If you think someone accessed your OpenAI account, treat it as a possible account compromise: change any exposed password, sign out of active sessions, revoke exposed API keys, preserve evidence, and contact OpenAI Support. This does not by itself establish that OpenAI suffered a platform-wide data breach.
Act first: contain access to your account
Work through these steps promptly. If you use both ChatGPT and the API, handle each credential separately: signing out of ChatGPT does not revoke an API key.

- Change a potentially exposed password. If you sign in with an OpenAI password and it may have been exposed, reused, or shared, replace it with a unique one. If you use Google or Microsoft to sign in, secure the corresponding provider account by changing that provider’s password; an OpenAI password reset does not reset a federated credential. OpenAI’s guidance for unrecognized activity on an account covers these sign-in cases.
- End your OpenAI sessions. In ChatGPT, open Settings > Security (or Security and login), go to Active sessions, choose Log out of all sessions, and confirm. The current session ends too, so be ready to sign in again. OpenAI says other ChatGPT sessions may take up to 30 minutes to log out; do not assume the change propagates instantly. See Managing active sessions in ChatGPT.
- Revoke any API key that may have been exposed. Delete the affected key, then inspect API usage for activity you do not recognize. A password change or ChatGPT logout is not a substitute for deleting an API key. If the key was exposed, retain relevant usage details before contacting support. OpenAI warns that exposed keys can be used for unauthorized API activity and charges.
- Review security history and preserve evidence. Record suspicious event types and times, device information, location, and any unexpected API usage. Save details that you did not perform or authorize. OpenAI cautions that device and location information can be approximate or unavailable, so treat it as a clue rather than conclusive proof.
- Report the activity to OpenAI. Open a new chat through a Help Center page and provide the relevant details. For suspected fraud, OpenAI also offers an unauthorized-activity report; choose the option for unauthorized activity involving your account.
What the Active sessions page can—and cannot—show
The Active sessions page is useful for ending and reviewing visible first-party OpenAI sessions, but it is not a complete inventory of every place your account may be in use.

- It excludes third-party app sessions, connected apps, Sign in with ChatGPT sessions used only for third-party services, and Codex CLI sessions.
- A single browser entry can represent sessions across multiple first-party OpenAI products.
- The feature is unavailable for accounts linked to organizational SSO, including SAML or OIDC. If you cannot find it on an organization-managed account, contact your administrator and OpenAI Support rather than assuming you missed a control.
- Even after you choose to log out all sessions, OpenAI says other ChatGPT sessions may take up to 30 minutes to be logged out.
These limitations are described in OpenAI’s active-session guidance. Report suspicious activity even if the page shows no unfamiliar entry.

- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Secure API access separately
API keys are independent credentials. If you suspect one was copied, shared, or exposed, delete it rather than relying on a ChatGPT password reset or session logout. Review API usage for unfamiliar activity and preserve relevant details for your support report.
For future use, create separate keys for distinct projects, teams, products, or features so one exposure does not require replacing a single shared credential everywhere. Keep keys out of source code; OpenAI recommends using environment variables or GitHub secrets. OpenAI says it disables a key when it detects that key on the public internet or leaked inside an app-store app, but that does not mean every exposed key will be detected. Suspected exposure still calls for immediate deletion and a usage review. See Keeping your OpenAI account secure.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
After containment, turn on MFA
Once you have dealt with potentially active access, enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) in your account’s security settings. MFA adds another sign-in step, but it does not remove sessions that are already logged in. OpenAI states: “Enabling MFA does not cancel existing logins.” That is why session logout belongs before MFA in an incident response.

OpenAI documents authenticator apps, push notifications, text message or WhatsApp codes, and passkeys as possible methods. Which options appear can depend on your device, country, account tier, and how the account was created. Consider how you will sign in across devices and recover access if your primary device is lost; availability and recovery options vary. See Managing multi-factor authentication (MFA).

Optional stronger protection for eligible consumer accounts
Eligible consumer ChatGPT accounts can consider Advanced Account Security. It requires passkeys or security keys, disables password sign-in and email/SMS sign-in codes, disables email account recovery, enables email login notifications, and shortens active-session duration. It is not available to ChatGPT Enterprise users, enterprise-managed accounts, or accounts associated with an enterprise-managed domain. Details and current eligibility are in OpenAI’s Advanced Account Security guidance.
This protection changes recovery as well as sign-in. Save the recovery keys and set up at least two secure sign-in methods, including one that works across devices, before relying on it. Disabling email recovery means losing your configured methods can make account recovery harder.

A FIDO-compatible hardware security key is one optional way to harden sign-in for accounts and devices that support it. Check connector compatibility and the methods available in your OpenAI account before buying or enrolling one. A security key does not terminate an existing compromised session, revoke an API key, or replace reporting suspicious activity.
