Joomla vs WordPress: Which CMS Should You Choose in 2026?

WordPress is the safer default for most new sites in 2026, while Joomla remains a strong choice for structured content, granular permissions and established Joomla projects.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most new websites in 2026, choose WordPress unless your project specifically benefits from Joomla’s structured administration, granular permissions or an existing Joomla codebase. WordPress offers the larger measured ecosystem and a deeper pool of developers, agencies, themes and plugins. Joomla remains an actively maintained option with a strong administrative model, but it has stricter current server requirements and a smaller market footprint.

The right choice is not a popularity contest. Match the CMS to your content model, editorial workflow, permissions, extension quality, hosting environment, update discipline, accessibility needs and the cost of migrating later.

The short answer: which CMS wins in 2026?

WordPress is the safer default for a new site when you value hiring flexibility, abundant tutorials, broad hosting availability and a familiar publishing experience. Its larger ecosystem can reduce the time needed to find a developer or replace an extension.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Joomla is the better fit when your organization needs explicit permission design, a more structured administrative interface, a complex content hierarchy, or an existing Joomla installation whose extensions and templates already support the business. Moving a mature site merely to follow market share can create more risk than staying put.

WordPress and Joomla in 2026

WordPress: the broad ecosystem choice

WordPress combines a core publishing system with a large marketplace of plugins, themes, block-editor tools and managed services. That breadth makes it possible to assemble anything from a small publication to a membership site or online store without building every feature yourself. It also creates governance work: every plugin and theme becomes part of your security, compatibility and backup plan.

WordPress.org recorded version 7.1.1 on September 17, 2026. The release contained 17 core bug fixes, 21 Block Editor fixes and 11 security fixes. WordPress describes it as a security release and recommends updating immediately. The project states that only the most recent version is actively supported, although fixes were also made available to several older branches in that release. Release details and support policies can change, so verify the current version before deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Joomla: an actively maintained structured CMS

Joomla is not an abandoned legacy system. The project continues to publish current 6.x releases, security notices and bug-fix updates. Joomla documentation normally recommends using the latest version for a new site unless there is a specific reason not to. The project announced Joomla 6.1.1 and 5.4.6 as security and bug-fix releases, and stated that Joomla 5.4.x would receive security patches through October 12, 2027.

Joomla’s administration emphasizes menus, categories, access levels and configurable user groups. That can suit organizations with several editorial roles or a carefully controlled public/private content structure. The same structure can feel less immediately familiar to an editor who has only used a simple WordPress blog.

At-a-glance comparison

Decision area WordPress tends to fit when Joomla tends to fit when
Ecosystem and hiring You need the broadest pool of developers, agencies, tutorials, themes and plugins. Your team already has Joomla expertise or depends on a Joomla extension stack.
Content workflow Editors want a familiar publishing flow and block-based page building. The project needs structured administration, categories, menus and explicit permissions.
Hosting You want the widest range of commodity and managed hosting options. Your host meets Joomla’s PHP and database requirements and provides suitable staging and backups.
Maintenance You can govern a large plugin and theme estate with regular updates and compatibility checks. You prefer a more controlled extension set and can follow Joomla’s release path.
Migration You are starting from scratch or moving into the larger ecosystem. You already have a working Joomla site whose content model and extensions would make migration expensive.

These are practical heuristics, not guarantees. Test the exact extensions, workflows and hosting plan that your project requires.

Content modeling and editorial workflow

Choose WordPress for a familiar publishing path

WordPress is usually easier to introduce to writers who expect a post, page, media library and visual editor. The block editor lets an editor compose a page from reusable content blocks. A carefully chosen theme and a small set of editorial plugins can give nontechnical staff a short learning curve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off is that WordPress can become inconsistent when different plugins add their own editors, custom fields or page builders. Before committing, decide whether your team will use the core block editor, a specific page-building system or a custom editorial interface. Mixing several approaches increases training and migration costs.

Choose Joomla for explicit structure and permissions

Joomla’s categories, menus, user groups and access levels are useful when content must be separated by department, audience or publication state. A site can define who may view, create, edit or publish particular material instead of relying on a collection of plugin-specific role rules.

That control requires planning. Sketch the content tree, menu relationships and editorial roles before building templates. If the structure is left to grow organically, administrators may find the system more complex than a simple WordPress installation. Train editors on where content lives and how menu items, categories and access levels interact.

