How to Set a Screenshot API to Capture a Page After a Delay

Screenshot APIs use different delay names, units, and limits. Learn how to choose a fixed pause or wait for a page element before capture.

Add your screenshot provider’s documented delay parameter to the capture request, using that API’s units and limits. There is no universal parameter name or syntax: one API may expect milliseconds after page load, while another expects seconds. If the page exposes a reliable element that marks when the content is ready, waiting for that element is often more precise than choosing a long fixed pause.

Choose a fixed delay or a readiness condition

A fixed delay is useful when a page consistently needs a known amount of time after the provider’s load point. A readiness condition is usually better when a specific element reliably indicates that the content you need has appeared. Neither approach guarantees that every animation, image, or later network request has finished.

  • Fixed delay: straightforward, but it waits the same amount of time even when a page is ready sooner. Confirm the unit, default, and maximum in the provider’s documentation.
  • Selector wait: capture after a chosen CSS selector or element ID appears. This ties the wait to page content, but the selector must be stable and its appearance must actually signal readiness for your screenshot.
  • Combined wait: wait for the selector, then add a short fixed delay only if the page needs time to settle visually after the element appears.

Provider-specific delay options

These examples use different APIs and are not interchangeable. Check the current reference for the exact endpoint, request format, and timeout behavior before adapting a parameter.

Provider Documented timing option Unit and documented range Readiness or endpoint detail
ScreenshotAPI.net delay, applied after page load Milliseconds; 0–10,000 ms; default 0 The cited reference describes a fixed delay.
Capture.page delay; also waitFor for a CSS selector and waitForId for an element ID Seconds; 0–60 seconds for the delay; default 0 Its documentation says requests likely to take over 60 seconds should use its edge endpoint rather than its CDN endpoint.
Cloudflare Browser Rendering waitForSelector Follow the API reference for request structure and timeout options Selector waiting is documented for the screenshot endpoint.
ScreenshotEngine waitFor or wait_for, described as a post-load delay Milliseconds; 0–30,000 ms for GET requests Parameter spelling depends on the request convention described in its documentation.

A delay is measured from the provider’s defined lifecycle point, not necessarily from completion of every asynchronous task. Do not copy a number from one provider into another without checking what event starts the wait and what the parameter accepts.

How to add a delay to your request

  1. Identify the capture endpoint and its documented timing option. Check whether it supports a fixed delay, a selector or both.
  2. Confirm the unit and range. For example, 2,000 milliseconds and 2 seconds express the same duration, but an API may accept only one of those formats.
  3. Set the smallest useful wait. For a fixed delay, begin with a duration based on the page’s observed behavior. For a selector wait, choose an element that appears only when the desired content is present.
  4. Make a capture and inspect the result. If content is still missing, verify the load point and readiness signal before increasing the pause. A longer wait cannot fix a selector that appears too early or a page that never reaches the expected state.

Because the title does not name a particular API, there is no single safe request URL or copy-and-paste parameter to give here. Use the provider’s documented request syntax and adapt the provider-specific option above; the same parameter may have a different unit, limit, or meaning elsewhere.

Or skip the browser setup

With ScreenshotNeo, pass the target URL in one request. Its API provides a delay option as well as selector waits, so choose the readiness behavior that suits the page. See the API documentation for the supported parameters.

Troubleshooting delayed captures

  • The parameter is rejected or ignored: confirm the exact parameter name, capitalization, request location, and unit for that provider. Delay names and formats differ between APIs.
  • The screenshot is still missing content: check whether the delay begins after navigation or another lifecycle event, and whether the content loads asynchronously after that point. If possible, wait for a stable selector that marks the content’s appearance.
  • The selector wait never completes: confirm that the selector exists on the rendered page, is spelled correctly, and is available in the page context used by the API. Review the provider’s timeout options.
  • The request reaches a timeout: reduce unnecessary waiting, check whether the page is stalled, and verify any endpoint-specific limit. Capture.page, for example, directs likely over-60-second requests to its edge endpoint rather than its CDN endpoint.
  • The target appears but looks unfinished: the selector may appear before images, fonts, animations, or other visual changes settle. Add a brief provider-supported delay after the selector only if inspection shows it is needed.

Timing, reliability, and cost considerations

A fixed wait can make captures more predictable for a page with consistent timing, but it also adds waiting time to every request. A readiness condition can avoid an arbitrary pause, though it depends on a trustworthy signal and still may not represent completion of every visual change. Choose the shortest condition or delay that produces the required result, and account for the provider’s timeout and endpoint limits.

No universal delay value is established across screenshot APIs. The cited documentation describes provider-specific settings and bounds; it does not establish a general performance benchmark or guarantee that a particular duration will work on every site. No independent timing test is claimed here.
