If a single video stops at the end in OBS, select its Media Source, open Properties, and turn on Loop. For a playlist, use a VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist. These controls govern playback inside OBS; first check the OBS preview to see whether the clip actually stops there.
Choose the setting that matches what you want
| What should happen? | Source and setting | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| One video should play again when it reaches the end | Media Source → Loop | Replays the file after playback completes. |
| A video should start over when its source becomes visible | Media Source → Restart playback when source becomes active | Restarts the file when the source is in the current scene and visible. It does not, by itself, make the file loop at its end. |
| A playlist should start over after its media files finish | VLC Video Source → Loop Playlist | Restarts the playlist when it runs out of media files. |
The names are similar, but the behaviors are distinct. OBS documents the settings in its Media Sources guide.

Fix a single video that stops at the end
- In OBS, select the scene containing the video source.
- Select the video’s Media Source in the Sources list, then open its Properties.
- Confirm that the source points to the intended local media file.
- Check Loop and apply the change. OBS documents Loop as off by default, so verify the checkbox rather than assuming its current state.
- Test the source in the OBS preview and let the clip reach its end. It should begin playing again.
If you meant “restart when shown”
Turn on Restart playback when source becomes active in the Media Source properties if the file should begin from the start when the source becomes active. OBS defines active here as being in the current scene and visible. This is useful when switching scenes or showing and hiding a source; it is not a substitute for Loop if the video must repeat continuously at its end.
Make a playlist repeat
- Install VLC so OBS can make the VLC Video Source available. OBS specifies 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.
- Add or select a VLC Video Source and open its properties to configure the playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist, then test playback through the end of the list. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default, but check its actual setting.
Use a Media Source for a single local file; choose VLC Video Source when you need a playlist or its extended media support.

Settings that do not make a video repeat
- Show nothing when playback ends controls what appears after completion. It does not turn on looping.
- Close file when inactive affects resource use while a source is inactive; it is not the end-of-file repeat control.
- Restart playback when source becomes active restarts on activation and visibility, not automatically at every end of the file.
Find out whether the problem is in OBS or the broadcast
- Watch the OBS preview as the clip reaches its end.
- If the clip stops in the preview, check the source type and the relevant Loop or Loop Playlist property first.
- If the preview continues correctly but the YouTube broadcast does not show the expected playback, the settings above do not establish a YouTube-side cause. Investigate the stream and output path separately rather than changing encoder settings without evidence.
This is a diagnostic boundary: OBS’s media settings describe source playback, while its source API describes media lifecycle behavior. Those references do not identify the cause of a particular mismatch between the OBS preview and a YouTube broadcast. See the OBS Media Sources guide and OBS Source API Reference.
One narrow hide-and-show edge case
An OBS issue opened on July 29, 2024, reports that hiding and showing a source immediately after playback ends may fail to take effect if the graphics thread does not process the visibility change in that interval. Consider this only if the timing matches your problem; it is not a general explanation for videos that stop. See OBS Studio issue #11040.
