These approaches can choose an image at display time without changing the post’s saved featured image. A different kind of category-image tool writes the image onto posts, which can replace existing selections. Decide which behavior you want before choosing a method.
Choose between displaying a fallback and changing saved featured images
A display-time fallback supplies an image when a theme or plugin requests a post thumbnail and no suitable image is set. It leaves the post’s saved featured-image assignment alone, so removing or changing the rule can restore the previous display behavior. A write-to-post workflow assigns an image to posts themselves; that changes their saved featured-image values and can overwrite editorial choices.

Also check which posts the rule affects. Some plugin instructions describe rules for future posts, while other tools update existing posts in a category. A fallback only helps in places where the theme or plugin requests a featured image; it does not necessarily add an image to every layout or repair every existing post.

Set category rules without code
Use Quick Featured Images for taxonomy rules
Quick Featured Images describes a rule-building flow: choose an image, select the Category taxonomy and a category value, then save the rule. Its listing also describes custom taxonomies and future-post use cases. The exact interface can vary by installed version, so use the plugin’s current settings rather than relying on a menu path that may have changed.

Before applying a rule, determine whether it is meant to affect new posts only or also existing posts. Then check a post that has no featured image and one that already has an editor-selected image. This reveals whether the outcome preserves editorial selections and whether the rule reaches the posts and layouts you intend.
Use a per-category and global fallback
Freundschaft Default Featured Images documents a category-specific fallback with a global fallback for posts that match no category rule. It resolves priority using numeric values: a higher priority number wins, and if priorities tie, the lower term ID wins. This matters when a post belongs to multiple categories; set priorities intentionally rather than assuming the most specific or last category will win.

Use a category image that writes to posts only if that is intended
Category Featured Image follows a materially different workflow: it can set the category’s image as the featured image for posts in that category. Its listing warns that updating the category image can change featured images across those posts. It also warns that clicking Update with no image selected removes the featured image for every post in the category.
Before using this write-to-post approach, back up the site and test with a small set of posts or on staging. Check how the tool handles posts with manually selected images and posts assigned to more than one category. The plugin documents parent-category precedence when multiple categories apply, so confirm that this matches the site’s editorial rules.

Choose category precedence before configuring any method
A post can have multiple categories, so a category fallback needs a clear winner. Documented approaches differ: Category Featured Image gives parent categories precedence, Freundschaft Default Featured Images uses numeric priorities with lower term ID breaking a tie, and the Default Featured Image filter example evaluates conditions in code order. Do not leave this behavior implicit if posts can match more than one rule.

The Default Featured Image plugin provides the dfi_thumbnail_id filter. Its callback receives the current default image ID and the post ID. A callback can inspect the post’s category and return the attachment ID for that category; when nothing matches, it should return the existing filter value. This is a plugin filter, not a WordPress core hook.

The example checks the built-in category taxonomy; custom taxonomies or custom post types require logic appropriate to those terms and post types. If several categories can match, the first matching condition in the callback wins, so order the checks to express the desired precedence.

Check the result before relying on it
- Confirm whether the method is display-only or changes saved featured-image assignments.
- Check whether existing posts, new posts, or both are covered.
- Test a post with no featured image, one with a manually chosen image, and one assigned to multiple categories.
- Verify the fallback in each relevant theme location, such as an archive card and an individual post, because image requests depend on the theme or plugin.
- If using a tool that writes assignments, back up the site and test a small group before applying it broadly.
- If the site uses custom post types or taxonomies, confirm support in the plugin version and plan you have installed.
