Protecting a connected home starts with the router, not with an individual light bulb or camera. Use a current router with WPA3 Personal (or WPA2 Personal), replace every default credential, apply updates promptly, isolate smart devices from personal computers, and remove services and devices you do not need.
These five controls reduce the ways an attacker can enter your network, take over an account, exploit an unpatched device, or move from one compromised device to another.

1. Secure the router before changing individual devices
The router is the control point through which most home IoT traffic passes. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) calls it “the key to privacy in the Internet-of-Things (IoT) world,” while the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) describes a home wireless router as the primary entrance cybercriminals use to reach connected devices. A weak router configuration can undermine otherwise strong camera, speaker, or thermostat settings.

Change the router’s default identities and passwords
- Open the router’s administration page or mobile app. The exact address and menu names vary by manufacturer.
- Replace the default administrator username if the router permits it.
- Set a long, unique administrator password that is not used for Wi-Fi, email, or any other account.
- Change the Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and Wi-Fi password. Do not include your street address, surname, or router model in the SSID.
- Save the changes and reconnect your devices using the new Wi-Fi credentials.
Changing only the Wi-Fi password is incomplete: anyone who obtains the administrator login may still alter DNS settings, create accounts, open ports, or disable protections.

Choose current wireless encryption
Select WPA3 Personal when every important client supports it. WPA3 is the newest and strongest option identified in FTC Wi-Fi guidance. WPA2 Personal remains an accepted choice when WPA3 compatibility is unavailable. Do not select WPA or WEP; the FTC classifies those older protocols as outdated and not secure. If a mixed WPA2/WPA3 mode is the only way to connect an older device, use it temporarily and plan to replace the incompatible device.
Patch and tighten router services
Install router firmware updates as soon as they are offered. Enable the router firewall. Turn off remote administration, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) unless you have a specific, understood need for each feature. Remote administration exposes the management interface beyond your home; WPS can weaken enrollment security; and UPnP can allow devices to request automatic port openings. After making changes, log out of the administration interface rather than leaving an active session open.
2. Replace default device credentials and add multi-factor authentication
Every connected product can have its own local login, cloud account, or both. Default usernames and passwords are widely documented and are routinely tried by automated attackers. A camera with a changed Wi-Fi password is still vulnerable if its administrator account retains the factory password.

Work through every device category
Check cameras, voice speakers, televisions, thermostats, locks, appliances, hubs, printers, and any bridge that connects a non-Wi-Fi device to the network. For each product:
- Change the default username and password where the interface allows it.
- Create a password that is unique to that device or service; never recycle a password from another account.
- Remove old user accounts and revoke access for people who no longer need control.
- Review the companion mobile app and cloud dashboard for linked accounts, active sessions, and third-party integrations.
A password manager can generate and store unique credentials so that changing one device does not force you to remember a dozen new passwords. Keep recovery email addresses and phone numbers for cloud accounts current, because an attacker who controls account recovery can bypass a strong device password.

Turn on two-factor authentication
Enable two-factor authentication (2FA), also called multi-factor authentication (MFA), for the device account and its cloud service whenever offered. CISA’s home checklist calls this “Double your login protection.” An authenticator-app code or hardware security key is preferable when the service supports it; text-message codes are still better than a password alone. MFA limits damage when a password is exposed elsewhere, but it does not replace changing a factory credential or updating the device itself.
3. Keep firmware, apps, and operating systems current
Updates frequently contain patches for vulnerabilities that are already known to attackers. FTC guidance covers software updates for IoT products, routers, mobile apps, operating systems, and security software, not just the firmware inside the physical device.
Enable automatic updates where practical
Look for an “Automatic update,” “Auto-update,” or “Install updates automatically” setting in the device app, router interface, and phone operating system. Leave it enabled when the vendor provides a reliable update channel. Keep the companion app current; an old app may fail to enforce newer security settings even when the hardware is patched.
Know how each product receives firmware
Manufacturers deliver updates differently. Some install them over the internet, some require approval in a mobile app, and others require downloading a file and uploading it through a local administration page. Read the product’s support instructions and check the firmware version after installation. A device that has been offline for months may need several updates before it reaches the current release.
Schedule manual checks for products that do not support automatic updates. Include the router, cameras, hubs, televisions, and network-connected appliances in the same household maintenance list. If a vendor has stopped providing security updates, disconnect the product from the internet, place it on a restricted IoT network, or replace it; leaving an unsupported device on the primary network creates an avoidable weakness.

