Storefront is the official free baseline; Astra suits shoppers who want broad page-builder compatibility; Blocksy pairs WooCommerce support with the block editor; and Kadence offers visual header and footer controls. These are workflow-based recommendations, not speed or sales rankings: the available sources do not establish a comparable performance or conversion winner.

Free themes to shortlist
Storefront: official WooCommerce starting point
WooCommerce describes Storefront as its official theme and says it is free to use. Its setup documentation covers prompts to install and activate WooCommerce if needed, followed by a Storefront setup prompt and a Customizer guided tour. That makes it a sensible baseline if you want a theme with official WooCommerce provenance and a straightforward setup path. Official status is not evidence that Storefront has the richest design toolkit or outperforms other themes.
The WordPress.org listing identifies Automattic as publisher and reports version 4.6.2, last updated December 9, 2025, with 90,000+ active installations. Treat that count as a listing snapshot, not as a count of active stores.
#1 Best Overall
Astra: multipurpose flexibility and builder compatibility
Astra is a broad WordPress theme with WooCommerce compatibility, store-focused features and templates, and stated compatibility with Spectra, Elementor, and Beaver Builder. Consider it if you want to build beyond a shop or already prefer one of those page-building tools. The free theme and its commercial upgrades are distinct: do not assume every store-specific enhancement is included without checking the current plan.
WordPress.org listed Astra version 4.14.0, last updated September 24, 2026, with 1+ million active installations as of the listing snapshot accessed October 4, 2026. The number indicates installations reported by the directory, not market share or store quality.
Rank #2
Blocksy: block editor support with WooCommerce features
Blocksy is a candidate if you want to work with the WordPress block editor while using a theme whose listing describes advanced WooCommerce support. The directory also lists block editor patterns and styles, grid layout, and other general theme options. It has paid upgrades or support, so check which features are included in the version you plan to use.
WordPress.org listed Blocksy version 2.1.58, last updated October 2, 2026, with 300,000+ active installations as of the listing snapshot accessed October 4, 2026. The listing calls Blocksy “fast,” but that is publisher language, not an independent, controlled speed result.
Rank #3
Kadence: visual header and footer workflow
Kadence may suit you if you want drag-and-drop controls for the header and footer, starter templates, and global font and color settings. Its WordPress.org listing also describes third-party integrations for ecommerce and other site types. Paid commercial upgrades or support are available; assess them against specific features you need rather than assuming you need a paid tier to launch.
WordPress.org listed Kadence version 1.5.2, last updated July 24, 2026, with 500,000+ active installations as of the listing snapshot accessed October 4, 2026. The listing describes it as “lightweight” and “fast loading”; those are vendor-provided descriptions, not independent measurements.
Rank #4
When a paid WooCommerce theme is worth investigating
A paid theme may be worth comparing when its included design tools or shop-specific controls address a concrete requirement. A secondary comparison updated September 14, 2026 describes these options:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Flatsome: includes UX Builder, according to the comparison.
- WoodMart: is described as bundling numerous store features and demos.
- Shoptimizer: is described as including opinionated product-page and checkout elements.
- Paid Kadence plans: the comparison says some tiers add WooCommerce Shop Kit functionality, including cart and checkout options, swatches, galleries, upsells, order bumps, bundles, and volume pricing.
These are secondary-source descriptions, not a substitute for checking a vendor’s current feature list. Before purchase, confirm the exact tier, current price, update status, renewal terms, number of licensed sites, and which features remain available if you stop renewing. The comparison also covers Divi, but the available evidence does not establish a specific WooCommerce reason to prefer it over the other options here.
Best Value
A theme does not by itself provide a complete, payment-ready store. WooCommerce and the appropriate payment gateway or extensions supply commerce functionality; confirm which parts of your planned setup are theme features and which require separate configuration or add-ons.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose for your store
- Choose your editing workflow. If you want the official free WooCommerce theme, start with Storefront. For a block-editor workflow, compare Blocksy. For broad page-builder compatibility, look at Astra. For visual header and footer controls, consider Kadence.
- List the store features you actually need. Check product layouts, filters, swatches, galleries, and cart or checkout controls. For each, establish whether the theme includes it, WooCommerce supplies it, or you need a separate extension or paid tier.
- Compare the full cost and license. A free theme may cover your starting needs; a paid upgrade is useful only if its specific features justify the cost. Check renewals and site limits directly with the vendor rather than relying on an older price summary.
- Check maintenance and compatibility before installing. Review the theme’s current WordPress.org version and last update, its WooCommerce compatibility statement, and its support path. Directory details are snapshots and can change.
- Preview the real workflow. Use a demo or install candidate themes on a staging site with your intended products and editing tools. A feature list cannot establish whether the layout controls fit your day-to-day work.
- Test performance only on a like-for-like setup. To compare speed, use equivalent pages, hosting, plugins, products, and configuration. The available sources do not establish a controlled benchmark across these themes, so they cannot support a speed ranking.
What the available comparisons can—and cannot—tell you
WordPress.org version and update details can help you check maintenance at a point in time; active-installation figures can show the scale of directory adoption. Neither tells you how a theme will perform on your store. Likewise, feature lists show advertised capabilities, not whether a particular design will improve sales. No comparable independent dataset establishes that any theme here is faster or converts better than the others.