Questions to answer before selecting either CMS

  • Do you need a blog-like stream, a catalog, documentation, a multilingual site or several content types?
  • Will different teams edit separate sections, and must some content remain private?
  • Who approves, schedules and publishes material?
  • Will editors reuse structured fields across hundreds or thousands of pages?
  • Which content must remain portable if the theme or CMS changes later?

Extensions, themes and support

WordPress has the larger measured web presence in the W3Techs report published in October 2024. That report recorded Joomla at 1.13% of all websites and 1.6% of websites using a known CMS. Those figures are historical context, not a live measurement for October 2026. A larger share generally improves the odds of finding a qualified contractor, a tutorial for an unusual problem or a maintained integration, but popularity does not validate every plugin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Joomla’s smaller market does not mean that it is unmaintained. It does mean that you should verify extension activity more carefully. Check the date of the latest release, supported Joomla and PHP versions, documentation, issue response, licensing and the existence of a tested upgrade path.

Extension due diligence checklist

  • Confirm that the extension supports the CMS major version you will run.
  • Check whether the developer publishes security advisories and compatibility notes.
  • Look for a documented uninstall process and a way to export your data.
  • Test the extension on a staging copy with your theme, caching and authentication settings.
  • Count how many extensions are essential; fewer dependencies usually mean fewer update conflicts.

The same rules apply to themes and templates. A visually impressive theme that stops receiving updates can become a long-term liability. Prefer systems that keep content separate from presentation so a redesign does not require rewriting every page.

Hosting and technical requirements

Joomla 6 requirements

Joomla 6 has explicit platform requirements. The official technical table lists PHP 8.3.0 as the supported minimum and PHP 8.4 as recommended. MySQL 8.0.13 is the minimum and MySQL 8.4 is recommended; MariaDB 10.4 is the minimum and MariaDB 12.0 is recommended; PostgreSQL 12.0 is the minimum and PostgreSQL 17.6 is recommended. Apache 2.4, Nginx 1.26 or newer supported lines, and IIS 10 are listed as compatible web servers. Joomla recommends at least 256 MB of PHP memory.

Component Joomla 6 minimum or supported level Joomla 6 recommended level
PHP 8.3.0 8.4
MySQL 8.0.13 8.4
MariaDB 10.4 12.0
PostgreSQL 12.0 17.6
PHP memory At least 256 MB recommended by Joomla
Web server Compatible Apache 2.4, Nginx 1.26 or newer supported lines, or IIS 10

Required PHP modules include json, simplexml, dom, zlib, gd and an appropriate MySQL or PostgreSQL driver. Ask a host to confirm the exact versions and modules rather than relying on a generic one-click installer label.

WordPress hosting checks

WordPress runs on a wide range of hosts, but broad availability does not remove the need for technical checks. Confirm the PHP version, database engine, memory limit, object-cache or page-cache configuration, backup retention, staging environment and support for the plugins you plan to use. A host that cannot provide a safe staging copy can turn a routine plugin update into a production outage.

Whether you buy managed WordPress hosting, Joomla hosting or another form of CMS hosting, evaluate the operational controls rather than the marketing label:

  • Can you create and restore a full database-and-files backup?
  • Can you test updates on a private staging site?
  • Are PHP and database upgrades scheduled before the CMS drops support?
  • Can you review error logs, uptime alerts and failed update notices?
  • Does the plan provide enough memory and storage for your media library and traffic?

Security and update operations

Do not describe either CMS as inherently secure. Security depends on promptly applying core, extension and server updates; limiting administrator privileges; protecting login and API endpoints; monitoring for suspicious changes; and maintaining recoverable backups.

WordPress 7.1.1 demonstrates active security maintenance with 11 security fixes in one release. Joomla’s official guidance likewise tells administrators to use current releases and upgrade promptly when a release addresses security issues. A current core version cannot compensate for an abandoned plugin, an exposed administrator account or a backup that has never been tested.

A practical maintenance routine

  1. Maintain an inventory of core, plugins, themes, templates and server components.
  2. Subscribe to security announcements for the CMS and every critical extension.
  3. Take a tested backup before updates; retain at least one copy outside the production server.
  4. Apply updates on staging first and check login, forms, search, checkout, multilingual features and scheduled jobs.
  5. Deploy during a monitored maintenance window and review logs afterward.
  6. Remove unused extensions, themes, administrator accounts and API credentials.
  7. Rehearse restoration so a failed update has a known recovery path.

