For repeatable runs, save and restore the browser context’s storage state. If you seed localStorage directly instead, use the site’s real key and value on the correct origin before its scripts run.
Capture the page after making a real consent choice
A screenshot records the page’s current rendered state; it does not accept cookies or dismiss a banner for you. Use Playwright to interact with the site’s consent control, wait for a visible result, and then capture.
- Open the target page and let the consent interface load.
- Click the site’s actual choice, such as Reject, Accept, or Save preferences.
- Wait for the banner or dialog to become hidden, or assert another meaningful post-choice state.
- Take a viewport screenshot, or set
fullPage: trueto include scrollable content.
Install Playwright in your project with npm install -D playwright. The following runnable ES module uses an example button name and dialog selector; replace them with the target site’s actual accessible control and banner locator.

}The selectors above are examples, not universal cookie-banner selectors. Inspect the page’s accessible controls and choose a locator that matches the site. Consent tools can save a choice asynchronously, so waiting for the banner to disappear or for a known page state is more reliable than sleeping for an arbitrary duration.

Make the choice persist across runs
For a repeatable session, make the choice once through the interface and save Playwright’s browser context storage state after it has been recorded. Supply that state when creating the later context:

Confirm that the later run visits the same origin—the scheme, host, and port must match—and still verify that the page rendered without the banner. A stored value alone does not guarantee the site will interpret it as a valid choice.

When direct localStorage seeding makes sense
Seeding localStorage is useful for a controlled test fixture when you know the target site’s exact storage key, serialized value, and origin. Do not guess a consent manager’s schema: it can change, and a wrong value may be ignored or select a different preference.
Playwright’s page.addInitScript() runs in the page after the document is created but before the page’s scripts execute, making it suitable for setting a known value before the application checks consent. The initialization script must run on the target origin. Do not set localStorage on about:blank and expect it to apply to another website.

Find the real representation by making the choice through the site, then inspect localStorage for that origin, for example in the browser developer tools’ Application or Storage panel. If the consent interface uses cookies or another persistence mechanism rather than localStorage, seeding localStorage will not reproduce the choice; prefer saved browser storage state or the real UI.
Choose the persistence method that fits the test

- Viewport:

Keep visual comparisons reproducible
For Playwright visual tests, expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing against a saved reference. Browser rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. When practical, generate and compare baselines in the same environment. Disable animations or mask dynamic areas only if doing so matches the test’s purpose; either change can hide a real visual regression. See Playwright’s visual comparison guidance.
Troubleshooting
- The banner remains visible: confirm the locator targets the actual choice button and that the choice is permitted in the test environment. Wait for the banner to be hidden or assert the site’s resulting state rather than adding a fixed delay.
- The choice works once but not on a later run: ensure you saved storage state after making the choice, passed it to the new context, and navigated to the same origin. Verify the page after restore.
- localStorage appears populated but the banner returns: check that the key and serialized value came from the site’s actual consent flow, that initialization ran on the correct origin before application scripts, and that the site still uses localStorage for consent.
- The screenshot cuts off lower content: use
fullPage: truefor the full scrollable page instead of the default viewport capture. - Visual snapshots differ between machines: align browser and execution environments where possible; rendering differences can arise from operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, or headless mode.
