To host Cave Factory, use the separate Cave Factory – dev_server_pack.zip server download for Cave Factory v1.2.0, run it with Java 8 on Minecraft 1.16.5 Forge, accept the EULA after the first launch stops, and make sure every player installs the identical pack and loader version. Friends on the same computer or network can connect directly; internet players need port 25565 forwarded to the host or a tunnel service.

What the Cave Factory server actually runs
Cave Factory is a CurseForge modpack by naszos for Minecraft 1.16.5 using Forge. The project describes it as a “stoneblock like questing modpack”: players begin in a room containing a zombie spawner inside a world made from stone. Its progression prominently uses Create, Blood Magic and Immersive Engineering.

The latest release listed by the project is v1.2.0, and the project provides a separate server-pack file. The project page displayed 565,477 downloads when checked; that number changes over time and is not a permanent total.

Use those values as a compatibility lock. A server running one release while a client uses another can fail during login even when both installations appear to be Cave Factory.

Download the right server pack
Open the Cave Factory project on CurseForge, go to its Files area, and look under Additional Files. Modpack server packs are published separately from the client-facing launcher file. Select the file named Cave Factory v1.2.0 - Server pack; the downloaded archive is named Cave Factory - dev_server_pack.zip.
- Do not substitute a similarly named archive from another Cave Factory release.
- Do not combine the v1.2.0 server archive with a different client profile, Minecraft version or Forge installation.
- Keep the original ZIP until the server has started successfully; it gives you a clean source if the extracted directory becomes corrupted.
The server archive is the starting point for the server files. Players still need a matching client installation of the modpack, not a random collection of individually downloaded mods.

Java 8
Cave Factory targets Minecraft 1.16.5. CurseForge’s setup guidance maps “Java 8 for 1.16.5 and older,” so select a Java 8 runtime for this server. Newer Java versions can produce launch or mod-loading errors with older Forge packs.
Verify the runtime from a terminal or command prompt:
java -versionThe output should identify a Java 8 runtime. If the command is not found, install Java 8 and add its executable to your system PATH, or configure the start file to use the full path to the Java 8 executable. The setup guide links to Adoptium as a Java distributor, but the important compatibility requirement is the major version, not a particular vendor.

A dedicated server directory
Create a folder used only for this world, such as CaveFactoryServer. Keeping it separate prevents unrelated Forge installations, old configurations and different modpacks from being mixed into the same mods, config and world files. On a shared computer, choose a location that your user account can read and write without administrator prompts.
Network access
Local play needs no internet-facing setup. Players outside your home network require either router port forwarding or a tunnel. Decide which path you will use before inviting people, because the address players enter depends on it.
Install the server locally
Use this sequence for a first installation. The first launch is intentionally incomplete: it creates the files needed for the EULA and configuration, then stops.
- Create the directory. Make the dedicated server folder and open it.
- Extract the archive. Unzip
Cave Factory - dev_server_pack.zipdirectly into that folder. Avoid an extra nested directory if the supplied start file would then be one level deeper than expected. - Check Java. Run
java -versionand confirm Java 8 before attempting to start Forge. - Run the supplied start file. Use the Windows batch file on Windows or the supplied shell script on a Unix-like system. The archive’s launcher is preferable to inventing a new command because it carries the pack’s intended Forge setup and arguments.
- Let the first launch finish. It will generate files and then stop. This is expected behavior, not a crash by itself.
- Accept the EULA. Open the newly created
eula.txt, changeeula=falsetoeula=true, save the file, and close it. - Start again. Run the same supplied start file. Forge should load the server and leave it running instead of stopping at the EULA check.
- Stop cleanly once. After the server finishes loading, stop it through its server console before making configuration changes. A clean stop reduces the chance of an incomplete world save.
Server-side mods belong in the extracted server directory’s mods folder. Do not copy client-only performance, display or launcher mods into that folder; a client-only mod can prevent Forge from starting. The server pack should already contain the server-side set, so add files only when you know they are required by the matching pack release.
Keep every installation on the same version
Version matching is the most common reason a friend cannot join. Each player must use Minecraft 1.16.5, the Forge loader expected by the pack, and the same Cave Factory release as the server. A launcher profile that says “Cave Factory” is not enough if it points to a different release or loader.

- Compare the Minecraft version shown in the launcher profile.
- Confirm the profile uses Forge rather than another loader.
- Confirm the pack release is v1.2.0 if the server uses the v1.2.0 server archive.
- Remove manually added client mods that are not part of the matching profile when they trigger a mod-list mismatch.
When updating later, treat the pack, server archive, client profiles and Forge loader as one unit. Back up the world, install the new server files in a separate directory, and test with one matching client before moving an established world to a different release.
Configure the server before inviting players
Authentication and a whitelist
Leave online-mode=true in server.properties. This makes the server verify valid Minecraft accounts instead of accepting unauthenticated names. Also set white-list=true so only approved players can enter. Add people to the whitelist through the server’s normal whitelist controls, then restart or reload as required by the server console.
These settings are especially important when the server is reachable from the public internet. A private address is not a substitute for authentication or an access list.
World and server files
Do not delete the generated world, config directory or mods directory while troubleshooting unless you have a backup. Those files contain the world state and mod configuration. If you need to test a suspected configuration problem, make a copy of the whole server directory and test the copy.

