How to See Which Bots and AI Crawlers Are Visiting Your Angular Site

Angular code rarely records crawler visits. Here is how to find GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, and Googlebot in server and CDN logs, and verify them before trusting a user-agent.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To see which bots reach an Angular site, read the access logs kept by the server, hosting platform, or CDN that receives the requests. Your Angular code usually does not record crawler visits, and the browser-side analytics script often misses them entirely. Search those logs for crawler tokens such as Googlebot, GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, and ChatGPT-User, keep the source IP next to the user-agent, and verify any identity claim before you act on it.

Start at the layer that receives requests

Requests to a deployed Angular app pass through a chain of components, and each one may keep its own record. A typical path looks like this:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • CDN or WAF (for example Cloudflare, Fastly, or a cloud provider’s edge service), which sees traffic first.
  • Load balancer, if your setup has one.
  • Web server or host (Nginx, Apache, a managed static host, or a platform’s request log), which serves the built files or proxies to the app.
  • Angular runtime, but only if you run server-side rendering. A purely client-rendered app has no server runtime to log from.

Look at the earliest layer that receives external traffic. It sees the widest set of requests, including ones a later layer never handles. If a CDN answers a request from its cache, the origin server may never see it, so the origin log can look quieter than the real traffic. Confirm that the log you choose retains records for the period you are investigating, because many logs roll over after a fixed window.

Search the logs for crawler tokens

Once you have the right log, the first pass is a case-insensitive search for known tokens. The steps below assume a web server that writes standard combined-format access logs, which is the default for many Nginx and Apache setups. Adjust the path and the tool to your own host.

  1. Confirm which log holds external requests. On a self-managed Nginx server this is often /var/log/nginx/access.log. On a CDN, use that provider’s log export or log API instead.
  2. Run a case-insensitive search for the first set of tokens:
    grep -iE "googlebot|gptbot|oai-searchbot|chatgpt-user" /var/log/nginx/access.log
  3. For each hit, keep five fields together: timestamp, request path, response status, source IP, and user-agent. Without the IP and the path, you cannot verify the request or tell what it fetched.
  4. Group the results by token and by path. A count per token is the start of a crawler profile, not a conclusion about traffic volume.

A combined-format line carries these fields in order. The address below comes from a documentation range and is illustrative only:

203.0.113.10 - - [09/Oct/2026:08:14:32 +0000] "GET /pricing HTTP/1.1" 200 15342 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; GPTBot/1.2; +https://openai.com/gptbot)"

The user-agent in that example contains a version number. Match the crawler token, not the full string, because the version part can change.

Know what each named crawler means

Do not collapse all AI-related traffic into one count. The operators publish different identifiers for different purposes, and the distinctions matter when you decide what to allow or block. The table below summarizes the names that the official documentation describes, as of the date of this article.

Token to search for What the operator says it does Robots.txt and control notes How to treat it in your counts
OAI-SearchBot Surfaces websites in ChatGPT search (OpenAI). Opting out affects appearance in ChatGPT search answers. Sites can still appear as navigational links. Count as search-related. Publishes IP data for verification.
GPTBot Crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI’s generative AI foundation models. Has its own user-agent and IP range in OpenAI’s documentation. Keep separate from search crawling.
ChatGPT-User Visits pages in response to certain user actions in ChatGPT or Custom GPTs. OpenAI says it is not an automatic web crawler. Because fetches are user-triggered, robots.txt rules may not apply. Do not count as equivalent to automatic search indexing.
Googlebot (Smartphone and Desktop variants) Google Search crawling. Both variants are identifiable by their user-agent strings. Both use the same Googlebot token in robots.txt. Google says most Search crawling uses the mobile crawler. Group as Google Search crawling, and verify the source IP.
Google-Extended Not a separate HTTP user-agent. It is a robots.txt control token for certain uses of Google-crawled content. Does not affect inclusion in Google Search and is not a Search ranking signal. Crawling for it uses existing Google user-agent strings. Do not search logs for this token. Look for the Google user-agent strings and verify them.
GoogleOther A generic crawler used by various Google product teams for publicly accessible content and internal research and development. Google’s documentation does not describe it as a Search crawler. Do not report it as a Google Search visit.

Official documentation for these identifiers is at OpenAI’s crawler documentation for the OpenAI tokens, Google’s Googlebot documentation for the Googlebot variants, and Google’s common crawlers page for Google-Extended and GoogleOther.

Verify a claimed Google crawler before you trust it

A user-agent string is a label that any client can send. Google explicitly cautions that its user-agent is often spoofed, so a log line that says Googlebot is a claim to check, not proof. Do not block, allow, or report a request as a genuine Google crawler on the strength of the string alone.

