On most Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets, open Settings > Software update > Download and install, then follow the prompts if an update is offered. The menu label and update availability vary by model, carrier, software version, and market, so a manual check does not guarantee that a new patch is ready.
Check for an update in Settings
- Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network. Some carriers require Wi-Fi to check for or install updates.
- Open Settings and tap Software update. If that option is not present, look for System updates; wording and screens vary by device and software version.
- Tap Download and install, Check for updates, Check for system updates, or the check option shown on your device. Some models display an additional confirmation.
- If an update is offered, download it and follow the on-screen instructions. The device may restart, and some software versions require another check or step to complete the process. Keep the device connected to power or ensure it has sufficient charge while installing. Samsung’s Caribbean support guidance recommends at least 20% battery; that is regional advice, not a universal requirement.
Samsung notes that available screens and settings can vary by wireless provider, software version, and model. Samsung’s Galaxy update instructions describe the standard settings route and Smart Switch option.

Check the separate security-update menu, if your device has it
Some Galaxy devices provide a dedicated security update check at Settings > Security and privacy > Updates > Security update > Check for updates. This menu is not available on every model. If you cannot find it, use the Software update or System updates route instead. Samsung’s regional instructions show this separate path.

To see version information, open Settings > About phone or About tablet > Software information. For update history or release notes, check the Software update menu or your carrier’s support page; the exact information shown depends on the device and provider. Samsung’s update guide covers the software information screen, while its carrier guidance points users to provider-specific histories.

Install an update with Smart Switch on a computer
If an update is available through Samsung Smart Switch, you can install it from a Windows PC or Mac using a USB connection. This is an alternative to updating in Settings, not a guarantee that a newer release exists for the device.
- Install and open Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect the Galaxy device to the computer with a USB cable. Use the supplied cable where possible.
- Select Update if Smart Switch offers it, then follow the prompts.
- Keep the cable connected and do not use the device until the process finishes. The device will reboot.
If Smart Switch cannot connect, check that USB is set to file transfer, then try another USB port or cable. Restart or update the computer, or reinstall Smart Switch if needed. Samsung’s software update troubleshooting page describes these connection checks.

Why no update may appear
A message such as “Your software is up to date” means Samsung or the carrier is not offering an update to that device at the time of the check. It does not mean every Galaxy model has received the same patch or follows the same release calendar.

Availability depends on model, software version, provider, and region. Samsung and carriers may distribute a release in waves, so a newly announced update may not reach every eligible device at once.
- Check the exact model and carrier. Use the device’s software information and your carrier’s release history rather than comparing its patch date with another Galaxy model.
- Try Wi-Fi and check again later. Some carriers require Wi-Fi, and a staged rollout can take time to reach a device. Samsung says repeated checks may help while a release is rolling out.
- Do not infer support status from one empty check. Samsung’s security page lists selected supported devices and update schedules; that coverage can change as support periods end. Check the current list for your exact model at Samsung Mobile Security’s Security Updates page.
If downloading or installing fails
Download stops or storage is insufficient
Check available device storage. If Samsung displays an insufficient-storage message, free the space it identifies and retry. An interrupted download may be resumable from its notification.

The phone cannot install through Settings
Try Smart Switch on a computer if the on-device route continues to fail. Do not disconnect the USB cable during a computer update. If the device will not boot normally after a failed update, Samsung says service may be needed to reflash it.
Use reset or recovery options cautiously
A factory reset or emergency recovery can erase data. Back up important files before attempting either, and do not treat a reset as an early routine fix. Samsung’s failure troubleshooting guidance explains recovery options and their risks.

How often does Samsung release Galaxy security updates?
Samsung says it issues monthly, quarterly, and biannual firmware security updates for selected devices—not every Galaxy receives a monthly patch. On its current security scope page, Samsung states that, as of January 2024, it extended security-update support for Galaxy devices by up to seven years. “Up to” is not a promise that every model receives seven years of updates; device eligibility and delivery timing can vary by model, market, and network provider. The listed schedule and supported-device list can change, so consult Samsung’s current security update scope for your model.
