First confirm routes, entrances, parking, pickup and delivery access with the road project team; then keep the same dated directions current on signs, your website or listing, email and social media.
Get confirmed access details before you publish directions
Ask the project owner or contractor for the information customers and suppliers will need. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) says project notices can cover traffic, duration and foreseeable disruptions, and that businesses can raise special needs. FHWA’s business access guidance also frames access and signage as issues to coordinate during construction.
- Construction schedule, phases and dates when access may change.
- Road closures, detours and the recommended approach from familiar cross streets.
- Whether sidewalks and pedestrian routes remain usable, and which entrance or driveway is available.
- Customer parking, pickup or curbside options, including any temporary changes.
- Delivery routes, permitted delivery times and constraints for suppliers.
- A named project contact and the best way to receive updates or report a blocked route.
Do not state that a road, sidewalk, entrance or parking area is open unless the project team has confirmed it. If a detail is uncertain, leave it out and tell customers where to check for an update.
Give customers a route they can follow
“We’re open” is reassuring, but it does not tell someone how to get through a closure. Give customers a practical route: the approach to use, a recognizable turn or cross street, the usable entrance, and where to park or collect an order. A simple map can make the route easier to understand. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation recommends maps that show alternate routes; the Minnesota Department of Transportation suggests sharing maps on doors, social media and mailings.

Keep the map focused on the decisions a visitor must make. Mark the store, the confirmed approach, the entrance customers should use and the parking or pickup point. Add a last-updated date to digital directions so customers can judge whether they are current.
Tell customers the store is open—and where to look next
Use plain wording near the entrance and repeat it in the places customers already check. MnDOT offers sample “doors are open” messaging and warns that navigation apps may not follow the official detour. Do not rely on an app route alone when the project’s local directions differ.

These channels serve different moments: signs reach nearby visitors, while a web page or map can explain more; email and social updates reach existing audiences. Repeat one verified set of directions rather than letting each channel develop a different version.
Coordinate signs and requests with the project team
Ask the project contact which signs are allowed, where they may be placed and whether approval is required. Roadside and detour sign rules vary by agency and location. MnDOT says it directs drivers to business areas rather than listing individual businesses on detour signs; WisDOT describes temporary business signs subject to agency guidelines. Neither practice should be assumed to apply elsewhere.

FHWA identifies possible requests such as roadway entrance signs, temporary access points, alternate parking, a single agency contact and regular project reports. These are options to discuss, not guaranteed services. Work through safety and feasibility, which agency controls the street or sign, how long the change will last, and who needs to know.
Plan for deliveries, pickup and each construction phase
Before work starts
- Identify the project owner and a contact who can confirm access details.
- Request the current schedule and phase map, routes, entrance and parking arrangements, pedestrian access, delivery rules and expected changes.
- Attend a public meeting if one is offered, and raise business-specific access needs.
- Build a short customer FAQ and map from confirmed facts. Prepare matching storefront, web listing, email and social messages.
- Confirm delivery routes and timing with suppliers. If the regular entrance is restricted, ask whether an alternate entrance or customer pickup arrangement is feasible.
At each phase change
- Verify the route, entrance, parking and delivery access with the project contact.
- Update the map, storefront signs, listing and pinned social post together; add an updated date to digital notices.
- Send the new directions to staff and suppliers so they do not give conflicting instructions.
- Report blocked or misleading access to the contractor promptly.
FHWA recommends regular project reports, and the City of Toronto advises businesses to subscribe to updates and refresh signage as required. Use the project’s update channel so you can revise customer directions when conditions change.

After construction
When the project team confirms the work is complete, tell customers access has changed back or improved and invite them to return. MnDOT suggests a post-project celebration and sharing feedback with the agency.

Keep the notice visible where customers make a decision: at the storefront, on the store’s current directions page or listing, and in the social or email channels used for updates. If access changes again, replace the old directions rather than leaving conflicting notices in circulation.