Stop the server before copying its world and configuration files. A backup made while chunks and player data are being written may be incomplete. Keep at least one backup away from the machine that runs the server; a disk failure or accidental deletion should not remove both the live world and its only copy.

Port forwarding sends incoming traffic from the router to the machine running the server. Give the host computer a stable local address, or the forwarding rule may point to the wrong device after a DHCP change. Do not publish your local address to internet players; they need the public IPv4 address.
Using a tunnel instead of forwarding
CurseForge describes Playit.gg as an alternative when port forwarding is difficult. A tunnel can avoid router changes, but the same guide cautions that it may be less stable. Treat it as a fallback for a small private session, not as a guaranteed production connection. Players use the tunnel address supplied by the service rather than your home public address.

Diagnose the common failures
The server stops immediately
Check whether this was the expected first-launch stop. If eula.txt exists and still says eula=false, accept the EULA and start again. If it stops after that, confirm Java 8 with java -version, run the supplied start file from the server directory, and read the final lines in the console for a missing file or mod error.
Forge reports a mod or version mismatch
Compare the client’s Minecraft version, Forge loader and Cave Factory release with the server. Remove extra client mods that are not in the pack. Do not fix a mismatch by copying an arbitrary version of a mod into the server’s mods folder; use the matching pack files instead.
A friend cannot see or join the server
For a same-network player, verify the local IP address and firewall. For an internet player, verify that port 25565 forwards to the correct host and that the player is using the public IPv4 address with the port suffix. If the address is correct but the connection fails, test locally first; a local success separates a game or Forge problem from a router or tunnel problem.
Players connect but the world lags
Lower view-distance first, then lower simulation-distance in server.properties. The first setting reduces how much world data is sent and kept active around players; the second reduces the area where entities and game logic tick. Change one setting at a time, restart the server, and observe whether chunk loading and mob behavior improve.

Frozen entities usually indicate that the server is struggling to keep up with scheduled ticks. Reduce simulation-distance, then reduce view-distance if necessary. Also check how many players are loading separate areas and whether a newly built machine or farm is creating unusually high activity.
How much RAM does Cave Factory need?
No source establishes a Cave Factory-specific minimum or maximum RAM value. Do not treat a generic modded-Minecraft number as an official requirement. Memory demand changes with player count, how many chunks are loaded at once, world activity and the behavior of the pack’s mods.
Start with a conservative allocation that leaves enough memory for the operating system, then observe the server while players explore, load new chunks and use automated machines. Increase the allocation only when logs or monitoring show memory pressure; assigning excessive RAM can also leave too little for the operating system and other services. The useful measurements are sustained memory use, garbage-collection pauses, tick time and whether lag appears during exploration—not a number copied from a hosting advertisement.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Running the server at home gives you direct control over files, Forge, backups and network settings, but you are responsible for uptime, router configuration, firewall rules and hardware. Managed hosting moves the machine and network work to a provider, usually in exchange for a recurring fee. The cited material does not establish a current Cave Factory-specific price or performance guarantee for any provider.

The Cave Factory project description includes the author-linked address https://www.bisecthosting.com/tismas. That is a project-author link, not evidence of current affiliate terms, availability or a guaranteed Cave Factory configuration.
Modrinth Hosting advertises Forge support, a file manager, SFTP, 15 off-site backups, custom URLs and plans displayed as 4 GB, 6 GB and 8 GB RAM. Its page says it supports Minecraft Java versions back to 1.2.5 where the loader supports the selected version. Cave Factory is not shown on the cited page as a native Modrinth pack, so verify that you can upload the official server archive and select a compatible Forge installation before paying. Those listed RAM tiers are plan sizes, not a Cave Factory requirement.
A practical maintenance routine
- Keep the original server archive and record that the live installation is v1.2.0.
- Back up the world and configuration while the server is stopped.
- Check that
online-mode=trueandwhite-list=trueremain enabled. - Review player access whenever someone should be removed from the whitelist.
- Watch memory use, tick performance and lag during exploration rather than judging performance from an idle server.
- Change
view-distancebeforesimulation-distancewhen reducing load, then test the result. - Before changing the pack or Forge loader, make a separate test copy and connect with one client using the exact same versions.
Once the server starts cleanly, accepts the EULA, authenticates players and passes a local connection test, remote access becomes a networking choice rather than a modpack mystery. Keeping the server archive, Java runtime, Forge loader and client profile aligned is the key to a stable Cave Factory world.
