How Electronic Warfare Disrupts Military Drones—and How Operators Respond

Electronic warfare can disrupt drone links and navigation or expose control stations. Here’s how unit-level communications practices and navigation resilience help—and where their limits remain.

Electronic warfare can disrupt a military drone by interfering with the radio link between aircraft and control station, degrading satellite navigation, or helping an adversary locate the people transmitting to it. Operators and commanders respond with a mix of communications planning, emissions control, training, and navigation resilience—but each measure has limits, and reducing radio exposure can also make a unit harder to coordinate.

How can electronic warfare disrupt a drone mission?

A military drone depends on the electromagnetic environment for some combination of control, reporting, and navigation. The effect of interference varies with the aircraft, its link architecture, its mission, and local conditions; there is no single outcome that applies to every system.

Jamming can interfere with control links

Jamming interferes with reception of a signal a system relies on. The U.S. Army describes enemy electronic-warfare systems jamming connections between drones and their control stations, potentially severing the link and inhibiting unmanned aircraft system (UAS) collection. That account does not establish a universal range, success rate, or what every aircraft will do after losing contact. The Army’s April 2025 discussion of emissions-control procedures describes the threat in that operational context.

Navigation signals can be jammed or spoofed

Satellite navigation is another possible target. Jamming interferes with a receiver’s ability to receive the signals it needs; spoofing presents misleading signals that may deceive a receiver. Both can affect navigation, but the outcome depends on the equipment and circumstances. The sources identify GPS interference and spoofing as threats without measuring how often they succeed across different drone types.

Transmissions can expose control stations

Radio-frequency direction finding can help locate an emitter. The Army article reports that Russian direction-finding capabilities have enabled identification of drone-control stations for indirect fires. A transmission that supports control or reporting can therefore create an exposure risk. Detection is a possibility, not an automatic consequence of every transmission.

What can operators and units do?

There is no single countermeasure that addresses link disruption, navigation interference, and detection at once. The measures below are unit-level practices described in the Army article; their usefulness depends on the mission, local threat, equipment, and training.

Measure Threat it can address Operational cost or limit
Emissions control: transmit only when needed, keep messages concise, and avoid predictable transmission patterns. Can reduce opportunities for detection and help limit unnecessary exposure to electronic warfare. Less frequent communication may reduce situational awareness, coordination, or responsiveness.
Communications planning: prepare alternate ways to pass information and tailor procedures to the mission and threat. Can help a unit continue coordinating when a usual connection is disrupted or unsuitable. Alternatives need to be usable, understood, and practiced; planning alone does not guarantee a working connection.
Power and spectrum choices: use the lowest transmission power that achieves receipt and assess which parts of the spectrum may be vulnerable locally. Can adapt emissions to conditions and reduce unnecessary signal exposure. Effectiveness depends on the situation; a setting that works in one environment may not work in another.
Navigation resilience, including military GPS modernization such as M-code. M-code is intended to make military GPS more resistant to interference or jamming. Availability depends on receiver integration, testing, and fielding; it should not be assumed for every platform.

The Army frames emissions control (EMCON) as selective, controlled use of emitters to preserve command and control while minimizing detection, friendly interference, and certain forms of enemy interference. In practice, commanders must weigh lower signature against the information flow and responsiveness needed for a particular task. A more restrictive posture may suit a less dynamic activity; a unit that needs frequent coordination may have to accept more transmissions. EMCON reduces some risks; it does not remove electronic-warfare threats.

Make procedures usable through training

In its guidance for combined-arms battalions and cavalry squadrons, CPT Ryan McGovern recommends unit standard operating procedures tailored to the mission and enemy capabilities, with EMCON procedures incorporated into readiness activities. Training needs to validate communications plans and teach personnel how restrictive settings affect coordination. The Army article emphasizes that procedures are only useful when personnel are proficient and communications equipment is usable.

The same article cites the 1988 Certain Strike exercise, in which 4,534 vehicles, including 813 tracked vehicles, moved 150 kilometers during 42 hours of radio-listening silence. That example illustrates the historical use of emissions discipline; it is not evidence about drone performance or a template for current operations.

How resilient is military GPS?

M-code is a military-specific GPS signal designed to resist interference or jamming. The Government Accountability Office’s September 9, 2024 report, GPS Modernization: Delays Continue in Delivering More Secure Capability for the Warfighter (GAO-24-106841), found continuing challenges across the space, ground-control, and user-equipment segments, including remaining testing and integration work and risks to schedule and fielding. The report shows why an intended resilience feature should not be treated as universally available. Its findings describe the program as of 2024, not its present-day status.

What can public sources establish about effectiveness?

Public sources support the mechanisms and unit-level considerations described here, but they do not establish a dependable current rate of drone losses, jamming success, or spoofing effectiveness across platforms and battlefields. The Department of Defense announced on December 5, 2024, that the Secretary had signed a classified strategy for countering unmanned systems. The announcement establishes that the issue is a DoD priority; because the strategy is classified, it does not reveal the strategy’s full contents or prove particular operational results.