Google’s documented manual method works on a single logged IP:

  1. Run a reverse DNS lookup on the source IP from the log. For example, host 203.0.113.10 or dig -x 203.0.113.10.
  2. Confirm that the returned hostname is in one of the domains Google accepts: googlebot.com, google.com, or googleusercontent.com.
  3. Run a forward lookup on that hostname.
  4. Confirm that the forward lookup returns the original source IP. If it does not, treat the request as unverified.

For larger volumes, Google documents matching source IPs against its published crawler IP ranges instead of running DNS for each request. The full process is in Google’s verification documentation. For OpenAI crawlers, the same principle applies: OpenAI publishes IP data alongside its user-agent descriptions, so check the current operator page before you build an allowlist, since those ranges change.

Read the path, not just the name

A crawler’s identity tells you who sent the request. The path and status tell you what it asked for, and that matters as much. Interpret the two together:

  • Requests for /robots.txt are a different event from a fetch of a content page. OpenAI notes that its crawlers can mark robots.txt requests in their user-agent, which is especially useful if your logs omit paths in other places.
  • Content page fetches show which URLs a crawler reached. A pattern of fetches to pages you have disallowed in robots.txt is worth investigating, but remember that ChatGPT-User fetches are user-triggered and may not follow robots.txt rules.
  • Status codes show what your stack returned. A run of 403 or 429 responses can indicate a WAF or rate-limit rule at the edge, which is useful information for a CDN-fronted site.
  • Redacted fields can make this impossible. Some services hide or truncate the user-agent, path, or IP. If those fields are missing, you can count hits, but you cannot separate robots.txt checks from content fetches or verify the source.

What Angular’s rendering mode changes

Angular supports three deployment modes, and each one changes where application code runs and what the app can see about a request. Client-side rendering (CSR) is the default. Server-side rendering (SSR) produces HTML on the server for each request. Prerendering generates route HTML once, at build time.

Angular’s documentation states the CSR case this way: “When client-side rendering, the server does not need to do any work to render a page beyond serving static JavaScript assets.” That describes rendering work. It does not mean the server keeps no logs. Requests for the JavaScript assets, the HTML shell, and the routes still arrive at your web server or CDN, and those layers record them.

The app itself sees very little in the CSR and prerendering cases. Angular’s SSR support provides the current Web API Request through the REQUEST injection token, including access to request headers. Angular documents that token as null during browser rendering and during static site generation. In practice this means:

  • Under SSR, application code can read request headers for a given page request, which can support server-side behavior and supplemental logging.
  • Under CSR, the app cannot see the crawler’s request at all, because the request never reaches Angular on the server.
  • Under prerendering, pages are generated at build time, so the crawler’s request is served as a static file. The web server or CDN logs show it, not your app code.
  • App-level instrumentation can also vary by hosting adapter, so it is not a dependable universal visitor log.

Use infrastructure access logs as the primary source for incoming requests. Treat app-level logging as a supplement you add only when you run SSR. Angular’s SSR guide is at angular.dev/guide/ssr.

Check the CDN when origin logs look incomplete

Origin logs are not always the full picture. A CDN keeps its own request records, which can show requests that never reached your origin. Cloudflare describes its Logpull API as returning request logs containing “data related to the connecting client, the request path through the Cloudflare network, and the response from the origin web server.” That lists the record types the API provides. Whether your account has access to Logpull, what retention applies, and what fields your plan includes all need checking in your own account. Other CDNs expose different log products, and the fields and retention can differ.

Cloudflare’s documentation is at developers.cloudflare.com/logs/logpull/.

Why AI crawlers may not appear in your analytics

Client-side analytics tags record a visit only when a browser loads the page and runs the script. A crawler that fetches the HTML, or the assets, without executing the tag leaves no entry in that analytics view. This is a property of how those tools work, not a measurement of how often AI crawlers visit. The server or CDN log is where those fetches are recorded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When no crawler shows up

If your search returns nothing, work through these checks in order:

  • Layer: Confirm you are reading the log that receives external requests. An origin log will miss requests answered by a cache at the edge.
  • Edge filtering: Check whether a CDN or WAF rule blocks or challenges requests before they reach the origin. Blocked requests may show only in the edge log.
  • Retention: Confirm the log covers the window you are checking.
  • Crawler activity: Confirm the crawler has actually tried to reach your site. A missing token in one stream does not show that no request reached any upstream system.
  • Token spelling: Search case-insensitively, and for Google, remember that Google-Extended will not appear in logs as its own user-agent.

Choose where to inspect logs

If you are choosing where to read or collect logs, compare the options on four axes rather than by brand:

  • Position: Does the layer see requests before or after CDN and WAF filtering?
  • Fields: Does it keep source IP, user-agent, path, status, and timestamp?
  • Retention and access: How long are records kept, and can you export or query them?
  • Coverage: Does it cover SSR application requests as well as static asset delivery?

A site that runs only static builds may find that its CDN or web server logs answer most questions. A site that runs SSR may need both the edge log and the Angular-side context for requests that reach the server runtime.
