In Selenium 4, import By from selenium.webdriver.common.by, then pass a locator strategy and its value to find_element or find_elements. Use the first when you want one match; it returns the first matching element. Use the second when you need every match; it returns a list.
For example: driver.find_element(By.ID, "lname") finds an element by its id. The reliable choice is the locator that identifies the intended element in the page’s actual DOM—not a strategy assumed to be universally fastest or best.
Set up a locator in Python
Import By and provide the strategy followed by its selector value. These examples assume you already have a Selenium WebDriver instance named driver and the page is open.
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
element = driver.find_element(By.ID, "lname")
The Selenium Python API documents find_element(by, value) and find_elements(by, value) as the element-finding methods. Their return behavior is different, so choose based on whether your code expects a single element or a collection. See the Selenium Python WebDriver API and the project’s Python By API reference.

Choose among Selenium’s eight traditional strategies
Selenium’s locator guide documents these eight strategies. Prefer a specific attribute or relationship that reflects the intended target in the page markup.
| Strategy | What it matches | Example |
|---|---|---|
By.ID |
An element’s id attribute. |
driver.find_element(By.ID, "lname") |
By.NAME |
An element’s name attribute. |
driver.find_element(By.NAME, "newsletter") |
By.CSS_SELECTOR |
An element matching a CSS selector. | driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "#fname") |
By.XPATH |
An element matching an XPath expression. | driver.find_element(By.XPATH, "//input[@value='f']") |
By.CLASS_NAME |
An element with the given class name. The locator guide says compound class names are not permitted. | driver.find_element(By.CLASS_NAME, "field") |
By.TAG_NAME |
An element with the given tag name. | driver.find_element(By.TAG_NAME, "input") |
By.LINK_TEXT |
An anchor whose visible text exactly matches the supplied text. | driver.find_element(By.LINK_TEXT, "Selenium Official Page") |
By.PARTIAL_LINK_TEXT |
An anchor whose visible text contains the supplied text. | driver.find_element(By.PARTIAL_LINK_TEXT, "Selenium") |
The strategy names and examples follow the Selenium project’s locator strategies guide and Python API reference. CSS and XPath can express relationships beyond a single attribute match; neither is a universal performance or reliability winner. Choose based on whether the expression clearly and narrowly describes the intended element.
Decide whether to find one match or all matches
Use find_element for one expected result
find_element returns the first matching WebElement. If several nodes match, it does not report that the locator was ambiguous; it selects the first match. A broad class or selector can therefore point to a different element than intended when page structure changes.

Use find_elements to collect matches
find_elements returns a list of matching WebElements. This is the appropriate choice when repeated elements are expected and your code needs to inspect or act on the collection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesfrom selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
fields = driver.find_elements(By.CLASS_NAME, "field")
for field in fields:
print(field.get_attribute("name"))
When uniqueness matters, inspect the page and choose an attribute or scoped selector that singles out the intended node. The Selenium guide’s examples show that multiple elements may share a class, while a one-element lookup uses the first matching input. See Finding web elements.
Use a relative locator when position conveys intent
Selenium 4 relative locators let you describe a target in relation to another known element: above, below, to_left_of, to_right_of, or near. Selenium documents using JavaScript’s getBoundingClientRect() to determine element size and position for these relationships.

from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.relative_locator import locate_with
email_locator = locate_with(By.TAG_NAME, "input").above({By.ID: "password"})
email = driver.find_element(email_locator)
A relative locator can use a locator or an already located element as its reference. It is useful when a direct stable selector is unavailable and the spatial relationship is clear; it is not a default replacement for a clear ID, name, CSS selector, or XPath. The Selenium locator guide documents these relationships and their positioning basis.
Find elements inside a shadow root
When the target belongs to a shadow DOM, first obtain its shadow root, then search within that context. A lookup on the ordinary driver context does not substitute for searching the root that contains the element.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
host = driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "custom-element")
shadow_root = host.shadow_root
checkbox = shadow_root.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, 'input[type="checkbox"]')
The Selenium finder guide demonstrates locating an element with shadow_root.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, ...); the search is scoped to that shadow root. See Finding web elements.

Choose a locator that stays understandable
- Use an identifying attribute such as
idornamewhen it actually distinguishes the target. - Use CSS or XPath when the DOM relationship or combination of attributes is what identifies the element; keep the expression narrow enough to avoid unintended matches.
- Use link-text strategies only for anchors whose visible text is the intended identifier.
- Check whether a selector can match multiple nodes. Use
find_elementsfor a collection, or refine the locator if one specific target is required. - Use a relative locator only when the spatial relationship is meaningful, and search a shadow root explicitly for elements inside one.
The official documentation does not establish a universal quantitative ranking of locator strategies for speed or reliability. Suitability depends on the markup and browser context, so do not select a strategy solely on a blanket claim that it is always fastest.
Troubleshoot locator problems
The call raises an error because the strategy or value is malformed
Check that the strategy is a supported By constant, the selector value is a string in the expected syntax, and the locator expression matches the intended strategy. For example, use By.CLASS_NAME with a single class name rather than a space-separated compound class.
The lookup returns the wrong element
Your locator may match more than one node. Inspect the page’s DOM and narrow the selector using a distinguishing attribute or relationship. If your intent is to process all matches, use find_elements and handle the returned list.

The element is inside a shadow root
Locate the host, obtain its shadow root, and call the finder on that root with the appropriate By strategy and value. A search scoped to the wrong context will not identify the shadow-root child.
A relative locator selects an unexpected neighbor
Check that the reference element is the one you intended and that the page layout makes the specified spatial relationship unambiguous. Relative locators are based on measured element positions; when the DOM exposes a clear direct identifier, use that instead.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a screenshot rather than interactive browser automation, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. A single GET request can return an image or PDF, without setting up Selenium locators or a browser session in your own code.
