For trying new releases as they launch, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass is the stronger fit. For browsing a rotating console library, PlayStation Plus Extra offers hundreds of games, while Premium adds limited-time trials for selected titles. Neither service guarantees that a particular game you want is available: check the live catalog, your device and region, and the plan’s terms before subscribing.
Which subscription is better for trying new games?
Choose based on what “trying” means to you. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass include day-one games, making them the clearest starting points if you want access to eligible new releases at launch. PlayStation Plus Extra is aimed at exploring a large, changing PS4 and PS5 catalog. PlayStation Plus Premium is the PlayStation tier with selected game trials, alongside classics and cloud streaming.

These are different kinds of access, not interchangeable promises. A game included in a subscription is playable while it remains available and your membership is active; a trial gives only limited-time access to selected titles. Neither catalog should be treated as a guarantee that a particular upcoming game will be included.
What each subscription offers
| Plan | Best fit for trying games | Relevant benefits |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Plus Essential | Monthly games and online play | Monthly games and online multiplayer for games that require it; no Extra Game Catalog or Premium trials. [Sony plan details] |
| PlayStation Plus Extra | Browsing a rotating PlayStation catalog | Includes the Game Catalog, described by Sony as hundreds of games, with titles added regularly. Games can leave the catalog. [Sony plan details] |
| PlayStation Plus Premium | Trying selected PlayStation games through trials | Adds selected game trials, a Classics Catalog, and cloud streaming to Extra’s benefits. Trials are limited-time and are not available for every game. [Sony plan details] [Sony trial details] |
| Xbox Game Pass Essential | Accessing a basic rotating Xbox catalog | Xbox lists 50+ games and five monthly cloud hours; it does not include new releases on day one. [Xbox plan details] |
| Xbox Game Pass Premium | Using a larger Xbox catalog with some later Xbox-published releases | Xbox lists 200+ games and says select Xbox-published games arrive within one year of launch; it includes 10 monthly cloud hours. [Xbox plan details] |
| Xbox Game Pass Ultimate | Trying eligible day-one games across supported Xbox devices | Xbox lists 500+ games, day-one games, EA Play, and 15 monthly cloud hours. Day-one inclusion does not mean every new game is included. [Xbox plan details] |
| PC Game Pass | Trying eligible day-one games on PC | Xbox lists 300+ PC games, day-one games, and EA Play. Xbox says cloud gaming is not included with this plan. [Xbox plan details] |
Catalog counts and benefits above are the services’ own plan-page claims, not independent measures. Xbox says game titles, counts, features, and availability vary over time, by region, plan, and platform. Sony also notes that catalog games can have announced end dates. Check the title you want rather than choosing by catalog size alone.

Does Game Pass have new games on day one?
Xbox lists day-one games for Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Essential does not include new releases on day one. Premium includes select Xbox-published games within one year after launch, which is a different benefit from day-one access. Availability of any specific game still depends on its inclusion, your region, plan, and device. [Xbox plan details]
Ultimate is the relevant Xbox option if you want day-one access on supported Xbox devices; PC Game Pass is the corresponding starting point for PC. EA Play is included with both plans and offers trials of select new EA games, but that does not mean every Game Pass title has a trial. [Xbox plan details]

Does PlayStation Plus have game trials?
Yes. PlayStation Plus Premium includes limited-time trials for selected games. Premium is the tier to consider if you specifically want to sample a game through a trial rather than install and play a title from the broader catalog. Sony’s trial benefit applies only to select titles, so look up the game before upgrading. [Sony trial details]

Can you keep playing a game after it leaves a catalog?
Catalog access is temporary. Xbox says access ends when your subscription expires or a title leaves the service. Sony says some Game Catalog and Classics Catalog games have announced end dates; monthly games also require an active membership. If you are partway through a game, check its removal date and decide whether you can finish it in time. [Xbox plan details] [Sony plan details]

Is cloud streaming part of the decision?
On the Xbox US plan page, Essential, Premium, and Ultimate include five, 10, and 15 monthly cloud hours respectively. Xbox announced that these limits begin in November 2026. The same announcement says that, beginning then, players will be able to purchase cloud playtime and stream eligible games they own without a Game Pass subscription. Those are announced changes, not a statement about service behavior before their start date. [Xbox Wire announcement]

Sony lists a minimum internet speed of 5 Mbps and 15 Mbps for 1080p, and its US page excludes overseas territories. Check that the game, device, and location you intend to use are supported. How to choose before you subscribe
- Start with your hardware. Choose among plans that support the console or PC you actually use; cloud access is not available on every plan or in every region.
- List three to five games you genuinely want to try. Include new releases if day-one access matters, and distinguish games you want to sample briefly from those you intend to play through.
- Check each game’s live listing. Verify that it is currently included, which plan it requires, whether it is a catalog title or a limited trial, and whether it is leaving soon.
- Compare the total cost for the time you expect to play. Use the checkout price in your region, account for the membership duration, and factor in any cloud limits if streaming is central to your choice.
Changes that could affect the comparison
Sony says that from January 2026, PS4 games will be added to PlayStation Plus only intermittently. That may matter if your main reason for subscribing is to discover older PS4 releases; check the live catalog instead of assuming regular additions. [Sony plan details]
