Start by identifying the program and agency that should have paid you, then check its official status channel and follow that agency’s reporting steps. The agency—not a bank or a general government contact—is the authority on whether the payment was sent, whether it is due, and what claim or replacement process applies. The right next step depends on whether the payment is a direct deposit or check and whether it is Social Security, VA, SNAP, TANF, or another program.
First, identify the payment and its issuer
Check prior payment records, notices, and the benefit or tax account for the program name, expected date, amount, and paying agency. If you are unsure which agency authorized a federal payment, use USA.gov’s government checks and payments guide or call the Bureau of the Fiscal Service at 1-855-868-0151 for help identifying the agency.

For state or tribal benefits, start with the program that administers them: SNAP payment problems go to your state SNAP office, while TANF issues go to your state or tribal TANF office. Different programs use different offices and claim procedures; there is no single contact that handles every government payment.
Check the status through the official channel
Read any recent notice and check the program’s official account or payment-status channel, if one is available. Before calling or submitting a report, have the expected payment date and amount, relevant notices, and any confirmation or claim details at hand. Ask the issuer whether the payment was sent, what method was used, and what step it requires for your specific case.

Choose the next step by payment type and program
| Payment or problem | First contact | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic Social Security payment not posted | Your bank or financial institution first; then SSA if still missing | SSA says a deposit may be delayed in posting. If the payment remains missing, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or contact a local office. SSA will review the case and replace the payment if it is due. SSA’s missing-payment guidance gives the procedure. |
| VA benefit payment issue | Department of Veterans Affairs | Call 1-800-827-1000 (TTY 711) or contact a VA regional benefits office. USA.gov’s benefit-payment reporting guide lists the route. |
| SNAP payment issue | Your state SNAP office | Contact the office administering your state benefit; use the state-specific instructions for a missing or incorrect payment. |
| TANF payment issue | Your state or tribal TANF office | Contact the office administering your benefit and follow its case-specific reporting instructions. |
| Lost, missing, stolen, or expired federal check or direct deposit | The federal agency that issued the payment | Report the problem to the issuing agency and follow its claim or replacement instructions. If you do not know the issuer, call Fiscal Service at 1-855-868-0151 for help identifying it. USA.gov’s payment guide explains the route. |
If you expect a federal paper check
Most federal payments that were previously made by paper check began transitioning to electronic payment methods on September 30, 2025. If you still expect a paper federal benefit check, ask the paying agency which payment method applies to your case and whether an exception or enrollment process is available. MyMoney.gov describes direct deposit and the Direct Express card as electronic methods and directs recipients to the agency responsible for the benefit: Federal payment transition information.
Protect your information while reporting the issue
Use contact details from the agency’s official website, a notice you already trust, or another independently verified source. MyMoney.gov advises verifying an agency request through a website or phone number already known to be genuine. Do not rely on an unexpected call, email, or text to supply a link or phone number before sharing sensitive information.

Why there is no universal wait time
Federal, state, tribal, tax, and benefit programs do not share one published resolution timeline in the guidance cited here. Timing depends on the issuer’s process and the circumstances of the case. Ask the responsible program for a case-specific status and estimate rather than assuming that every delayed or missing payment follows the same schedule.
