They sign in as your Telegram user account over MTProto, then use that account’s access to backfill earlier messages and monitor new ones. A reliable deployment needs persistent storage for media, SQLite or other state, logs, and the login session, plus a second copy if the archive matters.

What “Telegram backup bot” means in this setup
The word bot is misleading here. The documented whole-channel archiver uses Telegram’s client API (MTProto) and authenticates with the channel owner’s or administrator’s user account. Telegram describes its API as a way to build customized clients, and its channel methods include retrieving messages. This is fundamentally different from creating a conventional Bot API token.

A regular Bot API bot should not be assumed to retrieve a channel’s complete historical archive. Its access depends on being added to the channel or group and on the permissions available to that bot. The user-account client described here can perform a history backfill only for channels that the signed-in account can actually read.

- History backfill: download accessible earlier messages and their supported media.
- Realtime monitoring: watch for new posts and download them as they arrive.
Neither mode bypasses Telegram permissions, deleted content, private-channel access controls, or restrictions on the account. Treat the archive as a copy of what that account can see, not as an independent export of Telegram’s entire infrastructure.
Choose the architecture before installing anything

Do not compare the projects by download speed or VPS size: the available documentation does not provide a controlled performance test. Select the simpler downloader when an organized folder tree and a lightweight progress database are enough; select the dashboard project when you need an operator interface for backfill and ongoing monitoring.

A Linux VPS with durable storage
Use a Linux VPS with enough disk capacity for the channel’s actual media volume and your retention policy. No defensible universal RAM, CPU, disk or monthly-cost recommendation is established for these projects. Video-heavy channels can consume storage far faster than text-only channels, so estimate from the channel’s posting history and leave headroom for temporary files, logs and a second copy.
The VPS must provide storage that survives container recreation and upgrades. A container’s writable layer is not an archive. Plan host-mounted directories or named volumes for configuration, session data, download files, application state and logs.
Telegram API credentials
The Docker quick start requires a Telegram API ID and API hash. Obtain them through Telegram’s official developer account flow and store them as secrets. They are separate from a Bot API token.
The account’s login session
The dashboard flow asks for the account’s phone number and a Telegram login code, then may ask for the account’s two-factor-authentication password. After a successful login, the application keeps a session file so subsequent restarts do not require a new interactive login. Protect that file as carefully as the API hash: possession of a valid session can grant the application the account access it represents.

You need SSH access to install Docker or the native binary, create directories, inspect logs and copy data off the VPS. Use an unprivileged service account where practical, with narrowly scoped sudo access for maintenance.

Prepare the VPS and persistent directories
- Patch the host. Apply current Linux security updates, create an administrator account, disable password SSH authentication in favor of keys, and enable a host firewall. Allow SSH only from addresses you control; allow the dashboard only through a private network, SSH tunnel or authenticated reverse proxy.
- Install Docker Engine and the Docker Compose plugin using your distribution’s current official instructions. Confirm both commands before deploying:

docker compose version- Create a clearly named project directory and data directory. Keep the Compose file and host data separate so an application update cannot accidentally remove the archive.

cd /srv/telegram-archiveThe exact subdirectories depend on the selected release. Before starting the service, identify where its Compose file maps configuration, session, state, channel files and logs. The second reviewed project explicitly requires a host-mounted session file; omitting that mount forces a new interactive login after a restart and can leave progress or access state inconsistent.
Deploy the documented Docker Compose release
1. Select and pin a release
Retrieve the Compose file from the project release you intend to run. Do not blindly use an unpinned latest image: record a specific version or image tag in the Compose file so that a later pull cannot silently change application behavior. The project’s image tags and syntax can change, so verify the selected release’s README immediately before installation.
2. Review mounts and permissions
Open the Compose file and check every volume mapping. At minimum, archive media, application state, the Telegram session and logs must resolve to host storage under your project directory or to a separately mounted disk. Confirm the container user can write those directories without making the whole filesystem world-writable.
3. Pull and start the stack
cd /srv/telegram-archive
docker compose pull
docker compose up -dCheck the service list and startup output:

docker compose logs --tail=200Do not proceed to a large backfill until the container remains healthy after a stop and start. Test that the mounted directories still contain the session and state files after:
docker compose restart4. Set the dashboard password
Open the dashboard through a protected path, set its password and restrict access. Never expose an administration interface directly to the public internet when an SSH tunnel, VPN or authenticated proxy is available. Keep the password out of shell history and shared notes.
5. Enter Telegram API credentials
In the project’s documented settings screen, enter the API ID and API hash. Store them in the application’s secret mechanism or a permissions-restricted environment file rather than committing them to source control.
6. Add the Telegram account
Use the dashboard’s account flow to enter the phone number, submit the login code Telegram sends, and provide the optional 2FA password when prompted. Complete this interactively on a trusted connection. Wait until the application reports a saved session before closing the browser or restarting the container.

