Is RSS Dead? How RSS Feeds Still Help Monitor Websites

No—RSS is still useful for monitoring websites that publish a feed. It gives a reader or monitoring service a structured stream of new posts, releases, advisories, and notices. What has changed is its visibility: RSS is not every publisher’s main way to reach readers, feeds can be hard to find, and sites without feeds need another monitoring method. There is no representative current count here that establishes whether RSS use is rising or falling.

What RSS does—and what it does not do

RSS and Atom are formats websites can use to publish lists of new entries. A feed reader checks a feed URL and displays its items alongside updates from other sources. You do not need to open the XML yourself, and a site does not need to show an orange RSS icon for a feed to exist.

A feed is useful when you want to follow a source rather than repeatedly visit its website. Depending on what the publisher includes, an item may contain a title, link, publication date, summary, or more of the article. Feeds do not guarantee that every site publishes one, that every update appears in it, or that an item arrives immediately.

Where RSS is still useful for monitoring

Feeds work well for source-first monitoring: follow a publisher’s updates in one place, then decide what needs attention. Examples include:

  • Internet connectivity
  • Displaying RSS feed
  • Software releases: Track release notes or project announcements without checking each project site manually.
  • Security advisories: Collect notices from vendors or organizations that publish them in feeds.
  • Government and regulatory notices: Follow new publications from agencies that provide feeds.
  • Company and competitor posts: Watch selected blogs, product updates, or newsroom entries.
  • News and specialist sources: Combine chosen publications by subject instead of relying on a single homepage or social feed.

These are practical use cases, not proof that all relevant organizations maintain feeds. PageCrawl’s vendor-authored guide describes RSS monitoring and these kinds of sources, but it is not an independent comparison of monitoring products: PageCrawl’s RSS monitoring guide.

How to start following feeds

  1. Choose a feed reader if you want a consolidated reading list. Feedly and Inoreader document ways to follow feeds; their interfaces and plans may change. Feedly’s follow-a-feed instructions were last updated November 4, 2024. Inoreader’s explanation describes how its service retrieves followed feeds.
  2. Search for the source. Try the website name in the reader’s search. If you already know the feed URL, paste it into the reader.
  3. Check likely feed locations. Feedly suggests trying common paths such as /feed or /rss, or inspecting the page source for links ending in .rss, .xml, or .atom. These conventions are clues, not a guarantee that a feed exists. See Feedly’s instructions.
  4. Organize feeds around a real task. Group sources by topic or priority, then remove feeds that are inactive or generate too much noise. For a team, choose a feed-monitoring or automation service if items need to be routed to email, chat, or another workflow.
  5. Tune expectations and alerts. Decide which sources merit notifications and which can wait for a regular reading session. Inoreader says it typically checks an active feed every 30 minutes to a few hours, adapting cadence to activity. That describes Inoreader’s fetcher, not a universal RSS polling interval: Inoreader.

What to do when a website has no feed

First check whether the site has a feed that is simply not linked prominently: search its name in a reader, paste a candidate URL, try common paths, or inspect page source. If no usable feed exists, a page-monitoring service can watch the site’s blog index or another page where new items appear. A sitemap may also help identify published URLs, depending on how the site maintains it.

Page monitoring is a fallback, not an equivalent feed. A monitored page can change for reasons unrelated to a new post, so look for tools that let you target the relevant content area, reduce noise, keep change history, and route alerts. A feed is generally more structured when the publisher maintains one. PageCrawl discusses feed and page monitoring as options, but its recommendations are vendor-authored: guide to RSS feed monitoring.

RSS feeds versus page monitors

Approach Best suited to What to evaluate Main limitation
RSS or Atom reader Following multiple sources that publish feeds Feed discovery, organization, filtering, search, and device support It cannot reliably cover a source that has no feed or omits the change you need.
Website or page monitor Watching a site without a usable feed, or a specific page change not represented in the feed Ability to target content, suppress unrelated changes, preserve history, and route alerts Page changes can be noisy and are less standardized than feed entries.

Use a maintained feed for the updates it carries; add page monitoring only for sources or changes the feed does not cover. The reviewed documentation describes these tool categories but does not independently test or rank individual products.

Why RSS can feel less reliable than it is

Feeds are not always easy to find

A feed may exist without an obvious button. Feed discovery can require searching, trying conventional paths, or checking source markup. For publishers, Crossref recommends both direct, context-sensitive feed links and autodiscovery metadata so readers and software can locate feeds: Crossref’s RSS feed guidance.

Polling is not necessarily instant

A reader has to retrieve a feed before it can show new entries. The timing depends on the reader and source; Inoreader’s stated typical interval for an active feed is 30 minutes to a few hours, with cadence adapting to activity. Do not assume every reader checks at that rate or that an alert will be immediate: Inoreader.

Feed analytics do not equal human readership

Feed requests are difficult to interpret as audience measurements. Aggregators may retrieve a feed on behalf of many subscribers, clients may poll repeatedly, and a request does not show that someone read each item. Crossref cautions that subscriber totals can include duplicate or inactive subscriptions and that reading a feed item may not generate a visit to the publisher’s page: Crossref’s guidance for scholarly publishers. This is useful technical context, not a universal measurement standard.

What RSS’s status looks like in 2026

RSS remains operationally useful, but the available examples do not establish a market-wide revival or collapse, nor a representative current number of users or feeds. Google News is one illustration of the distinction between infrastructure and the reader experience: Google’s Publisher Center help says publishers can still use feeds to create content sections, while feed-provided article text is no longer rendered directly in the app and readers are sent to publisher pages. Google’s documentation does not establish a dated global rollout in the material available: Google News Publisher Center help.

If the task is to capture a monitored page as an image or PDF rather than collect its updates in a feed, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF. For example, using its documented API parameters:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses report the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan: 1,000 screenshots a month, no card required.