4. Separate smart-home traffic from people and work
Network segmentation limits what a compromised device can reach. A visitor’s infected laptop or a vulnerable camera should not have a direct path to your work computer, personal files, or password manager.
Use the guest network for visitors
Create a guest Wi-Fi network with a separate name and password. The FTC notes that a separate guest login means fewer people receive the primary Wi-Fi password and helps prevent malware on a guest device from reaching devices on the main network. Give visitors the guest password rather than your primary credentials, and change it if it has been shared widely.
Create a dedicated IoT network when the router supports it
Many current routers offer an IoT SSID, while advanced systems can create a separate virtual LAN (VLAN). Put cameras, plugs, bulbs, speakers, appliances, and hubs on that network. Keep computers, phones used for banking, network storage, and work equipment on the primary network. Check whether your router allows the primary network to control IoT devices without allowing IoT devices to initiate connections back to the primary network; some smart-home ecosystems need carefully chosen exceptions for discovery or local control.
Apply least-privilege traffic rules
NIST’s Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD) work demonstrates a policy approach in which an IoT device is allowed to send and receive only the traffic required for its function. A camera might need its vendor’s update and notification servers, but it does not need to scan every computer in the house. If your router or firewall supports device-level rules, block unnecessary inbound connections and restrict outbound destinations. Segmentation is not a substitute for patches and unique passwords, but it limits lateral movement after a compromise.
5. Reduce exposure and use the protections already built in
Security improves when there are fewer devices, accounts, services, and open paths to manage.

Inventory what is connected
Open the router’s client or device list and record each connected product, its owner, and its purpose. Give devices recognizable names instead of leaving a list of anonymous hardware addresses. Investigate unknown entries, especially devices that appear after you change the Wi-Fi password. Keep the inventory with purchase dates and support information so you can identify products that are nearing the end of their update lifecycle.
Remove devices and accounts you no longer use
Factory-reset and disconnect abandoned cameras, hubs, speakers, and appliances. Delete their cloud accounts or remove them from the household account where the vendor provides that option. A device that is powered off but still linked to a cloud account can retain tokens or remote-control permissions.
Disable unnecessary remote access
Turn off internet access, remote viewing, remote administration, or vendor integrations that you do not use. Avoid forwarding router ports to cameras or other devices unless you have a specific requirement and understand the ongoing maintenance. Prefer a vendor’s secured access method with MFA over exposing a local administration page directly to the internet.
Enable local security features
Use encryption, a passcode lockout, screen or control-panel locks, and automatic logout options when a device supplies them. Set a lock code on voice assistants or displays that can unlock doors, make purchases, or reveal private information. Review which mobile apps can control each device and remove permissions that are no longer necessary.
What to compare when replacing an inadequate router
If your current router lacks WPA2/WPA3, current firmware, guest networking, or basic firewall controls, replacement may be more effective than trying to compensate with individual device settings. Compare these capabilities before buying:

Do not judge a router only by wireless speed or coverage. A model that receives security updates, exposes useful segmentation controls, and makes connected devices easy to audit can provide more practical protection than a faster model with a neglected administration interface.
A maintenance routine that keeps the five controls working
- When installing a product: place it on the IoT network, change its credentials before normal use, enable MFA, and install available updates.
- Monthly: review the router’s client list, remove unknown or retired devices, and check for router and IoT firmware updates.
- After a security alert: update the affected product, change its password and cloud-session credentials, inspect remote-access settings, and review other devices on the same network.
- When a device is sold or discarded: revoke cloud access, remove it from household apps, and perform the manufacturer’s factory reset procedure.
Common problems and practical fixes
An older device will not join WPA3
Confirm whether the router offers a WPA2/WPA3 transition mode or a separate WPA2 network. Put only the incompatible device on that network and replace it when the manufacturer no longer provides security updates. Do not downgrade the entire home network to WPA or WEP.
A smart device disappears after network separation
Some products require local discovery protocols or a control app on the same network. Check the router’s setting for allowing primary-network access to the IoT SSID, then permit only the required traffic. If the product still cannot operate, keep it isolated and use the vendor’s secured cloud control rather than merging every device onto the primary network.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A firmware update fails
Keep the device powered, verify that it has a stable connection, and follow the vendor’s recovery instructions. Do not interrupt a router update. If the product no longer receives updates or repeatedly fails to install them, treat it as unsupported: restrict its network access or replace it.
You find an unknown client in the router list
Change the Wi-Fi password, reconnect only known devices, and inspect the list again. Check guest and IoT networks separately, because an unfamiliar entry may be a forgotten appliance or a visitor’s device. If the entry returns, update the router, disable WPS, review remote administration, and investigate the device before restoring normal access.
