Set the image WordPress shares by adding the right Open Graph metadata—especially og:image—to the page. In Yoast SEO, enable Open Graph data, then choose an image in the post or page’s Social media appearance controls. This works the same way on a Hindi-language site; the reviewed Yoast documentation describes no separate Hindi image-setting workflow.
How social sharing images are chosen
Social platforms and other crawlers use page metadata to identify the image to show with a shared link. The key Open Graph field is og:image. A WordPress featured image may supply that value, but it is one possible source rather than a guarantee: plugin settings, page content, defaults, or competing metadata can affect the result.

Yoast’s documented priority for relevant content is a user-defined image in its Social controls, then the featured image, a prominent image in the content, a content-type default social image, and finally the site-wide fallback. With the relevant Yoast extension, a WooCommerce product gallery can also provide a fallback. Yoast’s Open Graph specification explains this priority.

Verify Open Graph data is enabled
In the WordPress dashboard, go to Yoast SEO → Settings → Social sharing and check that Open Graph data is enabled. Yoast says this is enabled by default in its current instructions, but verify the setting on your site. See Yoast’s Open Graph setup instructions.
-
Choose the image for a post or page
Edit the post or page. In the Yoast SEO sidebar, open Social media appearance and set the social image. You can also specify the social title and description there. This per-page choice takes precedence over the featured-image and fallback options in Yoast’s documented order. See Yoast’s social media preview guide.
-
Set a site-wide fallback
Choose a default social image in Yoast’s site basics settings. It gives content without a more specific image a fallback; it does not replace a social image explicitly assigned to a post or page. Yoast’s current instructions are in its site basics guide.
-
Set the homepage image according to its type
If the front page is a static page, edit it through the post/page workflow and set its social appearance there. If it displays the latest posts, use the homepage section in Yoast SEO settings, as described in the social media preview guide.

Choose between a custom image and a fallback
| Approach | Specificity | Editorial effort | Predictability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Set a social image on each post or page | High: the image is chosen for that content. | Requires assigning images as needed. | More predictable when the page needs a particular preview image. |
| Rely on the featured image | Content-specific if each item has its own featured image. | Uses the image already assigned to the post or page. | Depends on the plugin’s documented behavior and whether another source takes priority. |
| Use a site-wide default | Broad: it can cover content with no more specific image. | Set once as a fallback. | Useful as a fallback, but less tailored to individual pages. |
This comparison follows Yoast’s published image priority. A featured image is not automatically the only input to the final preview.
What is different on a Hindi-language site?
The image-setting steps are the same as for other WordPress sites in Yoast’s documented workflow; the reviewed sources do not specify a Hindi-specific image requirement. Yoast says og:locale derives from the WordPress language settings. That tag identifies locale; it is not a special image format or an instruction to use a Hindi-only image. See the Yoast developer specification.

The sources do not establish universal current image dimensions for every social platform. Avoid treating a single dimension as a rule for all destinations; choose an image suitable for your intended use and check the relevant platform’s current guidance if exact sizing matters.
Check why the wrong image still appears
-
Inspect the page’s Open Graph output
View the page source or rendered metadata and check whether
og:imagecontains the URL you expect. If it does not, review the image assigned in Yoast’s Social controls, the featured image, content images, and the content-type and site-wide defaults in that order.Best Value
-
Look for duplicate Open Graph metadata
Check whether another SEO or social plugin is also outputting Open Graph tags. Yoast warns that duplicate Open Graph tags can cause social sites to display incorrect titles, descriptions, or images. If two plugins emit these tags, configure the site so only the intended source provides them. See Yoast’s Open Graph instructions.
-
Distinguish incorrect metadata from a stale preview
If the page output shows the correct
og:imagebut a sharing preview still shows an old image, the page metadata and the preview are not matching. Social platforms can cache previews, but the reviewed official sources do not establish a universal refresh action or timing, so no single cache-clearing step can be promised for every platform.
