Before buying a classic RPG on PlayStation, confirm the exact edition and console, then check what changed, which games a bundle contains, and whether any bonus has specific save-data requirements. A PS4 game may work on PS5, but compatibility and features can depend on whether you use a disc or digital copy and on the listing’s caveats.
1. Identify the exact release
Start with the product page, not just the game’s familiar name. A port, remaster, remake, and collection can refer to different releases with different content and features. For example, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is presented as a remake, distinct from earlier releases of those games.

- Confirm the full title and edition shown on the PlayStation Store.
- Check whether the product is a single game, a collection, or a remake rather than assuming from the series name.
- If several editions appear, open each listing and compare its stated contents.
2. Check PS4 or PS5 compatibility
Look at the platform label and match it to your console. PlayStation says compatible PS4 digital games can be played on PS5; playing a PS4 disc requires a PS5 with a disc drive. See PlayStation’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance.

Compatibility does not necessarily mean every feature is identical. The Final Fantasy I–VI Bundle listing, for example, notes that the PS4 game is playable on PS5 but may lack some PS4 features. Read the notice on the specific product page before purchase.

3. Decide whether the changes suit you
Classic RPG releases can vary in presentation and play features. Check the official description for graphics, audio, font choices, added material, and quality-of-life options rather than assuming a port reproduces the original unchanged.
Audio and font options
Square Enix says the PS4 versions of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters let players choose between rearranged and original-based soundtracks, and between the default and pixel fonts. Do not infer bundle contents from its name alone. Square Enix says the six Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster games are available individually or together in a bundle. PlayStation’s Final Fantasy I–VI Bundle page describes a package containing all six games. Compare the individual product pages with the collection before checkout, especially if you want only one or a subset.

Dragon Quest I & II also appears alongside a separate Erdrick Trilogy collection edition on the Store. The collection name alone does not establish exactly what your selected edition includes, so verify the current listing’s contents. Store editions and availability can vary by region.
5. Check save-data bonuses and account conditions
A bonus tied to prior save data may require a particular release, not merely another game with a similar title. The Dragon Quest I & II listing specifies that its in-game bonus requires save data for Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake (2024), not Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation (2019), and that the save data must be tied to the same PlayStation account. Confirm those conditions on the product listing if the bonus matters to you.

6. Verify the local Store listing before checkout
Store information is region-specific, and prices and availability are not established universally. Open the listing for your account’s region and check the current price, release date, supported languages, age rating, and any account or online requirements.
