That setting controls how your presence is displayed; a separate privacy setting controls who can see your online status and what you’re playing. Neither setting guarantees total invisibility.
Change your online status
The status menu is available on PS5, PS4, and the PlayStation App. Sony says Online is the default while you’re signed in unless you change it. Its official status guide describes Busy as useful when you want to focus on a game or step away, and Appear Offline as a way to avoid appearing online to friends or other players.

On PS5
- From the home screen, select your profile, then select Online Status.
- Choose the availability state you want. You can also open the Control Center and select your profile, then Online Status.
- At the user-selection screen, Sony also documents changing status with the Options button.
On PS4
- From the home screen, open Profile > Set Online Status.
- Alternatively, press the PS button to open the Quick Menu and choose Online Status.
- Choose Online or Appear Offline. Sony says Busy cannot be selected on PS4.
In the PlayStation App
- On the play screen, tap Profile.
- Select Online Status and choose the state you want.
Sony says a status change on a PS5 or PS4 applies across the covered consoles and is retained the next time you log in. Its guide also notes that changing status on one PS5, or between a PS5 and PS4, changes it on those devices.

Availability and privacy are separate controls. Appear Offline changes the status shown to other people; the account privacy setting determines who can see online status and current gameplay. Sony says account privacy settings apply across devices. See its privacy settings guide for the platform-specific options.

- PS5: Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy > View and Customise Your Privacy Settings. Review the activity controls, including Who can see your online status and what you’re currently playing.
- PS4: Open Settings > Account Management > Privacy Settings and select the relevant feature.
- Web: Open Account Management, go to Privacy settings, and edit the feature.
If you want to limit the audience for your status or current game, adjust the privacy control as well as your availability state. One does not replace the other.
What Appear Offline does—and does not—hide
Appear Offline reduces visible presence, but it is not a promise that nobody can tell you are playing. Sony’s status guide says other players might see you as online within a game. Signing in on PS3, PS Vita, or PlayStation TV also results in appearing online. Players can still send voice-chat and online-game invitations while your status is Busy or Appear Offline.

Hiding a game is different from appearing offline
Hiding a game changes the visibility of activity associated with that title; it is not the same as changing your online status. The behavior also differs between PS5 and PS4, as described in Sony’s guide to hiding games.

- PS4: Hiding a game removes information from activities, your profile, or your trophy list, but other PS4 players can still see the game under Now Playing. Sony’s suggested way to prevent that display is Profile > Set Online Status > Appear Offline.
Child account privacy is managed separately
A family manager, parent, or guardian may manage a child’s privacy settings and choose which controls the child can change. Those adults may also see the child’s activity through the PlayStation Family app. Sony explains these account roles in its account and family guidance.
