How to Sell Ads on Your WordPress Blog: A Step-by-Step Guide

A practical guide to choosing an ad model, getting AdSense approved, selling placements directly, and checking your WordPress ad setup.

You can monetize a WordPress blog through an ad network such as Google AdSense or by selling placements directly to advertisers. AdSense handles advertiser matching after your site passes review; direct sales give you more control but require you to find buyers and manage each campaign. First identify whether your site is self-hosted WordPress or WordPress.com, then choose a route and follow its setup and checks.

1. Check which WordPress you use

WordPress.org software is installed on a web host; WordPress.com is a hosted service. That difference affects access to site code, themes, plugins, and files. Google requires access to site HTML or a supported integration method for AdSense and advises users of hosted sites to check their host’s terms. WordPress.com permissions can vary by plan, so verify the current rules for your plan before relying on a plugin or third-party ad code. WordPress.org explains the difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com; Google describes ways to insert AdSense code in WordPress.

2. Choose an ad-selling model

Consideration Automated network ads Direct-sold placements
Who finds advertisers? The ad network matches ads through its system; the publisher applies and completes onboarding. You identify and approach advertisers or agencies, then agree on a campaign.
Approval AdSense reviews site ownership and policy compliance. Ads can serve only after the site is marked Ready. You and the advertiser agree on terms; no AdSense site approval is part of the direct sale.
Control Less control over which ads are matched; you still choose placements and must follow network policies. You negotiate placement, creative, schedule, and reporting directly, subject to your site’s standards.
Work after setup Maintain the site, code, policy compliance, and account checks. Find buyers, agree terms, review creative and destination, publish, and track delivery.

Neither route guarantees income. Actual network revenue depends on traffic and ad delivery; this guide has no reliable comparable earnings benchmark. A WordPress ad-management plugin can help place or schedule units, but it does not find buyers or guarantee sales.

3. Set up Google AdSense

Before you apply

  • Make sure the site is live, publicly reachable, and under your control.
  • Publish substantial, useful content and provide a clear reader experience. Google lists insufficient unique content or user experience, unreachable sites, incomplete ad code, and policy violations among possible readiness problems.
  • Confirm that your WordPress setup lets you add the required code or use an integration method permitted by your host.

Apply and verify ownership

  1. In AdSense, add your site and follow the account’s ownership-verification steps. Google may check ownership using ad code, an ads.txt file, or a meta tag.
  2. Complete the review tasks shown in the account and wait until the site status is Ready. Google states: “You can only serve ads on a site after it has passed our review and has a “Ready” status in AdSense.” Its published guidance says reviews usually take a few days, but some cases take 2–4 weeks; this is an estimate, not a service-level guarantee. See AdSense site management and Google’s site-readiness guidance.
  3. Insert the ad code with an appropriate plugin, theme, widget, or documented code placement. Google cautions that it is not responsible for actions of non-Google plugins, so check current support and compatibility rather than treating a plugin listing as an endorsement. Google’s WordPress code-insertion guidance covers integration options.

Place ads without misleading readers

Use clear locations and labels. Google permits “Advertisements” or “Sponsored Links” for Google ads, but prohibits prompting people to click or arranging ads to encourage accidental clicks. Do not disguise ads as ordinary navigation or editorial links. Review Google’s ad placement policies before publishing.

4. Sell placements directly

Define what you are offering

Specify inventory in concrete terms, such as a banner in a named site location, a sponsorship mention, or a campaign running for an agreed period. Prepare a concise media sheet with the audience description, placement location and dimensions, available dates, substantiated audience information, creative requirements, and a contact address. Do not promise audience reach or performance you cannot support.

Find buyers and agree on the campaign

  1. Make a list of brands or agencies whose products or services fit your readership.
  2. Contact them with the placement details and available dates. Explain what evidence you can provide about the audience and what reporting you can deliver.
  3. Put the agreed placement, timing, payment terms, creative specifications, and reporting expectations in writing before publication. There is no established standard price or conversion rate here; negotiate based on your audience, inventory, and the advertiser’s requirements.
  4. Review the ad creative and its destination, label sponsorship clearly, then publish and track whether the agreed placement ran as scheduled.

Use an ad manager if useful

A plugin can help create, insert, schedule, rotate, or target ad units. For example, the Advanced Ads plugin listing describes ad creation, scheduling, targeting, and insertion from networks and affiliate programs. The Inpweb Ad Spaces listing describes managing direct banner ads. These are publisher-maintained feature descriptions, not proof of buyer demand or guaranteed results. Check current compatibility, support, features, and pricing before installing any plugin.

5. Check ads.txt and account status

For programmatic advertising, ads.txt is a text file at your domain’s root that lists authorized exchanges or supply-side platforms and seller identifiers. Use the values associated with your own account; an incorrect publisher ID can mean no auction for an ad request. Make sure the file is crawlable and confirm that the resulting file contains the right entries. A plugin may help create it, but you remain responsible for checking its contents.

Google says ads.txt changes may take a few days to appear in AdSense and can take up to a month on sites with few ad requests. Check the file’s status in your AdSense account and investigate any policy or site notices. See Google’s ads.txt FAQ and its guidance on making ads.txt crawlable.
