To secure TikTok, start with the app’s Security checkup: verify your recovery phone and email, turn on 2-step verification, and review signed-in devices. To control who sees your content, make your account private if you want to approve followers, then set an audience for each post. These controls do different jobs: a private account does not hide your profile, and post audiences do not replace account-security settings.
Secure account access first
TikTok’s Security checkup groups key account protections in one place. In the app, go to Profile → Menu ☰ → Settings and privacy → Security & permissions → Security checkup. Review the linked phone number and email address, enable 2-step verification, inspect trusted devices, and check security activity. TikTok recommends 2-step verification because it adds an identity check when you log in from a new or unfamiliar device. TikTok’s instructions say to choose at least two verification methods; options include phone, email, an authenticator, and password. An authenticator method requires an authenticator app, such as Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator. TikTok’s account safety guidance also documents passkey setup under Profile → Menu → Settings and privacy → Account → Passkey. Passkeys use security features available on your device; availability can depend on the device and account.

Review devices and respond to unfamiliar access
To check devices, open Profile → Menu → Settings and privacy → Security & permissions → Manage devices. Remove any device you do not recognize, then change your password, as TikTok advises. If a menu label or path differs in your app version, search within Settings and privacy for the feature name.
Choose public or private account status
A private account creates an approval gate for followers: you decide who may follow you and view your videos, LIVE videos, bio, likes, and follower and following lists. To switch it on, go to Profile → Menu ☰ → Settings and privacy → Privacy and enable Private account. TikTok says other users cannot Duet or Stitch with, download, create stickers with, or add to Stories posts from a private account. See TikTok’s public and private account guidance.

Private does not mean invisible. Your nickname, username, and profile photo remain visible to people on or off TikTok, and people can still search for your account. With a public account, content may be visible or shareable outside TikTok and may appear in search engines and other sites.

Set the audience for each post
Account status sets a broad boundary, but you can also choose who may view an individual post. For a new post, select the audience on the posting or preview screen. To change an existing post, open it from your profile, tap More options … → Privacy settings, and choose its audience. TikTok’s post visibility guidance lists these options:

Changing a post’s visibility does not reset its view count; the displayed total reflects views to date. TikTok also notes that content may be visible globally even where a feature is unavailable.

Limit comments and contact separately
Comments have their own controls. Go to Profile → Menu ☰ → Settings and privacy → Privacy → Comments to choose who may comment. Available choices depend on account type and include Everyone, Followers, or Friends (followers you follow back). You can also turn comments off for an individual post. Review direct-message and account-suggestion settings separately as well. TikTok’s public/private account guidance treats these as distinct options, so changing the private-account switch alone should not be assumed to change who can contact you or whether TikTok suggests your account to others.
