You can also ask ChatGPT, “What do you remember about me?” The controls and labels can differ by plan, region, platform, and managed workspace.
Review ChatGPT’s memory settings
- Open ChatGPT and select Settings.
- Select Personalization, then Memory.
- Review the controls shown for your account. Depending on availability, these may include Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories.
- If a memory summary is available, read it to see the high-level information ChatGPT may use to personalize responses. OpenAI describes it as a high-level view, not a complete record of every detail or source.
See OpenAI’s Memory FAQ and Memory in ChatGPT for its current descriptions of these controls.

Ask ChatGPT what it remembers
In a chat, ask: “What do you remember about me?” OpenAI’s Memory FAQ recommends asking directly. This conversational check can reveal information that is useful to know, but it is not a guaranteed inventory of everything that could affect personalization.
When personal context informs a response, a Sources control may identify contributing material, such as a chat, saved memory, custom instruction, file, or connected email. Sources may not show every factor, and the memory summary may omit details or sources. A short or empty summary therefore does not prove that no past information is being used.

Change or remove something ChatGPT remembers
Correct an outdated detail
Tell ChatGPT that a detail is wrong or outdated. If your account offers editing, you can also update it in the memory summary or saved-memory controls.
Stop a detail from being mentioned
Tell ChatGPT not to use a detail in future responses, or choose “Don’t mention this again” if that option appears. This changes personalization behavior; it does not necessarily delete the chat, file, email, or other source containing the information.
Rank #2
Delete a saved memory and its source
Remove the item from the memory summary or saved-memory list, where available. Saved memories are stored separately from chats, so deleting the chat where a detail first appeared may not remove the saved memory. For removal from ChatGPT, check every relevant place the information may exist, including regular and archived chats, Library files, connected apps, and saved memories. Deletion and memory updates can take time to propagate.
Know what each control does
| Action | What it affects | Does it delete the original source? |
|---|---|---|
| Correct a detail or request that it not be mentioned | How ChatGPT personalizes responses | No. The source may remain. |
| Delete a saved memory | The saved-memory entry | Not necessarily. Check and delete the chat or other source separately. |
| Turn off Memory | Whether the relevant memory feature is active | No. Turning it off does not delete past chats. |
| Turn off Reference chat history | Information remembered from past chats; OpenAI says deletion of that remembered information is scheduled within 30 days | No. The original chats remain unless you delete them separately. |
| Use Temporary Chat | Whether a conversation uses existing memories or creates new memories for personalization | No. It is a conversation mode, not a cleanup of existing sources. |
In the experience described by OpenAI, turning off Reference saved memories also turns off Reference chat history. Check the controls and explanations shown in your account, since availability and labels can vary.

Understand the limits of deletion and memory controls
Reference chat history and saved memories are distinct. Chat history reference can draw on relevant information from past conversations, and the information it draws on can change as ChatGPT updates what is useful. Saved memories are retained separately until removed.
OpenAI says deleted saved-memory logs may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. That is a policy time window for those logs, not a guarantee that every copy of information across all sources is deleted within 30 days.
If a Memory control is missing in a managed workspace, an owner or administrator may control whether supported settings are available. Ask your workspace administrator about access.

Keep memory separate from model-training controls
For personal accounts, model-improvement settings are under Settings > Data Controls. Turning that setting off is separate from reviewing or deleting memory; it does not perform those memory-management actions.
Best Value
Use Temporary Chat for a conversation without personalization memory
Start a Temporary Chat when you do not want the conversation to use existing memories or create new ones for personalization. OpenAI explains this feature in its Temporary chat in ChatGPT help article. If a conversation is saved as a regular chat, it follows the account’s ordinary personalization settings.