7. Select a channel and choose an operating mode
Choose a channel visible to the signed-in account. Start a history backfill for existing posts, enable realtime monitoring for new posts, or do both if the project supports running them together. Begin with a small, recent range if the interface permits it; verify that files and state records are being created before committing to a large historical run.
Understand the files you must preserve
A usable archive consists of more than downloaded media. Preserve each category below:

The dashboard project supports moving its downloads directory to another disk. Use that capability when the VPS boot disk is small, but keep the database and session on equally durable storage and include all of them in backup jobs.
Run a safe backfill and ongoing monitor
Verify access first
Confirm that the account can open the channel in Telegram itself. A failed download is often an access problem rather than a Docker problem: private channels, removed memberships, deleted posts and restricted media cannot be recovered by changing a container setting.

Start conservatively
Watch the first batch through the dashboard and container logs. Check that message text, timestamps and media appear in the expected directories, and that the progress database advances. Large channels can generate sustained disk and network activity; schedule an initial backfill for a period when you can monitor it.
Respect Telegram rate limits
The Telegram Media Downloader documentation says it respects FloodWait limits, but it also warns that heavy automated downloading carries risk. A FloodWait is a server-directed delay, not an error to bypass by launching more workers. Let the application wait, avoid repeatedly deleting state and restarting, and do not run several independent downloaders against the same account unless you understand the resulting load.
The project FAQ states: “No tool can promise zero risk.” That statement concerns account bans and heavy automated downloading; it is not a guarantee from Telegram. Keep the monitoring rate reasonable and accept that account access can change.

Back up the VPS archive to somewhere else
A VPS copy is not automatically an independent backup. A provider outage, deleted instance, failed disk, billing problem or compromised account can remove both the service and its only data. The reviewed project documents local and remote backup destinations, optional encryption and an offline restore command.
Choose a second destination
- Another server or remote storage: useful for automated copies and geographic separation.
- A local workstation or NAS: convenient when you control the receiving machine and its capacity.
- An offline external drive or SSD: useful for a copy disconnected after synchronization. It is optional and is not required to run the archiver.
Copy both the downloaded channel files and the application state that describes them. If you copy only media, you may lose captions, message IDs and the progress record needed for a coherent restore.
Encrypt and test restoration
Use the project’s optional encryption feature when the destination is not fully trusted, and store the decryption key separately from the backup. Perform a test restore to a disposable directory before relying on the process. Restore syntax is release-specific; use the offline restore command documented for the exact version or image tag you deployed rather than assuming a command from another release still applies.
Keep at least one copy unavailable to the VPS account. A scheduled synchronization that can delete the destination immediately is replication, not a protected backup; use retention or versioning where your destination supports it.
Secure the dashboard, API and secrets
- Restrict dashboard access with a firewall, private network, SSH tunnel or authenticated reverse proxy.
- Never publish API ID/hash values, the Telegram session file, dashboard password or remote-storage credentials in a repository, issue tracker or public log.
- Review file ownership and permissions on the project directory; only the service account and trusted administrators should read session and secret files.
- Keep Docker images and the host patched, and read release notes before upgrading.
- Do not expose the simpler downloader’s sample status API publicly. Its sample binds to a network interface without authentication and the README warns that it should be limited to a trusted network.
- Audit who can access the Telegram account itself. Removing channel membership or changing 2FA can invalidate the session and halt monitoring.
These precautions are operational safeguards, not a claim that either project has passed an independent security audit.

Whichever route you choose, the important invariant is the same: session, state, configuration, logs and downloaded files must live outside the replaceable application process.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The container starts, then asks for login again
Check that the session file is mapped to host storage, that the container can write it, and that you did not start a second Compose project with a different volume path. Restore the saved session from backup only through the project’s documented procedure.

Backfill finds no messages
Open the channel with the same Telegram account and verify membership and visibility. Confirm that you selected the correct channel and that the account is not restricted. A Bot API token cannot substitute for the user-account session required by the documented archiver.
Media downloads stop with FloodWait
Allow the requested wait to expire. Do not increase concurrency, repeatedly restart the service or delete the progress database. Review logs after the wait and reduce simultaneous automated activity.
Files exist but progress does not advance
Check write permissions on both the media directory and SQLite/state directory, inspect disk space and inodes, and verify that the state mount points to persistent storage. Restart only after preserving logs and a copy of the state database.
The dashboard is unreachable
Run docker compose ps and docker compose logs --tail=200, then inspect the host firewall and reverse-proxy or SSH-tunnel path. Do not solve an access problem by opening the dashboard or status API to every internet address.
The VPS runs out of disk space
Pause new downloading, identify the largest channel directories and logs, and expand or relocate the downloads volume. Do not delete the state database to reclaim space; rotate logs and remove only files covered by a verified retention and backup policy.

Maintenance checklist
- Confirm the pinned image or binary version and read its release notes before upgrading.
- Check free disk space, inode usage and backup-job results on a schedule.
- Verify that realtime monitoring is still connected and that new test posts appear in the archive when appropriate.
- Copy session, state, configuration, logs and channel files to the secondary destination.
- Perform a periodic restore test and record the exact release and restore command that succeeded.
- Review account membership, 2FA and dashboard access whenever an administrator changes.
What a successful deployment looks like
The final test is not merely a running container. A sound deployment can restart without a new login, continues a backfill from recorded state, stores media and metadata on host-mounted storage, keeps the administration interfaces private, and produces a readable second copy that can be restored without the original VPS. That combination is what turns a downloader into a maintainable channel archive.