Accessibility and performance

Neither CMS guarantees an accessible or fast site. Accessibility is determined by the theme or template, semantic markup, keyboard behavior, color contrast, form labels, media alternatives and the content editors publish. Test the actual front end with keyboard navigation, a screen reader and automated checks, then fix issues in the theme and components rather than assuming the CMS has solved them.

Performance likewise depends on images, scripts, database queries, caching, hosting resources and third-party services. A lightweight site on either platform can outperform a heavily customized installation on the other. Establish a baseline for key pages, test logged-in and logged-out states, and measure after each major extension or theme change.

Cost and total ownership

Both WordPress and Joomla are open-source projects, so the license does not determine the project budget. The meaningful costs are hosting, paid extensions or templates, custom development, security monitoring, backups, accessibility work, editorial training and future migration.

WordPress can reduce initial development cost because more ready-made integrations and contractors are available. Its larger extension estate can also increase recurring review and compatibility work. Joomla may require a narrower search for specialists, while its structured permissions can reduce the need for several separate role-management extensions. Estimate the full three-year operating cost instead of comparing only the first installation quote.

Migration: when switching is and is not worth it

Moving to WordPress

A move to WordPress makes sense when the current site is being rebuilt, the team cannot find maintainers for its existing stack, or the required integrations are substantially better supported in WordPress. Plan URL mapping, metadata, media paths, user accounts, redirects, search indexing, forms and analytics before importing content.

Moving to Joomla

A move to Joomla can be justified when the project needs its access-level model, category and menu structure, or a Joomla extension that closely matches the business process. Build a content map and permission matrix first. Confirm that every required integration has a maintained Joomla version and that the destination host meets Joomla 6 requirements.

Migration controls for either direction

  1. Freeze a content inventory and export the source database and media.
  2. Map each content type, field, author, category, menu item and URL to the destination.
  3. Build the destination on staging and import a representative sample before the full migration.
  4. Preserve or intentionally redirect every valuable URL; record redirect mappings.
  5. Compare page counts, metadata, internal links, forms, permissions and media files.
  6. Run a crawl and accessibility check, then obtain stakeholder sign-off.
  7. Lower DNS or hosting transition risk with a rehearsed cutover and a rollback copy.

A decision framework for your project

Score each factor from one to five for your project, then weight the factors that matter most. This prevents a general market statistic from overriding a critical technical requirement.

Factor Questions to score
Content model Which CMS represents your content types and relationships with fewer workarounds?
Editorial workflow Will writers understand the editor, approvals, scheduling and revisions?
Permissions Can you implement least-privilege access without fragile custom code?
Extensions Are the required integrations maintained for the target CMS and PHP version?
Hosting Does the host meet versions, memory, backups, staging and monitoring needs?
People Can you hire or train someone to maintain the site when the original builder leaves?
Migration cost Would changing platforms discard working content, URLs or business logic?
Operations Can the team apply security updates and restore the site under pressure?

Recommended starting paths

Choose WordPress when most of these statements are true

  • This is a new marketing site, publication or small business website.
  • Editors want a familiar block-based workflow.
  • You expect to hire from a broad pool of agencies and freelancers.
  • Your hosting budget favors a large selection of managed and commodity plans.
  • Your required features have well-maintained WordPress integrations.

Choose Joomla when most of these statements are true

  • You already operate Joomla successfully and migration has no clear business payoff.
  • The site needs detailed groups, access levels, categories and menu relationships.
  • Your team has Joomla experience or a dependable Joomla maintainer.
  • Your host meets Joomla 6’s PHP, database, web-server and memory requirements.
  • The required extensions are maintained and tested against your target Joomla release.

What to verify before launch

  • Record the exact CMS, PHP, database, web-server and extension versions.
  • Confirm that the hosting provider can create, test and restore backups.
  • Document administrator roles, update responsibility and emergency contacts.
  • Test contact forms, authentication, search, media uploads, scheduled tasks and transactional email.
  • Run accessibility, performance, security and broken-link checks on representative pages.
  • Write a rollback plan for core, extension and server updates.
  • Set a calendar reminder to review support dates and release announcements.

Joomla’s current 6.x requirements and WordPress’s 2026 security releases show why the decision must include operations, not just the initial build. Recheck release versions, support dates, extension compatibility and hosting offers immediately before you commit, because those details change faster than a CMS comparison article.
