Secure each decoration using its manufacturer’s instructions and designated tie-down points, then check the setup as weather and visitor traffic change. For theft deterrence, bring valuable or easy-to-carry items indoors when they are not on display; a compatible lock and ground anchor can make casual removal harder, but neither wind damage nor theft can be ruled out.
Secure decorations against wind
There is no single stake, rope, or anchoring method that is safe for every lawn decoration. A small yard prop, a tall freestanding figure, and an inflatable can have different attachment points and wind limits. Start with the instructions for the exact item.

Set up the anchor points the decoration is designed to use
- Read the product instructions. Use the supplied or manufacturer-approved hardware and every tie-down point the instructions specify. Do not attach a rope or cable to a part that is not designed to take the load.
- Choose an anchor compatible with the item and ground. The instructions should guide the hardware and installation. Soil, paving, and the decoration’s shape affect what can be secured; a stake suitable for one setup may not suit another.
- Keep lines clear of paths. Place stakes, cords, and guy lines where visitors will not walk over them. Check the whole display after dark, when lines and low anchors may be harder to see.
- Inspect the setup as conditions change. Check for loosened anchors, damaged ropes, shifting props, or new obstructions after weather changes. Take the decoration down or move it indoors if it cannot be secured as instructed or conditions exceed its maker’s stated limits.
The UK Health and Safety Executive’s advice for outdoor play inflatables says to use all anchor points, consult the manual, inspect ropes, and avoid improvised tow ropes such as bungee cords. Its specified stake dimensions and wind limit apply to the play equipment covered by that guidance, not to household Halloween decorations generally. Make theft less convenient
For a valuable decoration that must stay outside, a ground or earth anchor can help secure it to the ground. A weather-suitable cable or chain and padlock may deter casual removal if the decoration has a suitable attachment point and the lock can connect to a secure fixture. Warwickshire Police recommends ground anchors or fixing down garden ornaments and furniture; this is general garden-security advice, not a tested guarantee for Halloween props. The simplest option for seasonal items that are valuable, portable, or left out overnight is to bring them indoors or lock them away when they are not on display. If an item remains outside, make sure any security hardware does not interfere with its intended wind anchoring or create a trip hazard.
Make ownership easier to establish
Photograph valuable decorations and keep a record of distinctive features or identifying marks. Property marking and records can help identify recovered property and support proof of ownership; they do not prevent a theft. Police.uk advice on marking property

Protect visitors and electrical connections
Anchors and power cords can create hazards even when a decoration is stable. Keep decorations, cords, and guy lines clear of entrances, exits, and emergency routes. Check their placement after dark, and arrange the display so visitors are not likely to trip over lines or stakes. The Texas Department of Insurance’s Halloween safety guidance advises keeping decorations out of doors and emergency paths.

If a powered decoration needs an extension cord, use an outdoor-rated, undamaged cord and follow the decoration’s instructions and local electrical rules. The Texas Department of Insurance says cords for yard inflatables and lighting should be rated for outdoor use by a nationally recognized testing laboratory. The National Fire Protection Association advises using GFCI protection for electrically powered outdoor decorations and equipment, and testing the GFCI before use. Choose hardware by fit, not by a universal specification
Before buying an anchor or lock, check the decoration’s tie-down design and instructions, the surface or soil where it will be installed, and whether the setup can stay clear of visitor routes. Consider weather resistance and how easily the hardware can be removed and stored. An anchor’s job is to secure an item against movement; a lock’s job is to make removal less convenient. One should not be assumed to perform the other’s job.
No decoration-specific theft rate, wind-failure rate, or comparative anchor test is established by the cited guidance. Product performance depends on the particular decoration, hardware, installation, and conditions, so follow the maker’s stated use and load instructions rather than relying on a generic stake size or wind figure.
