How to Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Router Against Remote Attacks

Reduce exposure of your home router’s settings with practical steps for remote management, passwords, firmware, Wi-Fi encryption, guest access, and support status.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To reduce the risk of someone changing your router settings over the internet, turn off remote management unless you need it, replace default administrator credentials, and keep the router’s firmware current. Then secure Wi-Fi access with WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal, review convenience features, and check the firewall. Router interfaces and update policies differ, so use the instructions for your exact model or contact your internet service provider (ISP).

Update the router through its manufacturer or ISP

Start by checking the router manufacturer’s current software and update instructions. Firmware is the software that runs the router; installing supported updates helps keep it maintained. Do not install a firmware file intended for another model, or follow a generic menu path: the correct version and process depend on the device.

If your ISP supplied the router, ask whether it sends firmware updates automatically and whether you need to take any action. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends checking with the ISP about automatic updates for its equipment. See the FTC’s home Wi-Fi security guidance.

Disable remote management if you do not need it

In the router’s administration settings, look for “remote management” or a similar option and turn it off if you do not have a specific need to change router settings from outside your home network. The feature can allow router controls to be changed over the internet. Its availability and default behavior vary by model and setup, so do not assume your router exposes its management interface publicly—or that the setting is named the same way on every device.

  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

If you rely on remote administration, consult the manufacturer or ISP about how it works and what protections are available before changing the setting. The FTC recommends turning remote management off when it is not needed.

Change the administrator and Wi-Fi passwords

These credentials serve different purposes: the administrator password opens the router’s configuration settings, while the Wi-Fi password lets devices join the wireless network. Change any default administrator username and password, and choose a unique Wi-Fi password as well. Do not use your name, address, or router brand in either credential.

For model-specific steps, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. The FTC suggests searching for phrases such as “how to change [your router manufacturer] admin password” and “how to change [your router manufacturer] Wi-Fi network password.” If the instructions are unclear, contact the manufacturer or your ISP.

Use WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal encryption

In the wireless security settings, choose WPA3 Personal if your router offers it. If it does not, the FTC recommends WPA2 Personal. Avoid WPA and WEP, which are outdated. If the router offers only WPA or WEP, check whether a supported firmware update adds WPA2 or WPA3. If not, consider replacing the router.

Review WPS and UPnP before disabling them

The FTC recommends turning off Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), along with remote management. WPS offers a button-based way to join Wi-Fi without entering the network password; UPnP lets devices find one another. These features may support conveniences your household uses, so check for dependencies before disabling one. If you do not need it, turn it off in the router settings.

Set up a guest network and finish safely

If your router supports a guest network, give it a separate network name and password. This means fewer visitors need the primary Wi-Fi password; the FTC also notes that a guest device with malware is less likely to reach devices on the primary network.

When to replace the router

Replacement is worth considering if a supported update cannot make WPA2 or WPA3 available, or if the router no longer receives security support and cannot be maintained securely. The first threshold follows FTC consumer guidance; the broader principle of replacing devices that no longer receive security support is also reflected in CISA’s Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance, published June 4, 2025. The relevance of that guidance is general: it addresses internet-accessible organizational assets, not a household router replacement schedule.

Before buying, check the manufacturer’s current documentation for WPA3 support, the security-update policy and delivery method, and whether remote management can be disabled. Do not treat a Wi-Fi generation label alone as proof of better security or longer support. NISTIR 8425A, published September 10, 2024, sets cybersecurity requirements for consumer-grade router products; it is a product-oriented framework rather than a household setup manual. See NISTIR 8425A.
