How to Set a Reusable YouTube Stream Key for an OBS Video Playlist

Create a reusable key in YouTube Studio, connect it to OBS, and configure VLC Video for an ordered, looping playlist.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To reuse a YouTube stream key with an OBS playlist, create a custom key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, enter YouTube’s stream URL and that key in OBS, then add your videos to an OBS VLC Video source. Turn on Loop Playlist to repeat the sequence and leave Shuffle Playlist off to preserve its order. A reusable key lets an encoder connect again; it does not keep one event or watch page live forever.

What a persistent stream key does—and does not do

YouTube calls the reusable option a custom stream key. It is a credential OBS uses to send an encoder feed to your channel. YouTube also offers Reuse settings when creating another stream, which can copy a prior stream’s settings and key. Neither option makes a single broadcast or watch page continue indefinitely: the stream key, the broadcast event, and its title, privacy, and watch page are separate parts of the setup. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Create a reusable key and connect OBS

  1. Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live, then open the Stream tab.
  2. Create a custom key. In the stream key area, choose Create new stream key, enter the requested settings, and create it. YouTube says a custom key can be reused. Keep it private; it is a credential, not ordinary stream metadata.
  3. Copy the stream URL and key. In OBS, open the streaming settings. Select YouTube if that integration is available; otherwise, enter the YouTube stream URL as the server and paste the key into the Stream Key field. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe these fields. OBS labels and integration options can vary by version and operating system.
  4. Choose how the broadcast starts and stops. Review YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls if you want encoder signals to start or stop the broadcast. YouTube says these selections can be copied with Reuse settings. For a scheduled stream, its encoder workflow has you wait for the incoming preview and then select Go live.
  5. Set the event details. Choose the stream’s title, privacy, and other metadata in Live Control Room. YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted privacy options; the default differs by age group (private for ages 13–17 and public for ages 18+), so check the setting rather than assuming it is correct.

Build the playlist in OBS

Install the matching VLC version

OBS’s basic Media Source plays an individual file. For a playlist, use VLC Video, which requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS documents these distinctions in its Media Sources guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add and configure the playlist

  1. In the OBS scene you plan to stream, add a VLC Video source. OBS’s Sources Guide explains adding and managing scene sources.
  2. Add the video files to the source’s playlist and arrange them in the order you want.
  3. For a fixed sequence, turn Shuffle Playlist off. Turn it on only if you want randomized playback.
  4. Turn Loop Playlist on if the sequence should restart after its last file. Leave it off if playback should end at the end of the list.
  5. Review Visibility Behaviour. It controls what happens to the source when it is hidden, which matters if your scenes change during the broadcast.

Start the stream and verify playback

  1. Make the scene containing the VLC Video source active and check that the source is visible.
  2. Start streaming from OBS. In Live Control Room, confirm that YouTube receives the encoder preview and inspect the picture and sound. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and choose Go live as directed by YouTube’s encoder workflow.
  3. Check the video order, audio, privacy, and loop behavior before leaving the broadcast unattended. The key does not decide which event or watch page viewers see; confirm the active or scheduled event in Live Control Room.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after the encoder stops sending content. That archive behavior is separate from whether the custom key is reusable; a key does not itself preserve one ongoing event.

Protect the key and recover access

YouTube warns that “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not publish or share yours. If you believe it has been exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; update OBS with the replacement key. YouTube says editors and viewers cannot reset a key. Follow its key reset instructions.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom What to check and do
OBS has no VLC Video source Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS. A 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC.
Playlist order is wrong or changes between plays Arrange the files in the VLC Video playlist and turn off Shuffle Playlist for fixed order.
Playback stops after the final file Enable Loop Playlist if you want the sequence to start again after the last item.
Playback pauses or stops after switching scenes Review the VLC Video source’s Visibility Behaviour setting and confirm the source is visible in the active scene.
YouTube receives no encoder signal Check the server/stream URL and stream key in OBS, then confirm the intended key is active in Live Control Room. If the key may have been compromised, reset it and replace the value in OBS.
The wrong privacy setting or watch page is in use Verify the active or scheduled stream and its privacy in Live Control Room. Reusing a key does not select event metadata or manage the watch page.
