use the instrument’s normal behavior as context: a broad sector ETF and a volatile individual stock should not necessarily share the same percentage rule.
- Match the period to the decision: use a one-session condition for overnight news risk and a multi-session condition for rotation research.
- Pair percentage and benchmark alerts: a simultaneous benchmark move suggests a market-wide event, while a sector-only move deserves a different investigation.
- Review the alert count: if notifications arrive so often that you ignore them, the condition is not useful; if none arrive for months, it may be too insensitive for your purpose.
- Do not backfill certainty: a threshold that happened to identify a past winner is not proof that it predicts the next move.
Reading an alert in context
Sector ETF rises while the benchmark is flat
Compare the move with peer sectors, constituent weights, volume and current news. Check whether one large holding explains most of the ETF’s performance. A relative move can justify research, but it does not by itself establish durable leadership.
Sector ETF and benchmark rise together
Start with market-wide explanations such as economic data, interest-rate expectations or broad risk appetite. The sector may still be outperforming or lagging, so calculate the relative difference before changing an allocation.
Representative stock falls after an alert
Check earnings, guidance, filings and company-specific news first. Then compare the stock with its sector ETF and benchmark. If the entire group fell, the stock may be participating in a sector move; if peers held up, investigate company-specific information.

A practical template for each symbol
| Symbol role | Minimum alerts | Optional additions | Review question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sector ETF | Percentage move and decision-level price | 52-week, EMA or volume condition | Is the move sector-specific, market-wide or driven by a few holdings? |
| Representative stock | Percentage move, price level, earnings and news | 52-week, EMA, indicator or volume condition | What company event or sector change explains the move? |
| Broad-market benchmark | Percentage move | Price level or technical condition | Is the alert part of a broad risk-on or risk-off session? |
Use a consistent naming convention such as “ETF—up 3%—five bars—sector review” or “Stock—below planned level—earnings check.” Include the reference period and intended response in the description so the notification remains interpretable weeks later.

Maintenance and troubleshooting
Too many notifications
- Remove duplicate conditions that trigger the same review.
- Increase the reference period or use a less sensitive percentage condition.
- Reserve catalyst alerts for stocks where you will actually read the release.
- Use expiration dates for temporary monitoring around an event or rebalance.
No notifications arrive
- Confirm that the alert is active and that the symbol, direction, reference period and timeframe are correct.
- Check delivery permissions, sound settings and the destination account.
- Verify that you are looking in the same platform environment where the alert was created; Schwab’s mobile alerts are not synchronized with thinkorswim or Schwab.com alerts.
- Check whether the market was open and whether the condition requires a bar to close rather than an intrabar move.
An alert fires repeatedly
Inspect trigger frequency and expiration settings, particularly in TradingView. Rename or disable a condition after it has served its purpose, and avoid leaving event-specific alerts active after the reporting date.
The move reverses immediately
That is a limitation of notification timing, not necessarily a platform failure. Recheck the quote, spread, liquidity, catalyst and benchmark before acting. Alerts identify conditions; they do not guarantee execution quality or direction.
Risks and limits of a rotation-alert system
- Business-cycle uncertainty: historical phase relationships are tendencies, and each cycle can differ.
- Concentration: sector ETFs focus on a narrow slice of the market and can be more volatile than diversified funds.
- False precision: a percentage threshold or technical cross does not create a universal definition of a large move.
- Event gaps: earnings and overnight news can move a stock beyond a planned level before an alert is reviewed.
- Alert fatigue: excessive notifications cause investors to ignore the conditions that matter.
- Underperformance risk: Fidelity warns that sector rotation can increase volatility or underperform broad indexes.
Use alerts to improve attention and discipline, not to outsource judgment. A written review rule, a benchmark comparison and a check for catalysts are more valuable than adding every available condition.
Monthly audit checklist
- Are all symbols still part of your investment or research universe?
- Does each alert have a stated purpose and follow-up action?
- Are percentage periods and chart timeframes labeled?
- Is the broad-market benchmark active?
- Have temporary earnings, event or rebalance alerts been given expiration dates?
- Are delivery permissions working on the device or destination you monitor?
- Have you checked separate alert lists when using more than one Schwab environment?
- Is the notification volume low enough that you will investigate the next alert?
A robust setup is intentionally modest: broad sector ETFs for the rotation view, representative stocks for company detail, a benchmark for context, percentage alerts for discovery, price levels for decisions, and news or earnings alerts for explanation. Review each notification against that framework before changing an allocation or placing a trade.
