How to Fix Windows Features Changes That Won’t Apply

Use DISM or PowerShell to check the feature state, restart if servicing is pending, and verify that Windows can access a compatible repair source.

If a Windows optional feature change will not complete, first check its actual servicing state. A feature marked EnablePending or DisablePending needs a restart; if Windows cannot find the required files, the repair source or its compatibility may be the problem. On a work- or school-managed PC, policy can also hide feature controls or restrict where Windows gets those files.

Check the feature’s actual state

Settings may show a friendly feature name, while servicing commands require the feature identifier used by your Windows image. Open PowerShell as an administrator if the operation requires elevated rights, then query the feature in the running installation:

Get-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName <FeatureName>

Replace <FeatureName> with the actual identifier; do not type the angle brackets. Microsoft documents this cmdlet for inspecting a named optional feature in an online Windows image: Get-WindowsOptionalFeature.

To find identifiers or inspect details with DISM, use an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell:

Dism /Online /Get-Features
Dism /Online /Get-FeatureInfo /FeatureName:<FeatureName>

/Online targets the Windows installation currently running. Commands that target a mounted offline image are for servicing that image, not the active PC.

If the feature change is pending, restart Windows

If the reported state is EnablePending or DisablePending, the change is not necessarily a failed operation. Microsoft’s DISM guidance says Windows must boot to complete either pending state. Restart the computer, then run the state query again to confirm whether the feature is enabled or disabled: Enable or Disable Windows Features Using DISM.

If you are enabling a feature, include its dependencies

Once you have confirmed the correct feature identifier, Microsoft’s PowerShell example for an online image is:

Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName <FeatureName> -All

-All enables required parent features and their default dependencies. The DISM equivalent is /Enable-Feature with /All. These commands target the running Windows installation; check the feature name before running them. See Microsoft’s Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature reference.

If Windows cannot find the files required to install a feature

Windows may need component files that are not available locally. Microsoft describes a repair source as “a location that’s used to restore Windows optional features, enable Windows optional features, or repair a corrupted Windows image.” Depending on configuration and policy, the source can be Windows Update, a mounted Windows image, another running Windows installation shared over a network, an SxS folder on a share or installation media, or a WIM file with the appropriate image index. See Configure a Windows Repair Source.

Choose a source that is available and compatible

  • Availability: Windows Update can be the default repair source when policy permits it. If it is unavailable or disallowed, an approved local or network source may be needed.
  • Compatibility: The source must contain the needed Windows content. Microsoft advises using RTM media and ensuring the source is patched to the latest cumulative update. A source older than the target installation may lack updated files needed to add a feature or repair Windows.
  • WIM image: Use the image index that contains the required content; an arbitrary index or any Windows ISO is not guaranteed to work.
  • Device control: If Group Policy or mobile-device management configures an approved source, use that source rather than substituting another one.

Use a local source deliberately

If you have a suitable local source, specify its path. For example:

Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName <FeatureName> -Source <SourcePath> -LimitAccess

Replace <SourcePath> with the actual source location. Include -LimitAccess only when you intend to prevent the command from contacting Windows Update. If Windows Update is the intended source, omit that option. A USB drive can carry suitable Windows installation media, but the drive itself is not a repair source; its contents must match the target installation appropriately.

If feature controls are missing on a work or school PC

Group Policy or an MDM provider can hide the optional-features interface and can define alternate sources for optional component installation and repair. Microsoft notes that the documented policy for hiding the interface does not itself disable individual features; a feature may still be controlled through PowerShell. However, policy can separately affect where Windows obtains component files. Ask your organization’s IT administrator to check the applicable settings rather than overriding managed configuration. See Microsoft’s Settings policy configuration service provider documentation.

Verify the result and preserve the error details

After restarting or attempting feature servicing, query the feature state again with Get-WindowsOptionalFeature or DISM. If it still has not reached the intended state, record the exact DISM error code and message along with the feature identifier and whether the PC is managed. Those details distinguish a pending operation from a missing or inaccessible source; the feature name alone does not identify the cause.
