Choose which setting you need
“Default” can refer to the card used for tap-to-pay transactions or the payment app Android uses for contactless payments. These settings have different scopes and live in different places.

Set or check the default card in Google Wallet
- Open the Google Wallet app.
- Swipe across the cards at the top until the card you want is visible.
- Tap the card, then tap Details > Make default for tap to pay.
The first payment method added to Wallet is initially the default, but you can change it later. At a supported contactless terminal, Wallet uses the default when you tap without first choosing another card. Google’s instructions are in Change your default payment method in the Google Wallet app.

What must be in place for phone tap to pay
Changing defaults does not make an unsupported card or phone eligible. Google lists these requirements for phone tap to pay:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- NFC is turned on.
- Google Wallet is selected as the phone’s default NFC wallet app.
- You have a screen lock, and the device meets Google’s security requirements.
- The payment method is supported for Wallet in your country and is set up for contactless payments.
A physical card’s contactless feature alone does not guarantee that the card can be used in Google Wallet. Compatibility depends on the card and its issuing bank. Check Google’s guidance on tapping to pay with your phone and adding a debit or credit card to Google Wallet.
