For an offline copy you can browse, use HTTrack to create a scoped local mirror, then compress the verified output folder into a ZIP with your operating system’s archive tool. A ZIP is just the package: it is not the same as a web-archive record such as WARC or WACZ. Choose the output according to whether you need convenient offline browsing, a file to hand off, or a preservation-oriented capture.
Choose the kind of offline record you need
| Need | Suitable output | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| Browse captured pages offline | Local mirror | A directory of downloaded resources with retained links rewritten for local browsing. HTTrack documents this workflow. HTTrack command-line guide |
| Send or store that mirror as one file | ZIP of the verified mirror folder | A compressed package of the files you captured. Create it after the crawl; ZIP itself does not capture a website. |
| Keep a replayable archival capture | WARC or WACZ | HTTrack documents WARC output and WACZ packaging; WACZ bundles an archive, index, and pages for replay tools. HTTrack documentation |
| Keep a convenient reading copy of one page | Single-page capture or PDF | May be useful for reading, but it is not a complete website mirror. Browser-specific save steps are not covered here. |
A local mirror, a ZIP package, and WARC/WACZ are different layers: the mirror is the captured site files, ZIP packages files, and WARC/WACZ are web-archive formats intended for archival capture and replay. Pick one or combine them if your record needs both offline browsing and a replayable archive.

Create a scoped local mirror with HTTrack
HTTrack describes itself as a website copier that saves a site to a local directory and rewrites retained links for offline browsing. Its documentation covers both a graphical interface and command-line use. Interface labels and command options can vary by version, so consult the current HTTrack documentation for the exact controls available in your installation. HTTrack documentation
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Set a clear scope. Decide which starting page, paths, and site domains belong in the record. Avoid an unrestricted crawl when you need only a portion of a site.
- Choose a destination. Save the project and captured files in a dedicated local directory that you can later review and package.
- Configure access and capture controls. HTTrack documents controls for scope, parsing, link rewriting, and logins. Use authentication only where you are authorized to access the material.
- Run the crawl and review its log. HTTrack follows links it finds and rewrites links it keeps. As its command-line guide explains: “After a page is downloaded, HTTrack parses it for more links and rewrites the ones it kept so the local copy browses offline.”
- Check the result before packaging. Open the saved entry page locally, inspect key links and resources, and note failed downloads or missing pages.
Command-line use
HTTrack documents command-line operation, but this guide does not supply a command because the supported syntax and options should be checked against the version installed and the exact crawl scope. Use the official command-line guide to select the starting URL, destination, and scope options, rather than copying an unverified command. HTTrack command-line guide

Package the mirror as a ZIP
Once you have verified the crawl, use your operating system’s file manager or archive utility to compress the captured output directory. ZIP packaging is a separate step from crawling; HTTrack’s documentation does not establish a universal option that produces one ZIP across its current interfaces.

- Keep the original project and capture output together until you have checked the files you need.
- Select the completed mirror folder in your system’s file manager and choose its option to create or compress an archive in ZIP format. The wording differs by operating system, so follow that system’s current help if the option is not obvious.
- Give the ZIP a descriptive name that includes the site or project and capture date.
- Open the ZIP or extract it to a test folder, then open the saved entry page and check several internal links. Do not assume that successful compression proves the crawl is complete.
Keep the original URL and capture date with the archive, either in its filename or in a short note stored alongside it. The copy records a point in time; the live site may change.
What a mirror can and cannot preserve
A downloaded mirror is not inherently a complete or faithful copy of a website. Pages that depend on user actions, server-side functions, or content loaded dynamically may not behave as they do online. Resources hosted outside the captured scope can also be absent. The Digital Preservation Coalition cautions that tools such as HTTrack and print-to-PDF can flatten web content and may not adequately capture the record; its guidance is older and should not be read as an evaluation of current HTTrack versions. - Interactive behavior and server-side features generally cannot be assumed to work from a static local copy.
- A mirror is useful for offline navigation, but for archival replay consider retaining WARC/WACZ and testing it with the replay tool you intend to use.
Verify and preserve the result
- Open the saved entry page from the local output and follow several internal links with the network disconnected, if practical.
- Check that important images, stylesheets, documents, and other resources are present.
- Review HTTrack’s logs and investigate failed links that matter to your record.
- Retain the original URL and capture date so the snapshot has context.
- If keeping WARC/WACZ, confirm that your chosen replay tool can open the archive.
- Keep a second copy if the record matters. Existing disk or removable storage can hold the files; no dedicated drive is required by HTTrack.
Capture a clean reference screenshot
A screenshot can supplement a mirror with a visual record of a page, but it is not a substitute for downloaded site files or a replayable web archive. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; its API can return an image or PDF from a URL.
Or skip the browser setup:
One GET request captures a page without setting up a browser automation environment. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.

Does saving a website to ZIP make it a complete backup?
No. ZIP packages the files that were captured; it cannot add pages, interactions, or resources the crawl missed.
