How to Send a 24/7 Video Playlist to YouTube Live from Docker

Run a continuous YouTube Live playlist from Docker with FFmpeg, current channel ingest settings, a protected stream key, and tested recovery behavior.

To send a 24/7 playlist to YouTube Live from Docker, run FFmpeg in a long-lived container, make the video files available inside it, and publish the resulting feed to the current ingest address and stream key for your YouTube stream. YouTube treats that incoming feed and the viewer-facing live broadcast as separate resources, so you must configure and monitor both.

This guide covers the Docker and FFmpeg workflow, protocol choice, secret handling, verification, and common failure points. The exact FFmpeg inputs depend on your media; there is no single playlist command that safely fits every mix of codecs, frame rates, audio layouts, and timestamps.

How the Docker-to-YouTube setup fits together

The host runs Docker; a container runs FFmpeg; a mounted directory supplies the media; and FFmpeg turns the playlist into a continuous audio/video feed for YouTube. YouTube calls that incoming feed a liveStream. The public video viewers watch is a separate liveBroadcast. A stream key identifies the feed connection, not the public watch page. YouTube’s guide to broadcasts and streams describes these as distinct resources and documents a 24/7 broadcast workflow.

Keep the responsibilities separate: FFmpeg must continue producing and sending media, while the YouTube broadcast must be in the intended live state. Restarting a container addresses only the first process’s container lifecycle; it does not prove that YouTube’s broadcast state or playback continuity is restored.

1. Prepare the YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. Check that live streaming is available on the channel. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and choose or set up the stream you intend to use. Eligibility and account-specific settings can affect availability; use the channel’s current Studio interface rather than assuming a key or endpoint from another setup will work.
  2. Copy the current ingest settings for that stream. Obtain its primary ingest address and stream name/key, and the backup address if your deployment will use it. The LiveStreams API reference describes the ingestion address and stream name fields. Do not hard-code an assumed hostname: YouTube supplies settings for the particular stream and protocol.
  3. Keep the key out of public files and image layers. Treat it like a password. Supply it at runtime using an appropriate secret or environment mechanism for your deployment; avoid committing it in Compose files, baking it into a container image, or printing it in routine logs. These are operational precautions, not a claim that YouTube requires one specific Docker secret mechanism.

2. Make the playlist accessible to FFmpeg

Store the media on the Docker host and mount its directory into the container at a stable path. A read-only mount is preferable when FFmpeg only needs to read the files. Then configure FFmpeg to consume a playlist or the appropriate set of inputs and produce a continuous output.

Choose the input method based on the actual files and how they should transition. A playlist whose items differ in resolution, codec, frame rate, audio channel layout, or timestamps may not concatenate cleanly with stream-copy alone; it may need normalization or encoding. Audio and video also need to advance together without gaps or timestamp jumps. The public community setup example illustrates a pattern using looped local media inputs, but it is not an official universal command. Verify your chosen FFmpeg build, input options, and playlist against every format you will use before relying on it unattended.

3. Choose an ingest protocol and configure FFmpeg

For a conventional FFmpeg-to-YouTube workflow, RTMPS is a practical default when the encoder build and channel settings support it. YouTube describes RTMPS as encrypted and suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. RTMP is also supported but is not encrypted in YouTube’s protocol comparison. Use the endpoint and stream key/name supplied for the selected protocol in Live Control Room or by the API; do not copy a generic endpoint into production. YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison details protocol differences.

HLS can suit workflows that need its additional codec or HDR possibilities, but it is not a drop-in equivalent to continuous RTMP-style delivery. YouTube’s setup instructions require HTTPS, TS segments, a rolling media playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and segment durations of 1–4 seconds. Segment delivery adds latency, and your encoder must support the required configuration. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.

There is no reliable, media-independent FFmpeg command to paste here: the correct input, looping, timestamp, audio/video mapping, encoding, and output options depend on your files and FFmpeg build. Configure those options for your tested media, then direct the output to the current protocol-specific YouTube ingest address with the matching key. Keep credentials out of command histories and logs where possible.

4. Run FFmpeg in a long-lived Docker container

  1. Choose and pin an FFmpeg image or build. Use an image that includes the codecs and protocol support your media and chosen ingest method require. Pin a known image version rather than relying on an unspecified moving tag.
  2. Mount the media and provide runtime configuration. Make the playlist files readable at the container paths FFmpeg expects, and pass the ingest details without embedding the stream key in the image or a checked-in configuration file.
  3. Set a restart policy appropriate to the host. Docker restart policies can start a container again after it exits; Docker documents the behavior in Start containers automatically. Choose a policy based on whether the container should return after process failure or host restart, and confirm the behavior on your deployment.
  4. Monitor the process and YouTube separately. A restart policy does not guarantee FFmpeg reconnects seamlessly, resumes at the intended playlist position, or leaves the broadcast live. Test each behavior rather than inferring it from the container restarting.

5. Test the full playlist before leaving it unattended

  1. Start with a private, unlisted, or otherwise suitable test broadcast if that option is available to your channel.
  2. Check YouTube’s incoming stream health and configuration messages in Live Control Room. The API exposes stream health and status information; examples of issues include low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and a missing audio stream. See the LiveStreams API reference.
  3. Watch and listen to the actual output. Confirm that video is visible, audio is present, and playlist transitions do not introduce silence, freezes, abrupt timestamp changes, or unintended gaps.
  4. Let the playlist complete a full cycle. Then force an FFmpeg process or container restart and verify whether playback restarts or resumes as intended, whether FFmpeg reconnects, and whether the YouTube broadcast remains in the desired state.
  5. Review container logs for FFmpeg exits and network errors, while ensuring the stream key is not exposed. Keep a record of the tested restart and recovery behavior so the operational expectation is clear.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube does not receive a feed: Confirm the stream is active in Studio, and that the protocol, current ingest address, stream key/name, and channel settings all match. Recheck that the key was passed into the running container rather than only placed in a host-side file that the container cannot read.
  • The feed connects but YouTube reports a health issue: Read the specific Live Control Room or API health message. Check the outgoing bitrate, frame rate, and whether an audio stream is actually present; do not assume a successful network connection means a valid media feed.
  • One playlist item works but a later transition fails: Compare the files’ codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio layout, and timestamps. A mixed playlist may require normalization or encoding rather than stream-copying unchanged inputs.
  • The container restarts but the stream does not recover as expected: A Docker policy restarts an exited container, but FFmpeg reconnect and YouTube broadcast behavior are separate. Reproduce the failure deliberately and test the complete recovery path, including where the playlist resumes.
  • The stream key appears in logs or source control: Treat it as exposed. Remove it from the affected location, replace or reset the key using the current YouTube controls as appropriate, then update the runtime secret and verify the new connection.

Costs and operational trade-offs

A Docker setup requires a host that stays available, enough storage for the media, and a reliable network connection. If you use a VPS or spare computer, compare its recurring cost, power and network reliability, storage access, and maintenance burden against keeping Docker on equipment you already own. No particular host or provider is necessary for the workflow, and Docker alone does not supply the machine, bandwidth, or monitoring.
