Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can loop a prerecorded video into a YouTube Live stream from an AWS EC2 instance in the Mumbai region, ap-south-1, by running FFmpeg with real-time input pacing and an infinite file loop. YouTube supplies the ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room; use its current encoder settings, test the preview, and keep the instance and key secure. The command below is a template, not a YouTube-tested AWS recipe: the documented AWS loop example targets IVS.
What you need before starting
- An AWS account and an Ubuntu EC2 instance in Asia Pacific (Mumbai), region
ap-south-1. AWS identifies this as its Mumbai region: AWS Regions. - A prerecorded video file on the instance, or a way to transfer it there.
- A YouTube channel with access to create a live stream, plus the event’s ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Enough CPU capacity to encode the file at the output resolution and frame rate you choose, plus outbound network access to download packages and reach YouTube’s ingest endpoint.
Do not assume a small instance will encode every file reliably. AWS uses a t2.micro in an IVS tutorial example, but that does not establish it as sufficient for a YouTube workload. Select instance capacity based on the source codec and intended output, then monitor CPU use and leave headroom.

Create and secure the Mumbai instance
- In the AWS console, select the Asia Pacific (Mumbai) region,
ap-south-1, and launch an Ubuntu EC2 instance. Choose its size according to the encoding work you will perform rather than copying the size from an unrelated tutorial. AWS’s documented Ubuntu/FFmpeg workflow is an IVS tutorial: Streaming from an EC2 instance. - Configure a security group. Allow inbound SSH only from your administrator’s IP address; do not expose SSH to every source. Allow outbound access needed for package downloads and YouTube ingest. Security groups act as virtual firewalls for inbound and outbound traffic: Amazon EC2 security groups.
- Wait until the instance passes its status checks. Connect with SSH using the correct instance address and private key, or use an available browser-based option such as EC2 Instance Connect or Systems Manager Session Manager. AWS’s SSH guidance covers prerequisites and troubleshooting: Troubleshoot connecting to your instance.
- Install FFmpeg using the package method supported by your chosen Ubuntu image, then check that it is available with
ffmpeg -version. Package names and versions can vary by image and repository. - Copy the video to the instance and verify its path and readability. For example, use
ffprobe /path/to/video.mp4to inspect its streams ifffprobeis installed alongside FFmpeg.
Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the stream/event and choose the encoder workflow.
- Copy the server/ingest URL and stream key shown for that configuration. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential that lets the encoder send a feed; treat it like a password. Use the exact values displayed in the current Live Control Room rather than assuming a fixed endpoint format: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Prefer the RTMPS destination when YouTube presents it. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts data to and through Google’s servers: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Keep the key out of public scripts, repositories, screenshots and shared terminal transcripts. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in Live Control Room before continuing.
Start the encoder and wait for the event preview and stream-health indicators in Live Control Room. Start the event there as appropriate to its scheduling and event settings; sending data from FFmpeg and making the event public are not necessarily the same action.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends CBR bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. Recommended rates depend on codec, resolution and frame rate; the values below are H.264 recommendations shown in YouTube Help, not performance benchmarks.

| H.264 output | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
Check YouTube’s current table for the complete set of resolutions, frame rates and codecs before selecting a target: YouTube encoder settings. Its guidance also recommends stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps, square pixels, progressive scan and Rec. 709 for SDR. Match the source and intended output; forcing a mismatched frame rate, aspect ratio or color format can degrade or distort the result.
The example below uses H.264 at 720p30-class settings. YouTube lists 6 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p30, so the command uses that value. Its two-second GOP is represented by -g 60 at 30 fps. The AWS example documents the loop flags for an IVS destination, not YouTube; this is a proposed adaptation that must be validated in YouTube preview.

Run the video loop with FFmpeg
Use YouTube’s exact server URL and stream key format. Keep the real credential out of shell history and publicly readable files. One practical approach is to enter the endpoint interactively into a protected environment variable or a permissions-restricted configuration file rather than embedding it in a committed script.

This template re-encodes the source. If you change resolution, frame rate, codec or bitrate, update the flags together and consult YouTube’s current recommendations. A preset such as veryfast trades encoding efficiency for lower CPU demand; if CPU remains saturated or frames are dropped, reduce output complexity or use an instance with more capacity. Do not paste the placeholder endpoint literally: Live Control Room’s URL and key presentation can vary.
Test the stream and keep it running
- Before relying on the loop, test a representative section in Live Control Room. Confirm that the preview appears, picture motion is smooth, audio is present and in sync, and YouTube reports healthy ingest.
- Observe what happens at the file’s end and loop boundary. Check for a gap, abrupt audio transition, unwanted slate or other discontinuity in your particular source.
- Monitor FFmpeg output, CPU load, network connectivity and YouTube stream-health messages. A loop can keep reading the file while the ingest connection or encoding workload has failed, so the process alone is not proof of a healthy broadcast.
- YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited encoder workflow page does not establish what happens for longer continuous broadcasts; check current YouTube limits and policies and plan how the event will be ended and restarted if needed. YouTube says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” YouTube encoder workflow.
- Confirm you have the rights to every video and audio element, and check current YouTube live-stream policies and eligibility before leaving prerecorded material unattended. A technically healthy feed does not establish that the content is permitted.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| SSH connection times out | Instance not ready, incorrect address, or SSH blocked by the security group. | Wait for status checks to pass, verify the address and key, and allow inbound SSH only from your current administrator IP. Consider EC2 Instance Connect or Session Manager if configured. |
| FFmpeg cannot open the input | Wrong path, unreadable file, or unsupported/corrupt source. | Check the file path and permissions; inspect streams with ffprobe and test a short local decode. |
| YouTube shows no incoming video | Incorrect server URL/key, wrong event configuration, blocked outbound access, or incompatible output. | Copy the current endpoint and key again in Live Control Room, verify outbound connectivity and inspect FFmpeg errors. Do not copy AWS IVS ports or endpoint settings as YouTube requirements. |
| Preview appears but stream health is poor | Insufficient CPU, unstable network, or unsuitable bitrate/frame-rate settings. | Check instance CPU and FFmpeg messages, reduce resolution/frame rate if necessary, and match YouTube’s current codec-specific bitrate guidance. |
| No sound or sound is distorted | Missing/unsupported source audio, wrong mapping, or mismatched audio settings. | Inspect audio with ffprobe, test a representative section, and use AAC stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps where suitable for the intended output. |
| The stream stops after an interruption | FFmpeg exited, the instance lost connectivity, or YouTube ended/dropped the ingest. | Inspect the process and logs, restore the connection, and confirm the event remains available in Live Control Room before relaunching. A bare FFmpeg command does not itself provide automatic process supervision. |
| The loop does not look seamless | The file’s start and end frames or audio do not join cleanly. | Edit or prepare a source whose beginning and end transition acceptably, then test across the boundary in preview before a long broadcast. |
Estimate the AWS cost before leaving it on
There is no reliable single cost figure without the instance type, operating system, storage, runtime and network transfer. Continuous streaming means the instance may accrue compute charges for as long as it is running, alongside applicable storage and data-transfer charges. Check current AWS pricing for the selected Mumbai region and configuration before launching; do not infer the cost from an example instance in an IVS tutorial.
